I assume you have finished ME1? If not, thats the problem, as it will only recognise the savegames with the "finished game" flag.
Whats the format of the file name?
Char_01-50-1-3-0-13-5-2011-38-42.MassEffectSave
or
John01_02.MassEffectSave

The first is an example if a finished ME1 savegame, the second is a standard ME1 savegame. The first example is the format you need to be able to import.

This might be stupid, but how do I get the "finished game" save?

I have played Mass Effect through three times before and imported those saves to ME2 with no problem. But now after finishing the game the fourth time the game didn't generate save file like that. My last save is an autosave, the last save I manually did was before the final confrontation with Saren.

// Loaded from the autosave on another computer and played through the game again. It solved my problem. Never mind me.

I was having the same problems as you guys where even copying a save game to the ME2 saves folder wasn't working but found out that you have to copy ALL the files in C:\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save to a new folder titled ME1 in C:\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save . tried that and it worked, hope this helps!

Try one of the two following methods:

Step 1: Launch Game
Step 2: Pick Configure and not Play.
Step 3: Once Scan has finished, on the left pick Save Games.
Step 4: Click Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games
Step 5: Pick where Mass Effect 1 Saved your games. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 6: Top menu click Mass Effect 2 and click Save Settings
Step 7: Click File and pick Exit.
Step 8: Click Play on Laucher
Step 9: Pick New Game
Step 10: Import ME1

If the list is empty you need to do it this way.

Step 1: Open your Mass Effect 1 save game folder default is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect->Save
Step 2: Find the .MassEffectSave file you want (Do not copy the .MassEffectProfile file).
Step 3: Open the Mass Effect 2 Save game folder and you should see a folder called ME1. Paste the .MassEffectSave file into it. Default for win 7 is C:Users->(Username)->Documents->BioWare->Mass Effect 2->Save->ME1
Step 4: Launch The Game
Step 5: Click Play on Launcher
Step 6: Pick New Game
Step 7: Import ME1

Note: Paths are for Windows 7.
Thank you. Worked perfectly.

I'm having trouble as well. I have a new laptop in which I've never played through mass effect 1. I loaded it once but haven't finished it on this computer. I downloaded the save game from a website, but it was not the format of a finished game. Does my computer have to have a record of me finishing the game in order to import anything?

Okay I have figured out the problem that I, and other users were having. I was copying the file with the character name, instead of the Char_01-50-1-3-0-13-5-2011-38-42.MassEffectSave type file name.

Not sure if this will help others and I'm pretty sure I didn't see this one point...

We too were having problems following the previously suggested steps. The issue we had was we did not see a ME1 folder in the Mass Effect 2>Save folder. We created the ME1 folder and copied the ME1 character save files to it. We were then able to import the ME1 character in Mass Effect 2.

Thanks to everyone for your input getting to this important step. We would have never gotten it on our own.

Don't think I ever did this. Have a folder there but pretty sure I didn't manually put it there myself. I'd always assumed the ME2 configuration utility created it when I imported the ME1 saves.
