The problem is I cannot import my ME1 character
I've already tried using ME2 configuration utility to copy ME1 save files but no success. I've also tried to simply copy and paste the files manually.
The save files are already there (C:\\Documents and Settings\\User\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ME1)
but when I start the game there is no characters in that "import screen" on new game.
Also, I can start a new game + on mass effect 1 so it should work.
Any ideas?

Try one of the two following methods:
Step 1: Launch Game
Step 2: Pick Configure and not Play.
Step 3: Once Scan has finished, on the left pick Save Games.
Step 4: Click Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games
Step 5: Pick where Mass Effect 1 Saved your games. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 6: Top menu click Mass Effect 2 and click Save Settings
Step 7: Click File and pick Exit.
Step 8: Click Play on Laucher
Step 9: Pick New Game
Step 10: Import ME1
If the list is empty you need to do it this way.
Step 1: Open your Mass Effect 1 save game folder default is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 2: Find the .MassEffectSave file you want (Do not copy the .MassEffectProfile file).
Step 3: Open the Mass Effect 2 Save game folder and you should see a folder called ME1. Paste the .MassEffectSave file into it. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect 2->Save->ME1
Step 4: Launch The Game
Step 5: Click Play on Launcher
Step 6: Pick New Game
Step 7: Import ME1
Note: Paths are for Windows 7.

You sure you copied the correct save file into your ME2/Save/ME1 folder?

there is no saved game files in my mass effect 1 though i´ve compleated it not long ago and still is able load my old games. Could this be because its installed on steam? (mass effect 2 is not installed on steam) any help apriciated.

Breno: odd. Looks like you have what's needed. I've no ideas at present.
Bjarkeba: shouldn't be an issue. I have ME1 on Steam and the retail version of ME2. I had no troubles importing my ME1 saves. Just to make sure we're covering the bases, your ME1 saves should be in (for Windows XP) My Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save.
To import into ME2, you have to run the configuration utility. Do this by starting the game and choosing Configure instead of Play. When the utility opens, choose Save Games. Click on the 'Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games' button. When the window pops up, navigate to your ME1 save folder. Choose that save folder and click on Okay. It will appear to do nothing, but it actually imports your save data into ME2. Close the utility and start the game. You should now be able to access your old characters.

Greedy, the files should go into your My Documents->BioWare-Mass Effect 2->Save->ME1 folder. (Or whatever the similar path would be if you're on Vista or 7).

With the steam version, to run the config thing, you have to go to your steam files. Under steamapps is a folder called "common" with the ME2 configuration thing.
C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2 then run the ME2 launcher from there and click "configure"

I can't find the save directory for ME1. Searching my character's names turned up nothing, and all I got from searching "save" in the ME1 folder was the GUI for saving games.

Mass Effect 1 saves are in the following location:
Documents>Bioware>Mass Effect>Save

I had the same problem. I could not import my character from ME1 to ME2 so I read couple suggestions and eventually found the easies and the fastest one.
STEPS:
1. Find location of ME1 and ME2 save folder
(I have ME1 save folder in C:\\Dokumenty\\BioWare\\Mass Effect and ME2 save folder in C:\\Dokumenty\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2)
2. Copy all files from ME1 save folder NOT FOLDER, but files to the sub-folder ME1 in ME2 save folder.
That all!!!
Then, launch the game, start new game and you can import the character/s from ME1.
Good luck!
