That doesn't entirely explain why he'd be willing to join the Crows again by betraying you if you're a jerk to him or don't impress him at all, unless it's the death wish rearing it's head again.

Zevran is okay on a friendly don't-let-him-near-any-cutlery kind of way, I guess, but I don't really like the romance with him. He's a sexual opportunist, complete bragger (seriously, will you shut up about your past exploits while I try to get affectionate with you) and there's this unnerving feeling that he's just trying to find an angle to assassinate you later.
Also, he only comes in 'hardened'.
Take it as you like it.
(Oh gods, even that sounded filthy)
You guys are such kidders!
Oh, wait... you were being serious? How awkward for you...

He can be softened though. Which is interesting compared to the other companions.
After having him tell me about his past - his lover and why he wanted the mission of assassinating the Grey Wardens so badly, I'm never killing him again. For me he might actually be the most interesting character in the game. Too bad he doesn't start with lockpicking though.

I like Zev. He reminds me of Jack Harkness from Doctor Who. No, not just because he'll have sex with anyone that breathes; his irreverent adventuruous and fun attitude is similar too.
Ah, he made me think of Jack too (love Dr Who and Torchwood).
When I'll play with a Dalish elven girl, I plan to romance him...

Of course, my character appriciates practicality. Carrying an Antivan Crow who knows the other Crows and knows their ways is smart as it's safe to assume the crows will try again. Certainly better then killing him, and thus losing a source of information. It would be wise to get HIM to like my character ( wether or not my character likes him could be an entirely moot point if I wished ) so that he would indeed keep me informed about the ways of the Crows and such ( the fact he really doesn't do much beyond teaching you to be an assassin is irrelevant as my character does not know this ). He COULD still turn on me of course, hell I wouldn't have been surprised if he did it after giving his earring and such. It still wouldn't make me dislike the character, on the contrary I would have been throughly impressed.
Though I admit I am not impressed with his combat abilities ( before you get to level him up yourself and of course it depends on if you know how to play a rogue ) xD nor with the fact that despite what he says, he doesn't know anything about picking locks ( but I view this as an amusing detail and rather a purpouseful lie from the character, then a flaw ). I just wish he didn't offer to pick the locks my own character fails at ( "SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY I know moreaboutlocksthenyou you cocky son of a...." ).
But, Zevran is quite the character and I can understand not everyone likes him. But don't judge him for betraying you if you don't like him at all

Hmmm...I've never gotten beyond just his friendly discussions of his past, even after he sided with me against the crows. Do you have to be in a romance or max out his apporval to get this discussion?
Aside from the friendliness during that encounter, in fact, he stopped talking to her altogether, even though she let him down early and easy and focused on just being friends. I'm trying another that is romancing him, but I was wondering if my friendly Warden will get this story or if I have to wait for the romance Warden.

Zev is funny, relaxed, great fighter (if you know how to play rogue). Of all the companions, I found him to be the most agreeable. He doesn't pick fights with others, except for the group prank on Morrigan..
My only real problem with Zevran is that he *doesn't start out with lockpicking* - despite that being one of the things he claims to be skilled at - which is really, really annoying. I wish the game had just let us spec all NPCs from the ground up when we received them, regardless of level.
It is banter... I had Alistair and Morrigan with Zev accompanying the PC. After the 3rd conversation, the Zev makes a comment to Alistair. Just zone in and out near a 'banter point' until the banter happens.

In my current playthrough I unlocked the conversation immediately after his Approval was at "Interested". At that time you should ask him about his adventures. If you continue asking, he will tell you about a third encounter, but changes his mind. Later (you might have to heighten his approval for this) he will tell you his special story if you ask again.

Leliana: "The stars are out tonight."
PC: "So? Go help Alistair make supper."
Leliana: "m-m-make Supper?"
PC: "Yeah. He'll ruin it if you don't help him."
Leliana: "Umm OK whatever you say!"

Ditto for Zevran. I did not hide my disdain for his actions or his lifestyle, nor was I interested in a romance. So of course he betrayed me, so I gutted him with Topsider's Honor, and decapitated him with Starfang.
gotta love it.
