*warning* Dunno if this has been posted before.

My first playthrough, i played a Vanguard. Did all loyalty quests. all ship upgrades etc.
The Vanguard was a import from ME1.
Now on my second playthrough i imported my old ME1 save (the vanguard), started a new game as a Sentinel.
When i did the Collector ship quest where halfways you can pick up Sniper Rifle or Shotgun, on the Vanguard playthrough i just got those two alternatives. But on my second playthrough now, i also got the choice of picking up Assault Rifle training. So now i can use assault rifle on the Sentinel.
Thought i should post about it, since i have seen alot of pepole asking if they can get assault rifle on other chars then Soldiers. Dont know if what i have experienced counts for Adepts and other classes.

Cheers Meto :)

Can't confirm this myself (Doing a Vanguard FemShep Run on ME1 with the Assault Rifle Bonus, for completing my Soldier MaleShep)

yea you either get SR, AR, or shotgun training. If you are a soldier your choice would be an upgraded version of the weapon you pick. Same thing for vanguard, if they choose shotgun.

You get the option to choose in any weapon training that your class doesn't have, or an upgraded version of a weapon that you already have in the case of classes with weapon training beyond pistols.

Infiltrators can choose an anti-material (super strong) sniper rifle, or assault rifle training, or shotgun training.

Vanguard can upgrade their shotgun, or get assault rifles, or sniper rifles.

Soldiers can upgrade one of their weapons

question: for a sentinel, which is a better choice, AR or sniper rifle? I am in dilemma. On the one hand, sniper rifle would give me more range that I have now with just smg and heavy pistol, but assault rifle might be of more practical use. suggestions?

you can choose between getting a weapon proficiency that you don't have, so it can be sniper, shotty or AR depending on your class, and a tier 3/4 weapon of a proficiency you do have. you can only pick this up on your first run through the game, reruns on the same char skip this pick up.

I picked SR twice on the sentinel.  I really like the tempest SMG tho, with war ammo is quite deadly.

Your remembering how this works wrong.
Vanguards get to pick from these three options
-A new Shotgun (claymore)
-learn how to use sniper rifles you've already picked up. (no new weapon)
-learn how to use assault rifles you've picked up (no new weapon)

Sentinels get these options:
-learn how to use shotguns (no new weapon)
-learn how to use assault rifles (no new weapon)
-learn how to use sniper rifles (no new weapon)

Soldiers get these options
-a new shotgun (claymore)
-a new sniper rifle (widow)
-a new assault rifle (revenant)

Do you see the pattern here? If you already have a shotgun , you get a new shotgun. if you don't, you get to use shotguns.

you should also know that on "your second playthrough" you don't get to make this choice on the collector ship again. once you pick, that's your choice for the rest of the game.

I find the assault rifle allright, versatile. But i have the Tempest SMG aswell. I like tho get in close and personal, and thats nice with sentinel due to the shield knockback/damage when the tech armor breaks. But i guess it boils down to your prefered style of play.

sentinel is a hard choice. its a toss up really, if your happy with your pistols(hvy and smg) and your abilities getting through enemies protection, go with the sniper. if you feel like you want more anti protection stuff go for the AR. if you find yourself close to enemies alot of the time then the AR is better, if you sit back then sniper. *shrug* choose what suits your playstyle

the SR is more of a back up weapon for a sentinel. Its good to have a long range advantage in certain instances, specially on insanity.

I prefered the Vindicator AR over the Viper SR on my Sentinel. It does much more damage at medium range, which is where you have to be at to use your powers

How is the assault rifle? All the classes I've played either haven't had one or I choose the sniper rifle as my 'extra' (LOVE the sniper)

The assault rifle is basically SMG on crack (bit better range, bit better damage) which is why I don't use it. The SMG does a great job of being a generic short to short-med range weapon... the Sniper rifle picks up all the rest of the slack. My "insanity" sentinel Tore things up with the semi-auto Sniper rifle.

lower fire rate than a smg.

longer distance than a smg.

more damage than an smg at medium and long disance

I really like the assault rifle. I do much more damage with a controlled 5 round burst that is on target than with a 50 round spray from an SMG that kicks too much to be accurate. Sniper rifle is handy at range, but when you are being rushed the field of view of the scope is limiting.

Assault Rifle has good range and ammo, and its good weapon to run and gun with.

Sniper takes people down fast though.

SMG is still better than an AR at close range.

It does more damage than an SMG at close distance as well.

Depends on the AR.  The Vindicator hits extremely hard at any range, but it's a burst-fire weapon, and clearly more for ranged battles due to its high accuracy.  The Revenant (not an option unless you already know how to use ARs) is apparently the best close-range gun in the game.

I'm not so sure about that.  The Vindicator has much better range than the SMG, and much higher accuracy, and is a "Medium" penetration weapon.  Its drawback is relatively low ammo count and burst rather than full auto.

The revenant is not an option for a sentinel tho. Are there even any smg upgrades besides the tempest? I have yet to run into one.
