**chop** My point is that there is no logical basis for stating that the musical values of the late 19th Century are the only viable approach to a fantasy setting, as that fantasy world is A) based in a pseudo-medieval setting (which means that 19th Century orchestras don't exist in that world, just as they couldn't have existed in the middle ages) and B) regardless of its real world inspirations is NOT part of our world, and therefore can be represented by just about ANY musical form (if 19th Century Symphony Orchestras are not a non sequitur, then pretty much nothing is).

The reason that we prefer that 'epic' orchestral sound is that we have been conditioned to do so all our lives; it is not inherent in the setting or the music.

Very true, if they would really go with medieval music it would be pretty limited to lute, recorder etc and sweeping orchestral scores wouldn't be accurate at all. I guess it's because of what we are used to, but it is an interesting phenomenon.

Though I think another factor is that classical music in the style of movie scores or even in the style of Brahms or Tjajkovskij feel much more timeless than modern music. Rock, hiphop, house etc would take away lot of the feeling IMO, though in JRPG's I think it usually doesn't, might be because of the over-the-top anime style that most JRPG's have. They also tend to mix fantasy and sci-fi a lot.

I don't care... just so long as it 'feels right' for the game. Hell, if someone made a funky hip-hop medieval universe and makes it work... I'm all for it.

Personally, part of what makes RPGs boring for me these days is that they lack distinct personality. Dragon Age was a breath of fresh air in terms of setting a more mature and dark tone. The Warcraft Universe also has a distinct feel and look that makes it work. If they make a universe with metal music, hip-hop or barney songs... I just hope it blends well with an original feel.

I think Akira Yamaoka's music in the Silent Hill series is a brilliant use of sound to heighten the experience. He also knew when not to use music. The combination was unnervingly effective.

Somebody needs to make a game with folk and/or folk metal music. That would be incredible, if done right.
Imagine this playing in a midst of an epic battle. www.youtube.com/watch Without vocals though.

Seriously, there is huge potential if someone can do it right.
