Hi there. I keep getting the following when I try to install my new copy of Mass Effect 2: "The installation of Mass Effect 2 failed. A data error occured." I have attempted to install the game three times. The first two times I entered the serial key and the game started installing only to fail after about 5%. The third time I installed directx first and then installed the game. It installed a considerable amount and was onto the second disc before I got the error again. Has anyone else had this problem.
PS: can someone tell me how to do a search on the forums. I sound like an idiot but I just cannot find the option.
The installation of Mass Effect 2 failed. A data error occured.

Until the worst of the message traffic influx is past, it seems that the site's Admin prefers to keep the Search hidden from everyone. There also is almost no active moderation for just about anything short of the very most blatant of the ToS agreement missteps.
Meanwhile, EA is apparently adding some sort of anti-copying gimmick to the disks, and it conflicts with some drives.

Thanks for the info Gorath, it makes their sticky about how to post a problem seem pretty goddam dumb "The forum has an awesome search feature." that you can't use. Brilliant. I copied the discs so now I have two iso files. Tried to run those and the install begins fine and then I get the same error while installing from iso 1 "A data error occured". I'm going to try unzipping all the .rar files next.

The same thing happened with Bethesda's Fallout 3, then Bioware's DA: O, so I recognized what it was this time around. I have several PCs, scattered in different rooms at home. They are connected by a wired LAN, and I used my backup file server machine (older model I don't use for gaming) with the DVD disk in it, shared with the game-capable boxes.ArabesQwert wrote...

It is easy enough fopr mostr folks rto call around to friends and family to find an external DVD drrive to borrow, but you can also copy the dvds to your hard drive and install from there.

I know this thread has been dead for a bit. I just wanted to add my experience in the hopes that it may help someone else. I had to reinstall windows, and thus mass effect 2. I was unable to re-install from my discs. "Data Error" at random points. This also occurred with the complimentary digital download from the EA server.
Long story short, my overclock that passed 24hrs Prime 95, 12hrs OCCT and 1.5hrs linpack was the culprit. I reset my processor to stock specifications and the install went on without any issues.
Just my experience. Hope it helps
