So you're saying everyone with IE8 experiences this? I mean, to me it seems I can run this site both in compability mode and without, but it's still the same problem with the text.

tl;dr: yes.

The way I understand it:
It's a little complicated. To bridge the switch from the we-don't-care-about-standards attitude of IE6 (and less so IE7) to the (almost) standards compliant IE8, IE8 featers the "compatibility mode" you're already familiar with. However, most only know about the broken page icon to right in the address bar -- there's more to it than that. IE8 is also able to render a site using the IE7 engine, and on top of that it will try to identify which version the site is coded for. It means you can actually run the browser three different ways and the specific page three different ways. This site causes the browser to enter compatibility mode automatically because each page is treated as being IE7 compliant (which is not IE8 compliant). So, even if you think you're running in IE8 mode, because you didn't click the broken page icon (I'm guessing it's not even available to you on this site), you may very well not be.

To run IE8 in IE8 mode, bring up the built-in Developer Tools window with F12 and change the browser and document (to the right on the menu bar) to IE8 and IE8-standards, respectively. If you refresh (you may need to press Ctrl+F5 to clear the cache) it should render post widths (and a number of other cosmetical issues) correctly. As I said, I'm currently running IE8 compatibility with IE7-standards because IE8 mode is causing the site to lag.

And I'm not sure I understood you, but could I fix this somehow now? If so, how? (Got no idea where the .SEPForumTextOutput thing is).
Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Yes and no. Not permanently, but you can change the way IE8 renders the current page. For this specific issue:

  • Open Developer Tools (F12).
  • Select the CSS tab.
  • From the drop-down under the CSS tab, select the second option (they're called the same but are different).
  • In the top right of the window, search for
    .SEPForumTextOutput
  • Right click the purple rule that (only!) reads
    .SEPForumTextOutput
and add a new attribute. This will add a text field below the other attributes for that rule.
  • In the text field, type
    width:96.8%
and press Enter. The browser will take a short while to update but then all posts on that page will be rendered correctly.
Any and all such changes disappear when you refresh the browser (so you won't break anything but it also won't stick). It can be useful for long texts, especially if there are many such on the same page, but often it's just too much work to be worth it.

[Edit]
Looks like list tags are also broken.

You, Sir Snoteye, are a saint!

You were indeed right that my 'Broken Page' icon is not displayed when on this site like it does on others. I opened the Dev Tools and changed to IE8 standards for documents. Page refreshed automatically and text is now displaying correctly!

This is soooo much better.

Not noticing any lag so far, but if something comes up I guess I'll just end up changing web browser. Doubt I will edit the CSS every time just to view a page correctly once.

But is there any way I can make it default to IE8 standards for documents? Every time I close the browser and reopen it, it's reverted back to IE7 for documents.

And finally, a curiousity on my part, is it possible that this site is somehow bugged and it might be fixed eventually? Or is IE8 simply faulty? (Firefox seems more and more tempting by the minute...)

Again, thanks a lot for your help. =]

No, I just don't have anything better to do. Image IPB

Try using auto-scroll (default option when pressing the mouse wheel) on long forum threads or the recent activity page. That's where it's worst for me.

No. It's specifically coded into the HTML that the pages should be treated as IE7 documents. People -- unfortunately -- are very slow to upgrade their browsers, and some outright refuse to. According to W3School's browser statistics, IE8 (which was released March this year and has been available in beta since a prior to that) only just overtook IE6. Thankfully, IE6 is slowly being forced out of the market just for being such a poor browser (here's for hoping the next version will do the same to IE7).

The site is still very buggy -- it's just a beta. However, it's mostly functional and the majority of bugs are purely cosmetic in nature (and I hear Firefox has some as well). I'm positive that eventually it will look fine, but eventually might be a month or two (or more) away. Firefox, simply by not supporting (or needing) all of IE8's compatibility funkiness, probably handles the site better than any vesion of IE right now.
