All the functions tied into spacebar kind of play hand in hand so i'm not sure why you need seperate keys to feel like its made for the computer. I see there are situations where it feels counter-intuitive to you, and I have had the same problems - but it wasn't the end of all worlds, and I simply adjusted to it. Its just a nuance to keep in mind, after that it was smooth as butter.
Are you just conditioned to have 30+ key bindings for a pc game? Or are you simply fussing about the lack of ability to customize the controls more? Either way for me it didn't detriment the experience of the game enough to shelve it. Seriously, you are missing out on a phenomenal experience. Its not like you are shelving mahjong here or something blah because it has a control scheme you don't like. I wouldn't hold your breathe over changes in the control scheme, and in that case - that would be your loss mang.

The UI/control is HORRIBLE on the PC...
I totally agree. After finishing ME2 I can tell you the UI sucks until the end. ME1 was much better, even though it still had the automatic auto-cover aspect you had to avoid. ME2 makes the idiotic auto-cover gimmick required almost since they eliminated crouching and made "uncovered" hiding less effective. The only positive aspect is that they did make auto-cover a manual choice now. Even on Insanity level I am finding ways to avoid using it, I hate it so much.
I probably wouldn't mind it so much except for the fact that the auto-cover doesn't even work properly. Objects which obviously should provide "cover", don't, and auto-cover works only with pre-ordained objects which you have no visual clue as to what is or is not "cover". Sometimes even tall invulnerable boxes, which you would ordinarily think auto-cover would work with, don't accept auto-cover. That is why the sniper rifle is so important in this game since the only way to avoid their design stupidity is to stand back and snipe from behind something without official "cover".
Plus your movement is so restricted in "cover" mode, you cant break away from "cover" in a believable way, your back sticking to the wall as if by super-glue. Whoever created "auto-cover" should be sacked. It is really stupid, at least the way its been implemented. Conceptually, auto-cover is designed for "campers", so therefore it is a shooter designed by noobs who always get killed fast in real shooters. Auto-cover is their revenge, to show the world that camping is a strategically viable way to fight. In reality though, it is just noob stupidity magnified.
And whose stupid idea was it to put the radar in a <shift-key> menu? Since when is a "Heads Up Display" suddenly a "Heads Down Display"? Design stupidity at its peak. Even cars have instrumentation displays directly in front of you ... if they didn't, they would be illegal. Why? Because its stupid not to. And dangerous. In a game, danger should come from the storyline and not the UI. Its completely unbelievable that a technologically advanced 22nd century scenario would have17th century ergonomic design insight.

How Shepard's constipated-limp-walk got past QA is beyond me. It's so blatantly obvious, and looks unbelievably retarded.
I hope it's fixable in a future patch release, and I really do hope they fix it.
That is all.

I've never noticed my health bar and stuff being in the way, but the auto-target thingy is pretty damn annoying when you're trying to move a party member up front, but end up using Overload on an explosive crate right in front of you. If I wanted to target that crate, I would have held my crosshair over the crate and not behind a normal crate, like I did.
I realize that this feature is necessary on a console, but it really isn't on a PC.
I too come from a FPS background, but I still enjoy ME2 dispite these little faults. And if someone asked me if they should buy it, I would say 'yes, you should'

Not going to happen. That would require re-animating the character, and i'd suspect that goes beyond whatever budget they have reserved for patches. So you can have bugs fixed or a new walking animation

Hahahahhaha, I never thought of it that way. Cover is for noobs, I find it dull and dopey as well. Especially when you can just sit there ad infinitum and never have to worry about the enemy approaching you - they sit behind cover ad infinitum as well LOL (other than the krogans)

So I'll take a 'take cover' button over auto-cover anyday of the week and twice on sundays. That having been said I do want my radar screen back, and I do really wish they had a 'vault' key that was seperate from the 'take cover' key. If you're going to build 3-d platformer-ish levels where you have to go bouncing up and down to different platform height this is just basic functionallity.

Auto-aim was created for consoles because you guys can't use mouse/keyboard and your aiming blows without it.
Same with the "over the shoulder camera" lameness because auto-aim would jerk your reticle (and thus your camera) all over so they moved the camera.

Actually, nearly anyone can use mouse/keyboard to aim.. people like you are relegated to them because you don't have the coordination to use analog sticks effectively. Not vice versa. You're aiming blows without mouse/keyboard too by your own admission.
I love it when people talk about how great they are at aiming with a mouse... the same thing geriatrics can use to click on icons and online scrabble games.
There's no shame in preferring mouse/keyboard, but attacking those who can use controllers better than you just because you suck at it makes you come off as a tool.

well, no, I don't think that a PC would cost less than a console, with the constant upgrading that you'd have to do to make sure that it's not out-dated.
I spent a whopping 80 bucks upgrading my PC the last hmmm around 5-6 years, video card upgrade only. It runs this game on high settings... Maybe you shouldn't buy the latest greatest so often? Lets see since I buy roughly 2 games a month times 12=24*5=120*10 bucks over charge each game=$1,200 extra I would of spent on buying games during same time period. How many times would I of had to switch consoles in that period... cost is about same if not better PC side if you don't go overboard. If you can then it gives a much better gaming experience than any console can. Though that might change in next consoles fi they are more open to modding and such.

Also, I do not feel that console games are "dumbed-down". And I don't think that just because ME 2 feels more like a shooter means that it was "dumbed down."
I do, my opinnion and I believe that it is also of the majority of game players that tasted both waters. Just my opinnion though not saying you have to believe me just stating what I think. IT is getting less so but still prevenlant. and yes I think taking an RPG and making it a shooter is "dumbing down" gameplay style. Not bad if you are into shooters... And not saying ME2 is "dumbed down", I haven't played it enough to say that yet. maybe this weekend...

It is still a role playing game in that you are still playing a ROLE. An RPG doesn't have to
By that definition all games are RPGs

Honestly, I don't care if you were "constrained because it had to go to the console world."
It sucks. Hard. End of story.
1) Lara Croft cameras. Why can I not see around the LEFT side of a box, and I can clip through and shoot through the right edge without being seen? -SO-many games have done this -so much- better it's amazing to see this game go backwards.
2) Whomever decided that "'run' and 'take cover' and 'vault'" should all be on the same key-bind needs to be shot. Twice.
ex 1: I invis. Break cover and run...wait...why am I back in cover? My timer's running!
ex 2: I'm sprinting, cover's up ahead...almost....ther....wait, wtf, why am I "taking cover" HERE? Oh, I ran too close to something, now I'm in bad cover and dead again.
etc...
3) Remove "take cover." Entirely. It's way too contrived. If I run up to something and run into it's hitbox, I should be "in cover" (crouched if need be.) Right now I can hit the hitbox and still be shot from an angle. I "take cover" and it turns me around 180deg and I stop being shot. Why does turning me around 180deg suddenly make me have better cover? If I'm crouched behind, say, a desk...why are they not blowing the top of my head off?
When your tactical position is dictated by retarded UI ideosyncracies (I must take cover only in certain positions or I cannot see around my cover re #1) then your UI is "in the way."
When your movement between cover points is dictated by "what am I going to sprint past that's going to screw me over" then your UI is "is in the way."
When you're in cover and the camera clips down close, and you can't move it and you can't see anything... your UI is "in the way."
You can tell which games are "made for the PC" and which are "made for the console." This was obviously, sadly, made for the console and poorly ported. The other big giveaway is that you remap a key, but then in-game messages still say "Press [F] to place the monument." Um, hello, it's been remapped... computer QA please, instead of console QA which cannot remap keys.
Thanks.

Ya know, I have been trying to express my same feelings about the UI and controls for the PC also. The first game was much more refined for the PC cause they re-rote the game for the PC. I was under the impression that they were going to do the same thing for ME 2, make a version for the PC not just port it over. Mater of fact, all the things they changed in ME 2 from ME 1 were complants from the Console players. In my opion the first game for the PC was a near perfect game, all they needed to do was continue the story, not change the gameplay for the PC version.
I like the game and still playing it, because I know that it is like a 100 to 1 ratio of Console to PC players and Bioware is not going to spend the rescources to correct thier mistake. It's a shame, but since Console players rule the mainstream gaming scene that will be constant problem with games in the future. We can blame most of this on MS since they forced Bungie to make Halo only for the Xbox and started this trend of the console FPS genra that sold billions of copies. And even after they made Halo for the PC and it was a better game in most ways, it never sold in the same numbers as the xbox version.

Bah! If useing your thumbs for a control method was the best way to
control a item, don't you think the military would have swtiched all
its fighters to using little thumb doo dads to control the jets? Even
the control method for the remotes still use full sized aircraft
controls. (BTW I know this is not a flight sim, but the statement rings
true for most aplications, Driving, Flying, Shooting, go to a firing
range and shoot a real gun to see what I mean)
The other thing
that shoots holes in you statement is MS in house research that showed
for a FPS control the mouse and keyboard would dominate in multiplayer,
so hence they don't allow the PC and xbox halo's play against each
other. Of course there excuse they sent to the press was that it was
too hard to make them mesh since they were different games.

Hate to be the one to break this too you, but Mass Effect was at one time going to be 360 exclusive only. Was only later and correctly in my humble opinion was the first ported to PC and the 2nd co developed at the same time.
Anyways so basically because *YOU* struggle with the UI etc on the PC this means nobody else should buy the game for the PC eh ?
Hate to break it to YOU but ME 2 was developed for 360/PC at the same time so your argument is nonexsistant.
