I have created a topic on this before.
I believe that Dragon Age and Mass Effect do take place in the same universe...sorta.
The fade from Dragon Age is actually a dimension to other realities as well. I think the collectors use the fade to take shortcuts through the galaxies which is what allows them to appear anywhere even without the Mass Effect relays.
I think what should happen is Alistair should get caught in the fade while fighting a Maleficar and then find himself in the Mass Effect universe.
Shepard should be able to find him and recruit him. Being that he doesn't use guns, he can be given a lightsaber. It would be so cool!
Now we are having some fun. Nice!
Lightsaber's, hmm, with the ability to reflect incoming rounds in different ways?

Yeah. I'm thinking that maybe the Collectors and the Darkspawn are linked somehow. As it turns out, the Darkspawn were not corrupted by the maker for entering the Dark City. Instead they are aliens indoctrinated by the reapers and were sent to extinguish life on Ferelden.
As such, they have a link with the Collectors and Alistair's Grey Warden powers also work against the Collectors.
In a future DLC, Commander Shepard can use Alistair to sense the hidden Collector base and they can team up to destroy the Collector overlord!
Alistair can become the first Grey Warden Spectre!

However, from the pointy eared perspective, I think the taint is an infection rather than a decision. Or, perhaps, a decision that led to an infection. Nevertheless, it is possible the resulting form of "Collector" may be completely independent from the individual characteristics of the original, pre-collectorized, host species (pronoun) etc. The end form on the chain is always a mimic, or representation, of the, in this case, Reapers. Where reaper signifies...
Careful....you're getting dangerously close to spoiler territory.
Seriously though, I think the collectors being allied with the Darkspawn makes perfect sense.
The Reapers could very well be transdimensional beings who use the fade to transport to other universes.

Why is this even a thread?
I'm sure Bioware will delete it since we've likely uncovered the content for Mass Effect 2's expansion pack.

Absolutely. Where Fade may be synonymous with worm hole, string, particle, etc. (Meager attempt to appease the Sci-Fi folks.)

Canonically? No, and if ever was revealed that the two took place in the same universe, it would only hurt both games. Dragon Age and Mass Effect both stand on their own perfectly well. Having an official "cross over" would just be a cheap attention-grab. Bioware's smarter than that.
Fun to think about. No reason to think it's anywhere close to true.
