The story is amazing.
The art, cinematics and visuals are amazing.
The character creation, development and growth is extremely well-done.

So why am I telling people to -NOT- buy ME2?  The UI and control system.

The UI/control is HORRIBLE on the PC.

Honestly, I don't care if you were "constrained because it had to go to the console world."

It sucks.  Hard.  End of story.

1)  Lara Croft cameras.  Why can I not see around the LEFT side of a box, and I can clip through and shoot through the right edge without being seen?  -SO-many games have done this -so much- better it's amazing to see this game go backwards.

2)  Whomever decided that "'run' and 'take cover' and 'vault'" should all be on the same key-bind needs to be shot.  Twice.
ex 1: I invis.  Break cover and run...wait...why am I back in cover? My timer's running!
ex 2: I'm sprinting, cover's up ahead...almost....ther....wait, wtf, why am I "taking cover" HERE?  Oh, I ran too close to something, now I'm in bad cover and dead again.
etc...

3)  Remove "take cover."  Entirely.  It's way too contrived.  If I run up to something and run into it's hitbox, I should be "in cover" (crouched if need be.)  Right now I can hit the hitbox and still be shot from an angle.  I "take cover" and it turns me around 180deg and I stop being shot.  Why does turning me around 180deg suddenly make me have better cover?  If I'm crouched behind, say, a desk...why are they not blowing the top of my head off?

When your tactical position is dictated by retarded UI ideosyncracies (I must take cover only in certain positions or I cannot see around my cover re #1) then your UI is "in the way."

When your movement between cover points is dictated by "what am I going to sprint past that's going to screw me over" then your UI is "is in the way."

When you're in cover and the camera clips down close, and you can't move it and you can't see anything... your UI is "in the way."

You can tell which games are "made for the PC" and which are "made for the console."  This was obviously, sadly, made for the console and poorly ported.  The other big giveaway is that you remap a key, but then in-game messages still say "Press [F] to place the monument."  Um, hello, it's been remapped... computer QA please, instead of console QA which cannot remap keys.

You may, or may not change these things.  I would love to play this game in a Fallout3-style at worst, or a CounterStrike-with-peeking style at best.  Change "take cover" to just be "crouch" and let me move around while crouched.  I'm behind a row of planters...I'm not going to stand up to move 4 feet to the right.  C'mon.

ME2 is an amazing game, and phenominal is so many ways but due to the UI/controls issues .... I'm telling people to pass on it.  It's too clunky for anyone with any semblence of FPS gaming background, which is just about everyone I work with and am in contact with.

Note: these are from the perspective of an elevated difficulty level in which you have to "not suck" and a good UI actually matters.

When your tactics on the battlefield are dictated by your in-game user interface and controls ... you have a problem.  UI should be seamless, intuitive and NEVER impede the user regardless of your game or software application.

Thanks.

Hate to be the one to break this too you, but Mass Effect was at one time going to be 360 exclusive only. Was only later and correctly in my humble opinion was the first ported to PC and the 2nd co developed at the same time.
Anyways so basically because *YOU* struggle with the UI etc on the PC this means nobody else should buy the game for the PC eh ? Image IPB

Sure, why not?

I've passed on games before based on a friend's recommendation. Viral marketing works both ways.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to poison-pill or "make BioWare pay" or anything lame but I will warn people and if that affects their decision...so be it.

It's a great game, and if you don't have any FPS background or if you care more about story than playing the action portions it's great.

I hate it because my character runs around all the time. She has no walk function like in ME1. and she has a limp that no one at Bioware can logically explain. If i'm in the club, on the normandy, exploring the levels. I DON'T NEED TOO RUN AROUND LIKE I'M PLAYING GEARS OF WAR. They should have just let the controlls stay the same.

This is such a minor detail. Yes, it deviates from the first game. No, it's not unmanageable. I adjusted to it in about 30 minutes and now it feels perfectly natural.

You can walk(limp), BUT only if you touch the analog stick with a FEATHER. If you move the stick even a little with your fingers, then you start running, Unlike in ME1, were their was actual play in the analog controlls. Bioware definitly messed with the controlls, and they messed it up.Image IPB

My computer blows 360s out of the water.

Why would I play on inferior hardware, with worse graphics and sound and a stupid little controller?

Auto-aim was created for consoles because you guys can't use mouse/keyboard and your aiming blows without it.
Same with the "over the shoulder camera" lameness because auto-aim would jerk your reticle (and thus your camera) all over so they moved the camera.

I love the PC controls. The ONLY problem I have is the use/sprint/cover is on one button. But other then that, I do not see any of the other issues you are talking about.

This thread is about PC controls.

Clarification: you can easily walk in ME2 PC.

I think you're just not giving yourself enough time to get used to it.

Being an infiltrator and now playing on insane, I ran into this issue a couple times you described: Cloaked, tried to run the hell away, ran smack into a crate and ducked, didn't have enough time to get out and got smoked because of it.

Just like how when I first started playing all of the controls felt clunky to me, but after a couple hours it started to feel natural and now I don't think I'll be able any differently now =)

So, to reiterate, give it some more time, it gets to feel more natural.

I see your point but I think the controls are great on PC. Yes, some camera and key bindings features are altogether missing. The cover system is a gameplay mechanic. Its not a physical simulation of combat. I would rather have the current "gears" style cover system than have none at all. Would you prefer to go back to the old style of ME1, where you get stuck in cover, cant get in cover, and have your AI squadmates stand still while getting shot and shooting at boxes. I think ME2 is an improvement for sure. Maybe you just need to get more used to it.

no he is saying when they ported the first one to the PC they optimized it for said PC. this one was developed at the same time and they did not optimize it for PC.

i should be able to switch weapons with a hot key without pressing shift. i should have a different button for go to cover and run. i should be able to bring up my squad or journal without going to a menu.

its the little things

:innocent:

I've heard from many critics that the graphics on the PC and the graphics on the xbox 360 are pretty much exactly the same, even with the pc graphics settings on the highest. As for sound, I would think that sound would actually be superior when playing on a console, especially if you have surround sound. And a game like mass effect controls much better when playing with a controller rather than a keyboard. it's a game that was made for the xbox 360, but ported to the PC.

when you are in cover, you don't need to sprint

when you are sprinting out in the open, you don't need a button to take cover

when you are in heavy combat, you probably don't need to use/interact with objects

as such, it makes sense to have all three on the same button. reducing needless complexity is a good thing.

Being shot is too kind a punishment for the genius behind making sprint/cover/vault/AND USE all one key. I have crap loads of unused keys, USE MORE THAN ONE!

So, your complaint is that a console game feels clunky on the pc, and when told that it plays great on the 360, which it does, you ask why you should play it on the 360? Sounds like you just want to whine about UI issues. Not sure where your nerdrage regarding autoaim is relevant, the xbox 360 version of ME2 doesn't use autoaim. Lumping all console users in one category that universally is terrible at aiming just makes you look like a tool. Sorry you didn't enjoy ME2, I'm sure there are lots of other games out there you will enjoy.

I am 100% certain that you actually have no idea what "UI" actually is.
What you are describing actually has absolutely nothing to do with the UI.

The UI is the non-gameworld, 2D layer on top of the 3D world in which you play.
Some of the things that are part of the UI are:

- The power wheel
- Your and your parties health/shield bars
- Your action buttons 1-9
- The little pop-up boxes that appear when some event occurs (e.g. "You gain 300 credits!")

The following are NOT part of the UI:

- 3D Boxes and/or cover spaces that may or may not be in your travel path.
- The camera with which you view the 3D world.
- Any clipping effects between the camera and the environment.
- etc.

If you are going to rant. At least know wtf it is you are ranting about, imho.
For the UI to ever "get in the way" you would need something like a pop-up that is constantly covering most of the screen. Or some other screen element that is consistently blocking your view of the action (or the 3D world).

All that being said, I agree, the cover system is sometimes difficult, but it is nowhere close to as bad as the group AI system is.
