WHat if you don't own a copy of ME1 and are just trying to import a save from that mass effect saves website?

I am also having a problem importing the files. I clicked the Configure button and located the ME1 folder in Mass Effect 2 (under My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect 2). When I click the button after locating the file, nothing happens, and whenever I enter the game it tells me no saved games were found and that I need to use the saved games config. So freaking annoying and counterintuitive. Anyone got any help to offer? Or are we stuck here. -_-

That's ME2's folder, you're just pointing it to where it wants to copy the files.

It wants to know the original source, which is Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save

I bought Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 from the EA online store. I am having trouble importing a save into a ME1 save into ME2 as well. I finished playing ME1 a day ago but when I look in the ME1 folder there are no saved games.

EDIT: I looked in My Dcouments and I found Bioware/Mass Effect/ Save. When I try to open the folder througn the ME2 Config Utility it does not open it.

The config tool won't open anything when you do that, but if it works your imports should show up in ME2.

If that's not working, try moving them manually as described in the FAQ.

Just sorted it out for myself, like many here no utility is available (ME1 and ME2 both installed on steam) so simply went to ME1 Save directory in MyDocuments etc., then created SaveME1 in ME2 directory in MyDocuments, and copied my save game file there (that will be the one created by the game after you finish ME1). Then the profile is available when choosing "import ME1" character in ME2. Hope this helps!

did not work i tried it but no luck

In the Steam or install ME2 folder there should be an config utility .exe access to allow you to run the utility directly instead of running from the disk version splash screen. Once you get access to the utility you can then import from your me1.

steamapps\\common\\mass effect2\\Binaries

^ may be the location, but since I don't have steam version I can't check, but another poster indicated this is correct location for ME apps in steam.

I also cannot import my me1 saves into me2. I have done all the previously suggested steps and nothing works. There is something missing here and even the Bioware people cannot explain it.

I will watch this thread in case anybody who is having the problem figures out a way to make it work..

I assume you have finished ME1? If not, thats the problem, as it will only recognise the savegames with the "finished game" flag.
Whats the format of the file name?
Char_01-50-1-3-0-13-5-2011-38-42.MassEffectSave
or
John01_02.MassEffectSave

The first is an example if a finished ME1 savegame, the second is a standard ME1 savegame. The first example is the format you need to be able to import.

Do import characters not carry over their level to ME2? I managed to import the character from ME1 to ME2 however the character started at level 2ish instead of 44.

No, they dont. Levels and skills have been revamped in ME2. The higher your level you finished with in ME1 does give you a bonus to your starting level in ME2 though.

Seeing as you have just admitted to pirating the first ME game, do you honestly expect anyone to answer your question given that your havent registered ME2 on these forums?
Register it so we know we are dealing with someone who is at least contributing to the continuation of gaming development, and we'll answer.
Forum registration here:

Otherwise, sod off.

Try one of the two following methods:

Step 1: Launch Game
Step 2: Pick Configure and not Play.
Step 3: Once Scan has finished, on the left pick Save Games.
Step 4: Click Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games
Step 2: Find the .MassEffectSave file you want (Do not copy the .MassEffectProfile file).
I bought both Mass effects through Steam and the second method (copying saved files from my documents) worked like a charm! Just bought it up now.. I have played it through with the default method selected (no Wrex and council dead) so I am looking forward to seeing the differences :D

Only reason I can think that it doesn't work for some is because they don't have a legit copy!

Its available for all versions of the game. I'm guessing that you have the Steam version, since that is the only version which hides the config utility. In this case, you will have to search for a file called masseffect2config.exe, and then run it.
