If i had to choose three characters they would be (in no particular order) Garrus, Williams, and Zaeed.
All others can be NPC's for the story (but please bioware, make them have a more interactive and meaningful role in this one than those who returned in ME2.).

Only three? ONLY THREE? Aw, junk...I guess I'll have to go with Thane. Thane. Uh, Thane, and I guess it wouldn't work without Garrus and Tali. I could live without Tali, maybe throw Liara into the mix. LI or not, doesn't matter. I romance Liara almost all the time, but she kinda throws you aside with her Shadow Broker obsession, I always go for someone on the SR2. If I could take four, I'd go Garrus, Jack, Liara and Thane. The other squaddies could show up on certain missions, like a number of them had taken positions at certain outposts, or some stupid thing. Oh, and if any of you could click this link, that'd be great.
