A lot of people would disagree with you regarding the CoD franchise.  Modern Warfare made so many vast improvements on the "hop online, do team deathmatch" model that it could very well be said to have revolutionized it.  It's what people bought MW2 for.  I personally hate what they did regarding IWnet, but it's hard to deny that the gameplay is incredible.

Bioware's chasing the shooter market with the ME franchise.  Trouble is, they ain't great shooters, and there are plenty of games out there that are.

I'd say it has sold more than that, given this is week 2 for the game and it has already sold 1 million worldwide, not including the PC version. So I'd say it is very close to 2 million.

Modern Warfare 2 is the most overhyped game I've ever played. I can't deny it's FPS controls and accessibility, but really it's quite awful. And that's coming from a person who liked the first one (well, the SAS parts)

I bought mine online, but I have a friend who was at a gaming store recently buying some stuff and he said that, while he was, there, every single person that walked in, from teenage girls to middle-aged men in suits, bought Mass Effect 2.

So I have little doubt it's selling like crazy.

Is Bioware great at anything outside of being able to write dialogue better than almost everyone?

Do they do the best 3D engine? No.

Master of production value and polishing? No.

Master of gameplay? No.

So are most gamers interested in dialogue, roleplay or quality stories? Nope. <_<

I think they will definitively feel the backlash with The old republic, since most mmorpg players seek PvP,lot of raiding or well created boss battle in raids and this is an area where Bioware has zero experience (and they will screw up along the way).

CoD MW2 is great game, like 6 hours short (on Veteran) but awesome. It also has MP, that's the main reason it sells so well.

Nobody buys the MW series for the single-player, which may be why you disliked it.

The Bioware Austin team is composed of mostly veteran MMORPG developers.

Sure, but that doesn't mean the gameplay/raiding/pvp will be great. :P Who's actually the lead designer of The old republic? If you played every Bioware game so far,you can admit that they have no credential pointing toward them being master of gameplay.Blizzard on the other hand, already had Diablo and player vs player games under their belts (and Blizzard are master of polish and production value).

In other words,I can't see The old republic touching World of Warcraft.Even if I suspect the old republic could get superior reviews because of how it push the genre forward.

My personal opinion on Bioware, expressed in another thread, is that they like telling stories, not so much making great RPGs.  I always prefer their competitors' approach (Icewind Dale, KotOR II) even when dealing with the exact same gameplay mechanics/setting, simply because Bio has a thing for letting you play their character, rather than really giving you the ability to flesh out your own creation.  It helps them tell their epic story better, sure, but I don't like it.

The Old Republic is, I think, not going to do nearly as well as Bioware fans predict, if any of the information I've seen on it is accurate.  I mean, it's got dialogue wheels and NPC companions; it's not an MMO, it's a cooperative RPG.

Games like Modern Warfare are stupid hype games.

Have you ever actually played Modern Warfare online?  It's awesome fun, and addictive as all hell.  Hell, with CoD4 I must have played that game consistently for two years after its release.  Calling that game a stupid hype game should come with a prerequisite of punching you in the face for being so outspokenly ignorant.  Fantastic game.  Fan-tas-tic.

And yes, I'm here to defend it.

You just prove my point as to why old wrpg weren't very popular. Most gamer won't ever care about roleplaying or the quality of the dialogue.

Planescape:torment can be considered as a masterpiece and Avellone can be pleased with it for the rest of his life for all I care.He know as well as I do that gamers do not care and they did not in 1999 as well.Bioware has always been able to sell 2-3 million copies of their game because the stories are cliche or epic of you like.I doubt they will ever be able to go beyond their 2-3 million plateau, but we will see if Mass effect 2 can go beyond 3.

Bethesda can't write or create interesting characters/stories? Doesn't matter, since most gamer don't care and will buy Oblivion or Fallout to explore and kill plenty of monsters along the way ( and collect a lot of gear/loot).Fallout 3 outsold the first one by 10 to 1 or something like that ( 4 000 000 to 400 000 for the original).

They are close to selling one million copies. Life can't be that bad in the BioWare universe!

But someone correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause my only comparison is the music industry: if you sell a million copies in the video game industry, is that considered a huge success?

major titles that come out before Christmas will always do better than games that come out just after the festive season. most of my friends that play games are still playing through the games they got for Christmas. Add to that, not everyone is flush with cash in January too.

I wouldn't call ME2 sales bad - they are still probably Bio-ware's best for a first week. Also Bio-ware will make more continual money off of the games through DLC and expansions.

They have a smaller number of players but very dedicated players.

No,1 million should be where you won't lose money on the project (since the game isn't sold to retailers at 50-60$ but probably around 30$).

2 million copies is where you have a solid profit.A real success is the 5 million plateau, which is quite rare.Outside of Nintendo, the game which reached the 5 million plateau in the last few years are:

Final fantasy
Call of duty
Halo
Gears of war
Gran turismo
GTA
The sims
WOW
Resident evil 5
Assassin creed

It is, without a doubt.  And for a game like this that will sell a minimum of 3 million copies, it is hugely succesful.  And to reiterate what Makato said - The MW franchise is a fantastic FPS online arcade twitch shooter.  I played CoD4 from the day it was releaed until MW2 came out and will be playing MW2 just as long.  I can't comment on the SP on either game because even after sinking 25 days of online time into both games, I have never played the SP.

The other question is. Are those just copies sold in retail stores or does that also include online sales and D2D downloads that were purchased? You also cannot compare ME2 to MW2 as Mass Effect 2 was only released on two platforms, where Modern Warfare 2 was released on 4

The average cost of an HD game is 28-30 million $$$,so selling 1 million copies will cover the cost.Anything under 1 million is a flop and can end up being career killing for a studio(look at Bionic commando,Too human or Haze which ended up being studio killing game or close to it).
