The assault rifle is basically SMG on crack (bit better range, bit better damage) which is why I don't use it. The SMG does a great job of being a generic short to short-med range weapon... the Sniper rifle picks up all the rest of the slack. My "insanity" sentinel Tore things up with the semi-auto Sniper rifle.

I'm not so sure about that.  The Vindicator has much better range than the SMG, and much higher accuracy, and is a "Medium" penetration weapon.  Its drawback is relatively low ammo count and burst rather than full auto.

the  vindicator's accuracy its acquire by it being a burst weapon. At close range, an smg would do more damage.

I picked the AR for my sentinel. The Vindicator works fine as a ranged weapon (great with accuracy upgrade), with the only downside being ammo consumption. I had an AR on my Sentinel in ME1, so I was very glad to find this :)

For a biotic, it's probably best to go sniper. If you zoom in with the rifle, you can get enemy healthbars and targeting reticules to show up from farther. Then you can trigger your biotics while scoped, drastically increasing their range.

I doubt it.

The Avenger beats out the Tempest on everything but Shields/Barriers at close range.
The Vindicator beats out the Tempest on everything at any range.
The Geth Pulse Rifle can't beat the Tempest at close range against anything.
This assumes you have all research upgrades.

the vindicator is a burst weapon. Is not as good as a fully upgraded tempest at close range. The firing rate of the smg is just so much higher, even against the fully auto avenger.

The Vindicator absolutely outclasses the Tempest if you're landing head shots at any range.

If you're firing from the hip or spraying with either weapon, sure, the Tempest wins.

But if you're popping from cover and are able to land the head shots at 'point blank' the Vindicator outclasses nearly everything.

Thats not to say the Tempest doesn't have a role.  But in ANY situation not involving MASSIVE shields or barriers (and you don't want to waste your heavy weapon) the Vindicator wins.  Dropping a YMIR mech's top layer is what the Tempest is built for.  Anywhere else, its second rate.

By that logic, the Avenger is better than the Vindicator. We all know thats completely false.
Whether its full auto, semi-auto, or not auto is only a part of the damage equation.
Penetration, friction, and damage per bullet also matter.

Its huge. Its basically the long-range equivelent of an SMG in every regard.

SMG's are made for close range hip firing, of course.  AR are much more tactical, but I just think they are unnecessary for sentinels, and SR training would make a better addition.

Nope, from what I can gather the pickup selection doesn't happen on a second playthrough.

the tempest gets more bullets outs per minute.

Lower calibre bullets. It's almost like saying that an Uzi is better than an M-16 or M-4.

One thing to mention - if you go with the item you can already use (i.e. shotgun with a Vanguard) you get a squadmate-specific weapon stronger than any other of that type. I chose the Krogan shotgun on my Vanguard and it tears up enemies at close range. It was a much bigger upgrade considering how I play.

I'm not saying that unlocking a different weapon type is a bad idea, just pointing out that you shouldn't discount the "upgrade" for a weapon type you can already use. If you use the crap out of your sniper as an infiltrator, why get an assault rifle instead of a much better sniper rifle?
