I am also having a problem importing the files. I clicked the Configure button and located the ME1 folder in Mass Effect 2 (under My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect 2).
That's ME2's folder, you're just pointing it to where it wants to copy the files.
It wants to know the original source, which is Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save

EDIT: I looked in My Dcouments and I found Bioware/Mass Effect/ Save. When I try to open the folder througn the ME2 Config Utility it does not open it.

If that's not working, try moving them manually as described in the FAQ.

did not work i tried it but no luckV. Doomski wrote...
Just sorted it out for myself, like many here no utility is available (ME1 and ME2 both installed on steam) so simply went to ME1 Save directory in MyDocuments etc., then created SaveME1 in ME2 directory in MyDocuments, and copied my save game file there (that will be the one created by the game after you finish ME1). Then the profile is available when choosing "import ME1" character in ME2. Hope this helps!

steamapps\\common\\mass effect2\\Binaries
^ may be the location, but since I don't have steam version I can't check, but another poster indicated this is correct location for ME apps in steam.

Whats the format of the file name?
Char_01-50-1-3-0-13-5-2011-38-42.MassEffectSave
or
John01_02.MassEffectSave
The first is an example if a finished ME1 savegame, the second is a standard ME1 savegame. The first example is the format you need to be able to import.

Try one of the two following methods:

Step 1: Launch Game
Step 2: Pick Configure and not Play.
Step 3: Once Scan has finished, on the left pick Save Games.
Step 4: Click Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games
Step 5: Pick where Mass Effect 1 Saved your games. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 6: Top menu click Mass Effect 2 and click Save Settings
Step 7: Click File and pick Exit.
Step 8: Click Play on Laucher
Step 9: Pick New Game
Step 10: Import ME1

If the list is empty you need to do it this way.

Step 1: Open your Mass Effect 1 save game folder default is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 2: Find the .MassEffectSave file you want (Do not copy the .MassEffectProfile file).
Step 3: Open the Mass Effect 2 Save game folder and you should see a folder called ME1. Paste the .MassEffectSave file into it. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect 2->Save->ME1
Step 4: Launch The Game
Step 5: Click Play on Launcher
Step 6: Pick New Game
Only reason I can think that it doesn't work for some is because they don't have a legit copy!
