I've done this quest both ways, Connor died or Isolde..

I would like to do it without killing either.  I've done the, where you get Wynne, but I don't know how to use them for this quest so I won't have to kill either.

I've talked in camp, went back to the tower, went to the towns Chantries, I can't figure it out.  How do I get their help.

Save the mages. Go to the Tower and speak to Irving. Select approprate option. Probably also need to discuss other options when considering what to do to bring up the "Go to tower" otpion.

Warning: Spoiler below

Ask Alaster or Wynne for their opinion, in the room at the same time you are discussing how to rescue Conner. One of them or both, will suggest mages and lyrium.
You can also press the blood mage and he will admit that it can be done with extra mages and lyrium. Once they suggest it, you can go to the tower and ask Irving for help. He will be glad to do it.
Note: Morrigan going in the fade will kick butt.
The blood mage will want to make a deal with the demon, which can be amusing, or you can choose to kick butt instead.
Wynne, ok but weak against this demon.

And, as pointed out in earlier posts, you have to of saved the mages in the tower first. That way they can help.

Where is Irving...there's three people in the entrance including Templar Gregoire..Quartermaster and a Templar....and some kids and 3 folks down the hall...Cullen in upstairs....

I'm not sure what you mean save verses purge. I did the quest with Wynne and I think I sided with the Mages whenever I could....

I ask Gregorie what will the Circle do now without Mages and he tells me they will send for some Enchanters and it will rebuild...or something like that...

Weird- I guess Irving might have died in the final fight. Make sure to use the Litany of Andralla (sp?) in the fight with Uldred to keep him from controlling and killing the captive mages. Irving is the guy with the raspy voice and the big grey beard.

First you must spare Jowan's life as he knows the spell to save Connor without killing anyone. Second you need to have saved the mages in the tower beforehand.  Third, you need to find the obscure dialogue tree branch with Jowan, Isolde and Teagan that leads to the revelation that lots of lyrium from the mages is the solution. Then go to the tower and ask Erwin to help save a child. Then return to the castle and select a mage to go into the Fade. I usually go with my PC if (s)he is a mage or Wynne. However Morrigan is also a suitable candidate.

As I said, there is no Erwin in the Circle Tower, anywhere. When I first started this quest, Jowen did mention the lyrium. But, I didn't follow it..my bad...that's probably where part of the problem is..

But, there's still no Erwin..hmmmm thanks for tryin..I'll pay better attention when I play as a Mage..

I had a feeling there was a third option. In my first playthrough mummy dearest got killed. During the second playthrough I found out the option of getting help from the Circle but explored Redcliffe Castle a little too much and ran into Connor instead, and mummy dearest killed him. <_<

In the Tower final boss battle, some Circle mages (including Erwin) are grouped around the outer edge of the battle scene. You need to know where they are so you can keep an eye on them cos they get possessed. This is when you need to use the Litany spell to save them, in fact Erwin tells you when to use the spell during the fight, and you need to do this a couple of times, otherwise they die.

It is important to save at least Erwin cos he plays a role in some other later quests as well...

You HAVE to use the Litany I think. My first playthrough I didn't get the hang of using it in time to stop him (Wynne will give you a voice prompt and you will see light circles round one of the mages in the Harrowing Chamber). It stuns uldred and prevents him from turning them. You also have to choose NOT to purge them when you talk to Cullen I think. (I usually go with "I won't kill innocents" and "I will have to see for myself before i decide that": or something like that). If you successfully use the Litany at least once I think the game decides you tried to save them and Irving lives if you beat Uldred.

Once you prompt Jowan to tell you about options in Redcliffe, you and lead the convo around to discussing the mages in the tower and that 'they aren't far and owe you one'.

If you kill Conner (demon DESIRE) who possess him,you will miss out on some quests loaded with XP.

Additional info about Litany:

When you are about to leave from sloth demon's Fade trap, the guy you meet there (Niall) says he is too weak to escape and tells you to get Lithany from his body. Do as he says. You can drag it from inventory to any action bar, actually all your characters can have it on the bar (it's not "equipped").

During the fight with Uldred, "ripples" or circles will appear around a mage and Wynne will shout. Just use the Litany. It has shord cooldown btw.

Actually I think there are 6 ways to play this out.

1.  You kill connor outside the Fade
2.  You convince the Mother to Kill Conor
3.  Use Blood Magic to Save Connor
4.  Use Blood Magic, but make a Deal
5.  Use the Circle Tower to Save Connor
6.  Use the Circle Tower, but make a Deal

Side Effects:

- Depending if you convice the Mother it's for the Greater good, she'll either like you or not.  This may be effected by your decision with Jowan.  I know if you kill him, the Mother is happy.  If you don't she gets upset with you.

- Also if you let Jowan run free and convince him not to help in the fight, he doesn't come back and Blood Magic is not an option.

- I'm not totally sure, but can you scarifice anyone else in the Blood Magic ritual?  I thought you could.

I thought the only event you miss out on by killing the demon/kid in his room is a trip to the fade ...
Perhaps there might be more XP involved with the fade route, but nothing I read previously suggests more quests related to doing it this way.

In my only playthough I killed the kid, so please enlighten me ...

No matter what you do, always wait on making the decision and go upstairs to get the xp for killing all the undead.  Also you get the key to the armory and you can empty that out.  Just make sure you stop and turn around before you see Connor.

I don't knwo of any additional quests besides going into the Fade.  But still no matter what you kill the Demon or not.

Yep, I remember postponing the decision for as long as I could, went upstairs, cleared out the undead and got the armoury key. Then I advanced into the kid's room and a cut scene began ...

You can actually have a conversation with Connor, as long as you don't try and approach Eamon the desire demon will not attack you. Oh, needless to say, when talking to Connor don't pick options like 'You need to die' or some such.

Not so.  The Broken Circle quest is one of the 4 treaty quests you have to complete to finish the game.  You can do it anytime, even before Redcliffe.  However, in order to have the option to save Connor (and everyone else), you have to do the quest beforehand, whether you've done it before ever going to Redcliffe or you do it on the spot when you go to ask for the mages' help.  If you're willing to let either Connor or Isolde die, you can do it way after Redcliffe.

His name is Irving.

Have you done the "Broken Circle" quest? If you have, did you spare the mages? If you have not, you need to do that quest before you can talk to Irving, as he is "indisposed" until the quest is done.

At this point I don't know if I spared the Mages or not...If given the option, I would not have locked them up..Mages are my "thing"..I side with them in any game I play unless the story line won't let me........When I talk to Greagori and ask "what will the circle do now" he says they will send for some senior enchanters from two other towns, and rebuild....so, does that mean I sided with them or not??

I got and used the Amulet when Wynne told me to. Where, exactly, is Erwin supposed to be...

I was able to get in the room to the left of Connor, "upstairs", before I triggered him, trying to sneak around him to the room in back of him....

I played this all ways...killed Connor, didn't kill himi, used Morrigan, used Wynne, and so forth. But, without having followed the "mage/lyrium" line, given by Jowne there's no hope of the third option....Mommy, Daddy, and Connor live...darn....and with Erwin not showing up....We're screwed....

But, there's always....replay...thanks everyone....

Hey Bri193....I think you may have the answer...I did use the Amulet, but only once...It's entirely possible that I let him get killed....I didn't know....how could I....

Will definately keep this tip in mind if I replay...thanks..

Some posters have commented that you need to have Broken Circle done before the Redcliffe quest, but this is not so. If you haven't done the Mage Tower, just explore the other options with Jowan - the default line is for to one person to be sacrificed - and he'll comment on the need for lyrium and mages if no one is to be sacrificed. Choose to go for this option, and Teagan, Isolde and Connor will wait forever for you to finish the Mage Tower first.

In the Mage Tower, you'll need to side with the Mages and save Irving. It's possible to have an ending where Irving is dead but you sided with the Mages, but I don't know if you can get the Mages' help for the Circle then. Irving's always survived for me.

Once Irving is saved, just talk to him about the Redcliffe child - it appears upfront as an option, and they'll be off to Redcliffe. All that's left is to join them there.

Like I thought, I must have let him get killed..so there's no hope. My last save with Jowen is after the conversations, the one before that is 23 hrs of gameplay ago..so it's too late for the mage/lyrium dialogue..too bad there wasn't some story line about Erwin/Irving and him possibly being needed in the future...If I'd had a clue, I would've protected him.  Know better next time..

Thanks for the tips, they'll come in handy if I replay.

PS...Where is Erwin/Irving anyway..where would he show up if he had lived???  thanks
