I read somewhere that they are trying to do make ME3 as fast as they can before the new generation of consoles come. And hoping for Q4 2011 release ofc :D

I don't think that can be a primary consideration as this console generation is probably going to last longer than any before it.  The XBOX 360 and PS3 development costs were so expensive that I wouldn't expect to hear about new consoles until 2012 at the earliest with releases several years later.

Closest equivalent is probably the gap between Baldur's Gate 2 and Throne of Bhaal. ToB fell somewhere between an expansion pack and a full fledged game. But the principle is similar - continuation of an epic story, utilising the same game engine and focusing on completing the plot rather than any major technological advancement.

Throne of Bhaal came out 9 months after Baldur's Gate 2. Now I don't expect ME3's turnaround to be that quick, but I do think it demonstrates that when you take out and significant work on the game engine and technical side of things, it cuts a huge amount of time off the development.

I'd rather they take their time. And why would PC gamers need to lose their saves if they upgrade? There are things called memory sticks, portable hardrives or backup drives you know...

Not that it's impossible to transfer the save, just becomes easier and easier to overlook the longer the wait is.

You buy a new PC sometime towards the middle of 2011. When you're reinstalling stuff and transferring stuff, very easy to forget the save for a game you played 18 months ago.

Judging by ME2 and various 'sounds' that have come out from BW I get the feeling that ME3 has been in development for quite awhile already, as in an unusually early start in side-along development with ME2, so don't fret too much because by the time it's released, even if it ends up being 2011, they probably would've spent more time on it than you realise.

Think Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, though hopefully without the dip in quality :P

well i'm going to take a guess and say it won't be anywhere near the release of TOR. i realize its a different part of the company, but that is a lot of game, and i doubt bioware wants to compete with itself.

anyways im hoping they will shoot for about a year and a half from now, that is more then enough time to finish all the upgrades and create a compelling game without any tech upgrades.

Aye, I somehow lost my very first save of ME1 after getting a new computer. It turned out well anyway, though, because I needed to refresh my memory on everything. So I crammed in my "official" playthrough that week leading up to ME2's release. Story-wise it was great because I remembered absolutely everything that happened in the first game, but gameplay-wise it was very jarring having to learn a slightly different control-scheme and game mechanics.

Yeah, I'd agree. I assume that they've already largely written (at least in the grand scale) the whole ME2 and ME3 storyline. Presumably they've also moved some stuff out of ME2, possibly things that were already half developed, into ME3. And they're not updating the game engine.

So their tasks are;

Completion of area mapping, graphics work and cut scenes.
Story detail and completion.
Voice acting and sound effects.

None of them trivial tasks, but none of them absolutely huge scale either.

I'd just like to add... TOR is being developed in Austin, a completely different studio than where DA:O/ME are being developed(Edmonton) so they could easily be done at the same time. Also the first expansion to DA:O is coming out a whopping 5 months after the game itself so it doesn't seem too farfetched that it's possible for early 2011

All of the game mechanics and graphics are already there, all they need to do is make the story and render that into the game. I still think it will be a good 1 1/2 at teh least till it comes out. Id say something like November 2011 would be prime. Right before the holiday rush and amp up sales.

How much time they need to make ME3 depends on many factors.

If they use the same game engine, then it is possible for them to recycle all of the game assets used in ME2. By doing so they can easily cut down on their production time.

ME3 would still take at least 2 years to produce, but they won't have to waste time building everything from square one.

All I care is that ME3 is a two-disc Monster with even more content than ME2.

Irritatingly, by the time ME3 comes out I'll probably have emigrated from the UK to the US. Therefore I won't be able to use my UK Xbox, and will have no way of transferring my save game.

I'm surprised that Bioware hasn't taken into account this potential scenario and come up with a solution. :)

Once again, if anyone has information to actually support this January 2011 date, please provide it. Otherwise it is unreferenced Wikipedia BS.

ign put this out on their site. tba 2011.

Of course it could be *done* at the same time.  But Bio isn't going to *release* two mega SF franchise games -- the first of which is something they want to make the biggest game EVER -- within a few months of each other.

DA was finished for 6+ months before its release:  the rest of the time was in console ports and polish.  No similarity whatsoever (except of course for the inevitable PS3 release of ME1/2 before ME3 comes out).

How much influence will EA have on decisions like these? Surely they would want an established game franchise to sell more titles more often.

I remember EA have said, via Riccitiello himself, that they want to take a very hands off approch with Bioware. As they know when they start telling companies what to do things screw up for everyone (like Westwood).

I admit I can't be bothered going to get the quote but I read it in an interview done right after EA acquired them so if someone is curious enough it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I mean it makes a lot of sense. EA aren't stupid (anymore anyway) they know Bioware have been doing a great job without them and if they start telling them what to do it's going to affect the quality. No one wants another KOTOR 2 where the game has huge chunks missing from it (I know it's not a Bioware game or EA but it's a good example where a game has such obvious missed potential thanks to being put on a tight deadline).

As for Mass Effect 3 I personally hate the idea of waiting two years but I'm prepared to do it so that we all get the proper experience over a rushed ME3 that comes out in a year or so.

They can take as long as they need as long as the game comes out and is as, if not more, epic then when Half-Life 2 came out. Anyone who was into Half-Life knows how big that was.

That's what i'm thinking too. They probably hashed out a lot of the story while developing ME2.

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually recorded the ME3 dialogue at the same time as the ME2 stuff, and if they have then that would mean the script is completely done.

Most of the models are done, the general key-frame animations are already done, gameplay is done etc.

Alot of the framework for the game is already there from ME2's amazing success in these departments so there's purely the process of bringing it together in forms such as cinematography and the actual assembly of scenes....

The third game in the series is planned for a release date of Some time in 2011 Casey Hudson commented that Mass Effect 3 "will be easier because we don't have to worry about continuity into the next one."[4]This meant that the release would be earlier. January 2011 is when it is to be expected. Casey Hudson commented that "Mass Effect 3 will have no updates in graphics, so it will be released as soon as it has been created, expect same planets and characters." However, decisions will still be imported from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3, as to keep continuity within the series.[5] Casey also said in a interview at the Consumer Electronics Show that BioWare is already at work on Mass Effect 3.
[edit] Related games quote on wikipeida (could be wrong of course, but if its true it sounds like a dlc more then a game. i was really dissapointed to read that

why would you think that BW would be so stupid as to not create new planets or characters for ME3? That's just bad story telling and bad marketing.  I think we can rest easy that BW would not do something so fool hearty

When is the last time Bioware rush anything?

All they do is postpone and delay to insure quality of the game.

In Bioware we trust!

Trust is not given, it is earned.

They earned my trust by putting out 2 amazing games that i would pay 100$ for each.

uhh bioware, i am kidding. dont charge 100$ for ME3! >..<
