She's too crazy and spiteful. I realize she's had a hard past but she deliberately getting into trouble didn't help her situation. As you can imagine, most people haven't had her level of distress nor are they so aggressive and chaotic. So that is one thing most people probably won't relate to. She needs to prove to herself and others that she has both endured the worst and is the strongest for it.
When you talk to her, she assumes that you want to have sex with her. I suppose it makes sense in context of her character, but it was off putting for me.
The thing is, I know somebody who was physically and sexually abused as a child who basically became a non-murderous version of Jack. Mohawk, tats, piercings, overly promiscuous, vulgar, steals, vandalizes, has been arrested, substance abuse problems, etc. Actively tries to push people away by insulting new people she meets with the rationalization that if they can't get past the surface they don't deserve to know her anyway. I'm friends with her current (and only REAL) boyfriend and both of us have gotten past that and she's a really nice caring person. I didn't learn about the abuse until recently, but it makes sense and well ... in that light, jack makes sense.
Similarly just trying to get into her pants gets you on the "I'll f you but not get involved with you" place with her. My friend? He resisted and got her respect because of it... so a lot of this rings true for me.

As a personal preference for attraction I wholly understand, as attraction can be fickle. As a way to judge a persons worth however, I think that is an incredibly shallow judgement, having known both very professional and well educated people with body art (I myself do not have any as I don't have much I want to get carved into my flesh) who are not only responsible in their professional life but are responsible wives, husbands, mothers, and fathers. As far as younger people most I know are well adjusted, and are just as likely to be good/bad people as those who do not. *shrug*
Yeah, I'm actually rather disappointed in myself for making that value judgment... but if I'm being brutally honest, it is definitely there. I would absolutely defend anyone's right to adorn themselves in any way they see fit... but I still wouldn't date a woman with tattoos.
It goes beyond the aesthetic for me.. I guess I've seen too many people go through the process of having "body art" removed or repaired.
Google "tooth to tattoo ratio" and you'll see a lot of empirical evidence stacked up out there against getting "inked."
I'm not above admitting that I'm far from perfect and can be a judgemental pr1ck.
I suppose it might be where I live compared to where you might live. Where I live (sf east bay) most people with extensive tattoing are punks, scene-ish metal heads, or goth. The "to tooth ratio" doesn't kick in. I'm not talking redneck/gangster tats.

Y'know, I don't blame anyone for not liking Jack. That's fine. But really, you're missing out, even if her lines and mannerisms come off as heavy handed. No one enjoys being treated like that in real life or otherwise, but I don't think it'd kill anyone to try to understand what makes each of their characters tick.
Some of us went as far as analyzing her tattoos. On her left arm there are three faces that depict Jack at different stages in her life. She used to have long hair and was quite attractive until she began shaving her head, adding tattoos, and heavy makeup.
So much crap has happened to her - the experimenting, the rape, and so on - that she intentionally pushes people away and [I think] would go so far as to make herself look unattractive just so she could be left alone.
Because that's what she believes she wants.
If she wasn't fighting or causing mayhem with her biotics, then what was the point in her even having so much power pummeled into her? Fighting gives her purpose, it's what she was made for, and she didn't have much opportunity to see otherwise. She's obviously tried to find places where she could belong like cults, gangs, outlaw colonies. She realized too late someone had loved her enough to want to build a home with her when he sacrificed his life to save hers.
I mean, hell, is it so hard to empathize with her a little?
Miranda's argument with Jack annoyed me because even if she's correct in the fact each Cerberus cell is separate from the rest, she couldn't even find it in herself to see how even the Illusive Man couldn't control everything that goes on in his organization. And as a small part in his grand vision, she couldn't feel a sense of responsibility for the sacrifices Cerberus makes towards their goal.
And worse, she called Jack a mistake. That's as bad as the Salarians viewing the Krogan as a scourge upon the universe while denying the fact they made them who the Krogan are now.
---
Other than that, has anyone noticed how much more kissing Jack actually does over the rest of the LIs? Unlike the rest who come to Shepard to get boned, she goes in and settles for cuddling! In her experience, sex was a means to an end, she'd rather not play around with someone who takes her seriously.
I never thought to check out the tattoes themselves... I think I'll have to now, the 3 faces sounds interesting.

No, I'm pretty much equal opportunity when it comes to hating tattoos. I worked in the music industry for years and I feel the same disdain whether I see a tattoo on an inmate or a rock star.
I'm a purist about a lot of things... never eat fast food, and I recently got my cable turned off because I realized I hadn't seen anything worth watching in 6 months.
You also need to realize that NEVER let this "visceral" reaction affect the way I interact with people... I'd go out of my way to help someone inked from head to toe... I would just be internally aesthetically bothered... probably the same way I'd be if a person hadn't had a shower in a few days : )

I'm not talking as a romance option, I mean as a character. As a character Jack is probably the most "realistic" of the crew members. Her background is extremely well done, as is the voice work, facial modeling (reactions etc), and how she responds to things. She's also one of the few characters to stick to her guns throughout and not have some massive change of heart. You can get her to trust Shepard and relax a bit on the homocidal tendencies, but the way she feels about certain people and Cerberus in general stays true. You can generally predict how she will react to various actions throughout. Anything that promotes individuality for her is good (she doesn't like the idea of the Geth being brainwashed, for example) and hates to see the guilty go free, especially if they wronged her personally...
Then again, she WAS a pirate... but you don't really hear specifics on how she acted as a pirate, only that once she figured out that she would be betrayed, she can be quick to violence.
This. I loved Jack as a character. She was great and you just voiced all of the reasons I thought so. I also wonder why all the Miranda-hate. I think both are caused by people not getting to know them first.

If the writers really wanted to play up the "psychopath" aspect of Jack's personality, they could've went with the Hannibal Lecter approach where she's come to terms with what she's become and whatever glimpse we saw of the scared little girl was already dead. And given her less colourful dialogue and more significantly creepier dialogue.
Personally I think the real psychopath of Mass Effect 2 is Morinth.
Then she would be a completely different character, and not nearly as cool.
