I have been collecting a large surplus of various precious stones (diamonds, garnets etc.). Are these used for anything or should I simply sell them? I look forward to your comments!
Gems-are they used for anything?

Keep Sapphires, Topaz, Amethysts, Malachites and Garnets, they have a use. Sell everything else.

I was under the impression that gems are only good for selling. Unless they are "remarkable", which makes them a gift, and a certain character will like them a lot.

Shale uses crystals which vary in quality. I have been merrily selling all the jewels that aren't gifts as I thought their only use was for selling them to traders. Has anyone found any use for them?

You can give them to the dwarven army in your camp, I believe... And the crystals Shale uses appear in the weapon and armor tabs of your menu, so there should be no confusion there.

All gifts for Shale are labelled "remarkable ..." such as "remarkable malachite."
There is a quest calling for collecting 10 garnets. Other than that, the only thing I know of is that full collection looks very nice in your storage chest if you have one.

Speaking of useful stuff, what items in the "Other" category have no use? I pick up vellums, for example.
As for Shale, what weapons does she use?

The dwarves will take Sapphires, Topaz, Amethysts, and Malachites turned into the Ally supply chest in camp. You get XP for turning things into the Ally supply chest.
10 garnets are needed to complete a quest.
Anything else in the "Other" category that can't be used, crafted, enchanted or gifted (like blank vellum, private documents, fancy vases, etc...) is generally only good for selling to vendors for money.

Storage chest? This is going away from my original post but how do you get a storage chest? Also, as the original author of this post I am not talking about any gems related to Shale what so ever. The other gems that you find are the ones in question!MGeezer wrote...

The storage chest is from the Warden's Keep DLC.

No, no, there is a bunch of wooden boxes in your base camp (not the Warden's Keep DLC). If you examine them, it reads "storage for your allies." You can dump various valuables into them, as donations for the armies you'll eventually gather.

there is the storage chest in Warden's Keep, another storage chest as a standalone DLC (places a chest just in front of the ally ones) and a group of wooden boxes marked for your allies ...this is where you dump the gems
also, 10 Garnets are needed for a sidequest (that's not really a spoiler is it?)
anybody knows if the gifts to the allies do anything other than xp for you? ...like say, making them stronger for when you need them?

Whoa, super thread necro.
Uhhh, gonna try to keep this minimal spoiler-ific. The party chest is part of the Warden's Keep DLC (Download Content) and is not part of the base game. Looks like you have the ultimate edition registered so you should have that available.
You can safely sell all gems in the game, except for garnets as you need 10 for a side quest, but it's useful to keep topazes, malachites, amethysts, and sapphires for something minor. Not a huge deal either way.
