They are close to selling one million copies. Life can't be that bad in the BioWare universe!

But someone correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause my only comparison is the music industry: if you sell a million copies in the video game industry, is that considered a huge success?

No,1 million should be where you won't lose money on the project (since the game isn't sold to retailers at 50-60$ but probably around 30$).

2 million copies is where you have a solid profit.A real success is the 5 million plateau, which is quite rare.Outside of Nintendo, the game which reached the 5 million plateau in the last few years are:

Final fantasy
Call of duty
Halo
Gears of war
Gran turismo
GTA
The sims
WOW
Resident evil 5
Assassin creed

That's kind of a blanket statement saying 1 million in sales gets you back to even and 2 million gets you a profit.  Obviously, it all depends upon the development cost of the game in question.  Look at an outfit like FROM Software which is a fairly small developer - Demon's Souls hasn't sold a million copies worldwide and I would guarantee you that they turned a nice profit on that game.

The average cost of an HD game is 28-30 million $$$,so selling 1 million copies will cover the cost.Anything under 1 million is a flop and can end up being career killing for a studio(look at Bionic commando,Too human or Haze which ended up being studio killing game or close to it).

That can be said for any product that is overhyped and underperforms though.  And where do you get a number of $28-30 million from?  Look at Haze, that game was delayed how many times?  I just looked up the numbers and can' believe it actually sold 800K..

It is, without a doubt.  And for a game like this that will sell a minimum of 3 million copies, it is hugely succesful.  And to reiterate what Makato said - The MW franchise is a fantastic FPS online arcade twitch shooter.  I played CoD4 from the day it was releaed until MW2 came out and will be playing MW2 just as long.  I can't comment on the SP on either game because even after sinking 25 days of online time into both games, I have never played the SP.

I'm with you with CoD4 -> MW2! This year should be an entertaining year for us.

Thanks for the info!

Games like COD and Halo sell more for a few reasons:

1. They are easier to learn and understand. Thus, a casual gamer can pick it up more easily than an rpg.

2. You can play COD and Halo with friends. Many people play games as a social event. You can't do that with an rpg.

3. Games like COD and Halo have more replay value than an rpg like Mass Effect ever could. ME has a story. Once that story is over, you are done with the game. Sure, you can play it again and test out different choices/builds, but most people dont do that since the game is significantly less enjoyable on those subsequent playthroughs due to the fact that you know the story already. So for most people, Mass Effect provides about 30-35 hours of gameplay, for which they pay 50 dollars. A multiplayer game like COD can provide pretty much unlimited hours of gameplay for 50 dollars. Thus, the game holds significantly more value.

I think the 2nd and 3rd reasons are important. Some people here may play a game like ME like 10 times through just to see different builds and choices, but that is a small minority of players. And even then, you can still get A LOT more time out of a multiplayer game.

i like halo also but i hate cod cod is just your everyday shooter hyped to the point where people THINK its good...kinda like how the actors and actresses in twilight are regular looking people but they get hyped so much people THINK they are hot-

Whats with all this CoD hate?  The first MW was an awesome game, that wasn't too hyped, and kinda earned it.  Fun as hell if you even had 1 friend to play MP with.  The second one kinda road in on the firsts coattails, and was overhyped, but the first stands on its merits alone.

I agree with you about MW1 and 2... but Mass Effect 2 is better than MW1 and 2 put together in my book.

I play console/PC, a vast majority of console players that I meet favor the shooter genre. The momentum this game had gained from ME 1 favored the RPG genre which are scarce on XBL (I only have 2 friends that are RPG fans and 50+ are shooter fans).

yup, and true shooter fans will not like ME2 because its to talkative and to much non shooting time in it!

I don't play or like FPS games and pretty much limit myself to RPG and ARPG games. I think that there is way too much talking and cut-scenes in this game.

The game sold 900k + in one week. It's selling extremely well.

I swear this board is bizzaro world. It's easily the most critical place on the 'net when it comes to "ME2" or Bioware in general. Critical isn't even the right word. Delusional is a better word.

Video Game Sales are sadly far under say movie sales in general. Partly because they require so much dedication and special equipment to enjoy. However... A Million Copies in a week is damn amazing. Easily one of the best grossing weeks for Video games ever.

And don't go so far as to say folks don't like RPG's.

WoW takes in about 150 Million dollars a month... WoW has only sold about 12-13 Million coppies in 6 Years... But it has made Billions...

The highest grossing Video game Franchises(Such as Mario, and Final Fantasy) the entire Franchise has only drawn in in the 100-200 million dollar range. WoW is listed somewhere around 30 Million... Because they're only counting sales not recurring fees.

WoW takes in more money every 2 Months than the Mario franchise has made in it's entire existence... WoW is in a position to not only be the most profitable video game of all time... But might actually one day make more profit in it's entire run than all video games in the world combined. It has drawn in at least 6 Billion dollars for Blizzard and will continue to net even more after the next expansion.

So I wouldn't say no one likes RPG's cause WoW has been doing pretty damn good. Hell in 6 Years WoW has blown away the profits of every movie ever made. Not even Avatar with it's sickeningly successful run can hold a candle to that game.

Which also brings me to another thought that I am sure the Mass Effect folks have contemplated for after ME 3... A Mass Effect MMO I think could do amazingly well seeing as how it wouldn't be attempting to contend with the Major player in the market but rather slip in and take up a niche that most other MMO's simply are not filling...

The thing is critics can say whatever they want and a game can score amazingly, but word of mouth is saying that the game is not as good as people are making it out to be and to not fall for the hype.

Lots of message boards, including this one, are filled with negative comments and reviews. The crowd that made the first the success that it was has been alienated with the new systems, and people are talking about all the negative aspects of the game.

EA can throw all the money they want at advertising but it won't matter as long as the players are not placated.

A few things, shipped to retailers is sold for Bioware/EA they got paid for 2 million copies, so whether those copies are on shelves or in peoples hands makes no difference to anyone(except retailers), secondly Mass Effect ended up being a kind of under the radar game when it released and alot of people are picking up ME2 as their first ME game so as this game increases in popularity expect sales of the entire franchise to rise, no multiplayer means a large section of the 360 audience will automaticly ignore this game I dont like that fact but it's true, take a look at bioshock alot of people ignored due to the abscence of multiplayer same with the first uncharted on PS3

The first Mass effect didn't sell all that well either,so you have no point there. :P

Nice try,but you fail to properly explain the situation.Even Baldur's gate 2 sold around 2 million copies and the word of mouth was amazing so:

Bioware game are usually rated well or high, but there's too much dialogue for a lot of people. It's a style that won't please everyone and this is significant when you try to aim and please the mass market.

I'm a shooter fan since Doom and I skipped MW2 because of several reasons. But I bought ME2 and I'm glad. I played MW2 at a friend's but the story is just absurd and everything is scripted leaving you no real choice.

This sense of entitlement some people around here have is nothing short of sickening, This idea that they have to make a game specifically for you is absurd

I helped make ME1 a success by buying it and i love ME2, neither EA or Bioware has alienated me in any way shape or form the same can be said for most of my friends and the majority of people on gaming forums i frequent. Most of these people also bought ME1 and by doing so also helped ensure it success.

You didn't contribute any more or less then I did and millions of others did so i would appriciate of you didn't try to speak on my or anyone else's behalf again

ME1 was a must buy but by skipping ME2 one would miss nothing too important and unless ME3 is a major improvement over ME2 I don't really even want to know how the trilogy ends. Before ME2 was released I advertised it to friends as something you will need to buy but I quickly corrected that statement after I got the game. Instead of PC RPG we got a console third person shooter which *none* of my friends will buy. Not at full price anyway.
