Say what you will, I'm not letting Thane die again.
Some of my party died. I don't feel like I failed.

Actually just because you got your teams slaughtered don't think Bioware will make everyones role smaller to take this into account.
In Dragon Age Origins, you could kick every character out of your party and pretty much solo the game. Bioware still wrote lines and significant plot points for each, even knowing you could be a jerk and not use any of them.
That's why i make sure everyone survives. I think the loading screens warn you enough that your ME 2 decisions could have dire consequences in ME 3. If most your squad dies, you are closing doors on a lot of the plot of ME 3. Also bear in mind, as someone said earlier, there are some signs that whomever survives will form the foundation for your crew in ME 3, minus a few departures (Samara, Legion).

I only lost Thane since I sent him in the vents, but I wouldn't have minded a few more dying. It is a suicide mission after all and everyone coming back alive seems less epic to me. Sacrifices have to be made. Did all the 'Dirty Dozen' survive? No, and it was a better movie because of that.

That's noble and all but I think most people will go back to their ME 2 saves and make sure everyone survives when they realize there are gaping holes in ME 3 they have to deal with as a result of all the deaths.

I like to stand by my decisions, and make minimal use of save games. Realism goes out the window if people reload for the "perfect" save to import into ME3. Yeah, it's a game, but it plays like a movie, and too many changes to modify the outcome seems a bit cheap.
