I'm probably missing something here, but I just started a warrior character (Dalish elf) and started her out with DW specializations.  I'm level 6 now, have momentum, flurry and riposte, and a couple of nice daggers with bonuses.  Dex is 31, strength is 20 and she tears into darkspawn like a terrier on a chew toy.

But, I'm starting to wonder, why on earth did I make her a warrior?  As a rogue, she could have opened all those chests I wandered by and gotten backstab bonuses.  And coup de grace is the awesome sauce.  The bonuses aren't that good for toughness and bravery, are they?

I mean really, for a non-tank DW, why not stick with rogue?

Preference, I suppose.

My main (the charming fellow to the left) is a DW war. I like him cuz I don't care much for micromanaging so I just stick him in massive armor with two swords and send him into the fray. While the rest of my team works on the yellows and oranges, he clears up everything else.

I definitely can't match the utility and sheer power of a DW rogue, but I can run mindlessly into battle with full confidence of being the last one standing.

Yeah, warriors are tougher and don't have positional requirements. Basically they're just easier to play. The rogue, with proper management, will deal more damage and can open traps, but with a cunning build is a porcelain cannon.

But really, does the rogue have to be a porcelain cannon? Can't you just invest in strength and wear the heavier armours, just like a warrior? Mind you, it's tempting to just max the dex and depend on defense.

you can max dex and go duellist and their pretty much unhitable, yes.

Sure, you could, but then why play a rogue? High cunning is what makes the rogue worthwhile--persuade, locks, traps, stealing, combat stealth, armor pen... you could just get 30 cunning and max out deft hands and go for dex, I guess.  I've built a rogue both ways, and the high cunning build was a lot more fun, for me.

Short hand of these discussions ends up like this:

Maximum single target damage: Rogue

Maximum damage to a "mob": Warrior.

So really it comes down to: Do you want the utility of the rogue, or are you actually wanting a character that does nothing but turns enemies into mulch?

In the end, as noted above it really comes down to your personal preference.

The thing is, I've played two rogues already who were utility rogues: high cunning scouting/thieving/archery types. Lots of fun, but I thought I'd do something different, more close combat oriented. Thus the warrior. But after running my warrior for a few days, I couldn't figure out what advantage I was seeing with the a warrior over a rogue, even for fighting. I restarted today with a dex oriented rogue, and she's fighting just as well, but also has access to things like dirty fighting and eventually the duelist class.

It feels almost like a fourth character type. It's not really a traditional rogue, it's more like a warrior/duelist.

In terms of damage output, DW warriors are the best.

Strength focused DW with two full size weapons deals the greatest DPS.

(rise your dex til 36 then dump all your points into strength)

Wielding Starfang and Keening Blade at the same time is unstoppable.

If you never got to take berserking you definitly cut your build short.  +8 damage on each swing adds up very fast.

Hmmm...no hadn't done berserker. Didn't really fit in my character concept, but in the future. I don't know, to be honest, perhaps I just don't like playing warriors. Rogues and mages seem to require a bit more hands on playing about, which I like for the PC (if not for the other party members).

I'm in the opposite position. Have a dw rog, fixen to try a dw war with swords. Dmg seems lacking with daggers.

That's what happens when you fail on building your rogue :) You can reach 70% extra critical/backstab damage with daggers and some pieces of gear, with the bonuses you get from assassin and really little micromanagement ( Oh yes, is SO hard being in the side/rear of a mob.... wait, NO ) Dual daggers beat dual swords as far as you always do crits/bs's, something that happens almost all the time

Stealth lvl 3-4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All the armor you can equip con your char. Why do you need massive armor if with one simple click you disappear from the battle? :)

Dw dex dag rogues generally have a dmg output that scales smoothly with char leveling. They are also less party dependent.
Dw cun dag rogues will not meet the dmg output of their dex counterparts until ard lvl 11-12 and they tend to require party atk buffs like rally. Dw cun dag rogues dmg output do not scale smoothly. They receive a spike whenever key talents are gotten eg. lethality, exploit weakness, tainted blade(dlc)

Edit: Typos
