Though I didn't like the new inventory system and character advancement all that much I still think ME2 was better than the number 1. Not by a margin perhaps, but still better.
Now, if this game was to be the ultimate sci-fi gaming experience then my first wish would be that it would be a PC game first because it would allow devs to make bigger maps with more gameplay field and AI. Yet, we all know that's not going to happen. This is an Xbox 360 game that is ported to PC.
Onto the other matters. I think I would like the following in this game for this game to be near perfect (as well as features to retain):
1) First and foremost I think Bioware mastered the cinematic presentation and almost perfected it, so it can only get better at this point. So, so far I can not complain about Mass Effect 2's presentation at all. It simply blew me away. So, keep them
2) The performance! OMG! I have a 2 year old PC and it runs this game at highest quality at 1680x1050 resolution. So, I simply could not ask for more optimisation. Though game had some bugs here and there, I found it to be much less buggier than Dragon Age tbh. But this my experience really. (my system: 8800 GT, 2 gig ram and 2 gig quad core.) So, well done!
3) Story is great and it works. (just some terminology get a bit messy for a person who isn't lore or hi sci-fi swayed like Protheans, Geth, Reapers, Collectors etc...all explanations and revelations are fine but it just was set out to be very confusing (3 very vague concepts). Still, love the story line!
Now the things to improve:
1) Inventory management and more loots please. I mean I feel crippled by not being able to modify my inventory and equipment on the go. It was a step backwards really. Sure, the first game's inv system was messy as hell but rather than tweaking it, you got rid of it
2) Please bring back RPG to this game. I mean character progression is so limited. There aren't enough and interesting abilities. And please almost do away with passives. At least create a whole separate category and progression or something!
3) Exploration. We need bigger maps, alternative routes and uneven geography. I mean most of the game feels like we are just following corridors. No real world like feeling. Sure, the backdrops are so gorgeous and the world is much more detailed than the first one, but still it felt short imo.
4) Combat. I think I liked the direction it is heading (besides from it trying to be a more shooter, less tactical RPG). I had some real fun with combat this time around due to hit boxes etc. Blowing mech parts are just too much fun. But please make the combat slightly more tactical. The Ally AI is still hopeless also. And can we get a bit of veriety, Why every world we go have barriers/ covers ready for us as if they are hand placed for battle? Here where combat and environmental design should work together and decide on what kind of environmental things they want to bring into the combat besides 'too obvious' covers.
5) Please bring variety to the gameplay. Why is it in a real monotonous pace? Why is it: get mission, land on planet/ship, fight bunch of baddies (in same fricken way with no tactics or gametype options) and take off? It gets old after a while. You need to:
a) add more combat skills that are tactical or change the way combat works even.
c) make hacking real integrated part of the tactics so our engineers etc. could have viable tactical role besides offense.
Also, besides combat, add different gameplay types. And I am not talking about fetch quests but mainly add different interaction options with team mates. Have vehicle gameplay. Have non-combat planetary games or something. Have different sequences to missions. Make some missions only recon or infiltration etc. So, have variety of offensive, combat like missions/assignments and non-combative,social or even different gameplay type mini games.
6) Better consequence system. Sure, we make some choices but why not have consequences more often. I think while the destination of the main mission would be the same for everyone (fighting the same boss etc), the journey should be really personally tailored. We need not only dialogue options but some other consequences to our actions. Like there is no, 'oh ****, now I have to pay for my ruthless act on such and such planet' then a sequence of escaping or something starts. You can abruptly lose a crew member as a price of your action etc. Then again this must be much less scripted, more dynamic. But I guess such tech and programming power doesn't exist yet so it is fair.
I believe the things I listed would make the world feel more alive, make the game more tactical, more varied and much less monotonous and most of all, EPIC!
I just wanted to let it out there because I adore this game so much. It must be in my top 3 games of past decade (and a bit) really. Even with all of its flaws. (I don't feel the same way for Dragon Age for example, I got it on day one, I still didn't clock it).
Good luck Bioware and I am already looking forward to number 3!
