The first Mass Effect was one of my favorite games of all time. In Mass Effect 2 many things were improved upon/done better and in many ways I do consider it to be a superior game, but there are a couple thoughts I'd like to share.
Characterization was vastly improved from the first, in many ways the strength of the plot was tied to your pary members and I found all of the party members to be very well done (Jacob was a tad generic, but his loyalty mission was good).
That being said, there's two areas I'd like to touch on that haven't come up (and no, scanning isn't one of them)
Side quests- Cleaned up tremendously, the lack of driving up a sheer wall of rock was nice, but I couldn't help but feel that they lacked a certain personality the first had. While the environments/nature of the quests were more varried they more or less seperated themselves into either "kill everything on this planet" or "navigate this puzzle". In the first game side quests always had an element of dialogue to them, talking down Major Kyle (or killing everyone), negotiating with the biotic terrorists, dealing with corporal toombs. I feel like killing a planet full of mercs is not something I'd necessarily want to do on my third replay unless there was a decision to be made at the end. I know there were quests like this, but they overwhelmingly felt like running around empty dungeons shooting things/ puzzle solving without any real personality to them. I liked negotiating with terrorists (or not negotiating with terrorists) and I feel that while the sidequests were more diverse missions; they didn't have individual stories to them in the way the one in the first did. Bioware is my favorite developper due to their comittment to storytelling, I just wish that storytelling would have extended to the sidequests (planet scanning ones) a bit more.
That being said, many of the ones on the citadel/omega/illium followed this model and were more enjoyable.
The other thing I wouldn't mind, is a bit more depth to the availabe weapons/armours. While I recognize that in ME one there were many clones and ME2 in fact has more unique weapons, I feel like in ME3 more can be done in terms of different armour types to collect, as well as the ability to modify your weapons a bit more. Buying damage upgrades is infinitely better then buying clones of the same gun, but buying modifications to effect rate of fire/clip size/accuracy that allow you to fully modify your weapons would be interesting. It is an RPG after all, and while the new combat is wonderful, some form of inventory system (not necessarily the one from ME1, but something) and increased importance on acquiring credits and buying things from shops would be nice. I feel like if I did enough mining I would have to do little to no shopping, and I personally feel like going out, earning credits and then laying some hard earned credits down on a new toy is one of the key elements of an RPG.
The only other thing (I know, I said two and will probably get a tl;dr from most) is that I sort of wish the collectors appeared more throughout the plot. Perhaps in some of the recruitment missions. Constantly interacting with Sarren throughout the first gave you a clear enemy and a sense of tension. You felt like you were at war with the geth and working to shut Sarren down at all turns, everything progressed along a storyline that really felt like a race. This feeling is somewhat absent from the second, you don't fight the collectors very often, and few missions are dedicated to trying to sabatoge collector efforts within the galaxy. That being said, the suicide mission was a brilliant piece of gaming that carried with it a tone and a tension that I wish could have appeared more in the rest of the game. During the suicide mission you feel like you're at war with the collectors, and you're racing to stop them. Perhaps in ME3 whoever the enemy is, it would be nice to be fighting them on a more consistent basis and trying to shut down their operations (i.e. like Ferros/Virmire/Noveria) as well as building your team. Having a consistent enemy that your team is running into conflict with at every turn is just a personal preference. It's not knocking the collector enemies though, the storyline moments concerning them were great, i just wish I saw them more.
I hope I don't come across as bashing or hating on the game, it's one of my favorites and the steps forwards it takes in regards to games as a storytelling medium are wonderful, these are just personal preferences for ME3. So many things were improved upon in ME2 it's not even funny, and many of them based on feedback from fans, so this is just my contribution. To end on a positive note, cleaning up the messy inventory/less mako/improved characterization/the suicide mission/ the attention payed to breathing life into the universe all go above and beyond, and my suggestions are just those. Still one of my top five games (hard to rank them past that point).
Some thoughts concerning ME2(No spoilers...I hope)
