A few quick questions regarding continuing on with my preferred Shepard.

1.  Is it possible to start a new game plus AND preserve that same Shepard post-endgame in his first playthrough? This would mean seamlessly loading/switching between my 1st playthrough post-endgame character/saves to dick around with my full squad or whatever, and yet progressing with that same character in his 2nd playthrough, (to reach level 30 and just generally relive the experience).

2. My character (like many here) is a ME1 import, and I was thrilled by the level continuity between the 2 games. If I were to begin a new game plus with my current character, would all my decisions for this this second run(who's dead/alive, romance etc) revert to the default/canon choices (the non-import decisions), or would my ME1 choices remain intact? I doubt Bioware would force me into any of these decisions, but I'd like to be certain moving forward. (I mention this because I've heard that your paragon/renegade points reset, and seeing how you received some as an import bonus based on ME1 gameplay, suspicions have been raised).

(Minor, vague spoilers(?))
3. Finally, what exactly is retained from one's first playthrough in the subsequent run (items, skills, bonuses etc)? I'm mainly concerned with the extra weapon training you get at a certain point in the main plot. Does it carry over so I may pick up another weapon at said plot point?  I'm an infiltrator and picked up the A.R. training; I don't regret it, but damn does that Widow anti-matter rifle look appealing.  From what I've heard it's got a much more satisfying "one shot one kill” feel than the semi-automatic Viper.

I hope my questions are cogent and coherent.

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, I believe each game you play creates a new directory. Even so, make sure you create one unique save (not quicksave or autosave) for the character you want and keep that. Any save made after the ending of the game is marked as complete.

2. Your decisions start over on that particular character, yes. The Paragon/Ren points do reset, which is weird.

3. You keep all your items and levels. Honestly, most of the bonus are incentives to replay a NEW character. There seems to be little reason to play the same character over unless you were unhappy with some of the choices he/she made.

1. Yes. I've done this & works fine.
2. Don't know. I haven't tried that myself yet.
3. Level, skills, armor, items (after Freedom's Progress mission). The rest (Paragon/Renegade, research) start over.
You do receive 200000 credits, 50000 resources (per resource) however so this helps tremendously in getting started quickly.

1. Yes it is possible. If you continue you can save your game. In the "Import ME2 character" only saves made AFTER Collector Base will be visible for import.

2. The choices of ME1 are locked to your save. THey will not rever back to Bioware defaults.

3. You get 200k credits, 50k of each mineral, all weapons (after Freedom's Progress), all armor pieces. You can also pick bonus ability based on squad loyalty. This stacks with ME1 bonuses - beat ME2, import your ME1 character again, and if you were lvl60 you start with 350k credits.

Spent the last 2 hours searching for these questions.

So would it be wise to create a save file before doing a new game plus, this way I have my game for ME3. Also, when you do a new game plus can you change your class, I think you couldn't in ME1... thanks guys.

People say that you get a 'bonus skill' on the additional playthrough, does this simply mean that you retain your advanced training ( or that you can choose one based on the ones you unlocked ) or does it mean you get to pick one to keep in addition to the advanced training you can normally choose later on.

As in: can I choose warp ammo from the start, then later on choose geth shielding as advanced training and have both, or do you just get one in advance?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing as dchalf10.

Also, just to be clear, I do retain my extra weapon training (I get that you keep your items and skill levels, but this isn't a skill per se). E.g. My infiltrator will be able to use his aquired assault rifles immediately after freedom's progress in his 2nd playthrough, and may pick up the widow or revenant lmg once he reaches a certain point in the story.

I think some of those weapons might be class restricted. I'm 99% sure that the Revenant is soldier only, at any rate.

Nevermind, it appears the weapon training does carry over, however the new weapon selection scene isn't triggered again on a second playthrough, making it impossible to obtain all the various weapons.

A shame, really.

I've imported a ME1 Level 60 character and reached level 30 in my first ME2 playthrough. So is there any good reason to play the game with the same character again? Do you think you get more experience, money and minerals when i import a ME1+(2xME2) level30 character instead of a ME1+ME2 level 30 character into ME3?

I guess it should be the same, but i heard that the enemies seem to be a bit stronger in the second playthrough with your old character.

It may be a stupid question but i don't want to play the same character a second time for just nothing.

I would prefer a playthrough with a different class.

Can you import your ME2 new game plus character to ME3?

You only get to choose one. The bonus skill on the additional playthrough (whether on the same character or on a new character if you've beaten ME2 once) you're talking about is a feature on the character creation options that will allow you to choose your Advanced Training skill before you start your playthrough. This allows you to be able to use that ability at the start of the game, like on the Cerberus Stations and Freedom's Progress.

Do note that you won't be able to change your Advanced Training until after you've acquired Mordin Solus and opened the Tech Lab, and you only have access to loyalty skills that you've unlocked: If you didn't unlock Legion's loyalty on your very first ME1 playthrough for instance, you'll have to acquire it another playthrough to be able to use select it on all future playthroughs. And loyalty abilities from DLC squadmates cannot be selected at the Character Creation screen for some reason (which means Zaeed's Inferno Grenades at the moment).

On your second playthrough with that character, the advanced weapons training/weapon selection is no longer available, hence if you've chosen assault rifles training for your Infiltrator, he'll no longer be able to choose the Infiltrator no matter how many times you replay your character.

Also, the Revenant is only available to a class that has Assault Rifle training by default - which would the Soldier.
