ok, im going to be fighting the thresher maw on insanity soon and when i fought it on hardcore i barely beat it before time ran out. what heavy weapon works best again it, who is the other person i should take with me, and could you offer a stratagy?
Im playing as an infiltrator, my skills are tungsten ammo, assassin, heavy incinerate, assassin cloak, and heavy disruptor ammo.
on hardcore i used the collecter laser and hid on the ramps as i fired so i could hit it but it couldn't hit me.

heres a tip:
in front of the switch to activate the rounds (forgot its name)
there is a pile of rubble, and at some angles the threshers maw's acid will hit it.
so stay in the middle and tell ur teamates to stay away from you.
( i did this on insanity with an infiltrator, just use incinerate and unload your sniper)

use the cain. then wait for it to spit acid, note its path then side step and fire, it will go down eventually.

It seems like your skills are already well suited to killing the thresher maw. Lots of armor breaking stuff. I think that you should trade out the collector beam for either the rocket launcher or the Cain, though.Reason being the beam is really crappy on armor. Not so noticeable on easier difficulties but since your on insane, the beam really does suck on armor.
For the person to take with you, I would say Garrus with squad armor piercing rounds. Give him a sniper rifle so max his dps. Also, during battles I noticed that your squadmates will sometimes "forget" to attack, so everyone once in awhile, remind them to attack the thresher maw.
Really, if you can get the Cain off then you should be fine.

I've beaten the Thresher Maw as an Engineer on Insanity difficulty with about 2 minutes to spare. What I did was I used a weapon that shoots fast and spammed Incinerate whenever it was up. Alternatively, you could try using a weapon that hits hard but still produces adequate DPS. Also, dodge the acid spit by hiding behind one of the pillars-- that stuff hurts!
As with Heavy Weapons ... I didn't use any ... actually, I take that back. I used that vacuum gun thing, but it wasn't very effective. If anything, you could try a weapon that works well against Armor.
Have Fun!

All I did was keep close to those heavy pillers for cover, didn't use the cover system, just poked out abit so I can keep firing at it and not worry about being hit with the acid. It mostly focused fire on me and not my squad, so I was the bait while they did the majority of the damage. The incinerate is good againts armor, so just use it as much as possible. and whever it moves, move to the other side. Pretty simple. I killed it before time ran out like 4 seconds before hand, was quite funny. I brought that mini nuke weapon... to only see it fired air being a 20 heavy weapon rounds away from being able to use it. Anyways, best of luck man. I'm sure you'll get it. You'll do alot of damage with a heavy incinerate, also, just unload with your sniper for extra damage. You'll get it for sure. =)

This. Although I have just completed my first play through (clocking in at around 124 hours with every single surveyable planet mined to exhaustion, all 11 party members' quests done and all side-quests completed as well, to the best of my knowledge) and have not yet played it on insanity level (that's next!), the M92-Cain is *the* powerhouse "badboy" weapon in "ME2". On normal difficulty it will kill the Thresher Maw at full health with one shot. Just remember to time the power build up and the following discharge with the appearance of your target. Happy hunting!
P.S. The M92-Cain will only fire if you have at least 100% energy stored in it. At 200% you gain an extra shot though to reach that percentage level you will have to wear armor pieces that boost ammo storage.

Just hold the button till it fires.. and you need 100% at least for one shot.

Grenade Launcher it.
If you have enough ammo for the Cain, I suppose one shot does like 1/4 or so (seemed like less actually) of its HP on Insanity, which can give you a good head start. The best tactic is to wait for it to go down, then watch the trail of flying debris as it tunnels to figure out where it is going to pop up.
Start charging when you know where it is about to pop up.
Grenade launcher is still better though. But I beat it as a soldier using the Vindicator to be honest. Used up all my Mantis shots first and unloaded the Carnifex too, Vindicator finished it.

when all else fails, you can glitch through the gate by rubbing your body into the left side of it

Well at least Thresher Maws only have Armor bars even on Insanity. Sniper Rifles are real great on armor. Use up all your heavy weapon, then use up all your sniper ammo, then pick up more. Shoot it in the face, right where the tentacle tongue goes into the mouth.

thats an interesting glitch, but i would only be interested if it froze the time.
the tongue? eyes are normally the kill spot o.0

Not the tongue, but the top of the tongue. The face basically. Don't aim for the beady eyeballs, they are too far to the side of the head. Just pop it in the middle of its face.

I brought Grunt and Mordin along (neither are loyal, obviously Grunt isn't since this is his loyalty mission). Basically I just changed all weapons to incendiary ammo and just SMG'd the bastard non-stop, ducking behind pillars, etc (I tried this because using up all of the collector's heavy weapon only brought down the f**ker to 50% armor). Amazingly not even running out of bullets for the SMG I had about 20 seconds to spare before the f**ker finally went down. Yeah!

Facing away from the keystone, there are heavy pillars you can use for permanent cover. The one in the top right corner also has respawning ammo. With just the heavy pistol and a teammate with incendiary blast/warp/reave - it's not difficult to finish the thresher maw with two minutes to spare even on insanity. I don't even bother using heavy weapons for the fight.

Ah, yes - the 'heavy pillars'. The moment I cottoned on to those, the Thresher Maw fight was forever after entirely risk free. The good thing in particular about the heavy pillars is that the Thresher Maw tends to stay close to whichever one you are using for cover, so you never need to leave the pillar of your choice.

Know it's probably a dead thread, but a maxed out Predator Heavy Pistol, with Garrus and Grunt, and the aforementioned Squad Incendiary ammo. Switching between that and my Geth Pulse Rifle, I used this mission as a resupply for Heavy Weapon Ammo. Never even used the Cain!
