I've got an old xbox 360 (think it's a Zephyr... older than the Falcon), works fine, but is terribly noisy, no RROD issues. Don't tell me to install games to the HD, I do that already. Don't tell me to keep it ventilated, raised, whatever... I do that too. I'm not going to use headphones or just turn up the volume. I've got it all hooked up to a decent 5.1 audio system, and the whirrrr... whirrrr... noise is getting on my nerves.

What I really want, is for the console to to not drown out some of those quieter moments in games like DA:O and ME2.

I assume something will come out this fall, but there isn't real news that it'll be anything different (better?) than what's out now. I've got a $200 to burn, and am considering an Arcade since I have a HD and everything already.

What do you think... is this upgrade worth it? Would the noise really be less than what I've got, or would I just be wasting my money?

I think Microsoft is soon planning a new console release... At least wait until mid-summer, jken97. If no news of any new console comes out, then proceed with replacement.

At the Natal keynote, they said no plans for a new console. Though elsewhere, there's news about an upgraded "Valhalla" chipset planned for Fall... Which is almost a year of whirr... whirr... To put up with. I'll take your recommendation though.

To push the question, is a new Arcade significantly quieter than an old Zephyr or Falcon box?

the arcade model will be as quite as any other model.. they all have the same 2 little fans..

If Microsoft, douse come out with a new 360 already, I do hope their smart enough to not put the DVDROM right top of the freaking GPU so it gets no air..really its so Polly designed. But guess that would be why they have to make a new one already.

I did a site by side with mine and a PS3 Slim a while ago... the PS3 is silent in comparison even w/o playing games off the HD. Bummer though, I like all my xbox 360 stuff except for the hardware noise. All that win, with such an easy to fix fail bringing it down.

My Resident Evil 5 Xbox 360 (Red one) doesn't make a sound.. But ya you can't find them anywhere anymore beside ebay or w/e. Even the power pack is alot little then the elite/normal it also has vent holes in it so it doesn't heat up as fast.

What are the numbers on the back of your RE5 xbox, by the video ports? Mine says 16,5A; 5v... I hear that the latest ones, the Jaspers, 12,1A; 5v, and there's a version in between mine and the latest.

nm, I researched it. The RE5 xbox is a Jasper. You say it's silent... Compared to what? Are all Jasper really quiet?

I recently(A month ago) bought an Arcade myself after my "nearly" launch console(I pre-ordered a console, but I had to wait before the place got more stock in, so i got it a month after launch) RROD after 4 years, meaning it was out of RROD warrenty. Was £80 to repair, or £110 for a new console with the new quieter chip, I think it's safe to guess what I chose. Eitherway I can honestly say it's much quieter. It's still pretty loud when playing off a disk as expected, but it's nearly silent if you play off the hard disk.

It really depends on whether the noise annoys you enough to warrent paying the money for an arcade console.

thanks for all the suggestions... I went ahead and got an Arcade, noise was driving me crazy. I'd say that if a PS3 is a 1 and the launch xbox 360 is a 10, the Arcade (rather, any xbox with the jasper chip, I'd imagine) is probably a 4.

Probably a waste of money, but at least I can hear the game w/o blasting the audio.
