What makes Jack so compelling for me personally is how she ties in to a lot of the themes of the games. It goes back to what Mordin was saying about his nephew and how hard it was to contemplate the galaxy, let alone save it. Which is why he used his nephew to serve as an example of the best and brightest the galaxy had to offer and made him fight that much harder. He can't anthropomorphize the galaxy, but he can look forward to seeing his favorite nephew again.
Jack serves the same purpose for Shepard in a way no sidequest could hope to fulfill, should the player decide it to be so. When we first meet her, Jack is indicative of most of the things a Paragon Shepard would try to stop, both in her demeanor and in her past. Both man's inhumanity to man and the callous winds of an essentially Chaotic Neutral fate. And weaving your way past her layers of defense mechanisms can create a sense of the good you're doing on a miniature scale. You can't anthropomorphize the galaxy, but you can show essential human decency to a poor girl whom the universe wadded up and threw away.
Or, inversely, you can harden her up and confirm her notions that life is cold and cruel and full of people who want to use you. The genius here is that she can develop either way. I think the reason BioWare tried so hard to sell us on her (leading to the fans turning on her like hungry dogs) is because she is going to be the major indicator of the choices you make throughout the rest of the series. Which is why all the hate (which I understand, even if I don't condone it) seems like calling the game at halftime. She's not done developing yet.
So yeah. Bumped and signed... And this is my first post on this forum, sorry if I broke any rules I wasn't supposed to.
well said. i hope you're right in that she's going to play a major role in the future.

Thank you very much. I guess I'm a little more confident than most that Jack will be in ME3 because even though a lot of folks may not like her, even her some of her strongest detractors will admit that Jack's romance writing is quite strong. None of the romance options are greater or lesser than any of the others, but rather fit in to a wide variety of gamers' intent on how they want their story to play out. You want stability and boot-knockin'? You have Miranda and Jacob. You want awkward cuteness? You have Garrus and Tali. You want to feel like you made a difference? You have Thane and Jack.
Bioware knew those who liked Jack were gonna REALLY like her. It's a brave artistic impulse, risking a thousand people not liking her so a hundred people would love her. So she's coming back.
Plus, cutting someone off at the legs before they have time to grow? This is BioWare. Not NBC.

"Get the **** out!"
But... I want to be friends
Jack is a great character. I love how you really feel like you get to know her, and the way she opens up little by little, but I hoped I could have a little more options. You are inevitably forced into the LI path if you talk to her. I know it's not in her character to accept friendship, but I can't understand why should Shepard be "acting interested" when all he's doing is talking.
So uhm a great character who definitely deserved some more dialogue lines.

JACK: Lot of money on Illium. Soft people make great victims...
JACOB: Jack, no!
JACK: What? I'm just thinking aloud...

Heh, I've never heard that one with Jacob around. Have to try that sometime.
I fell in love with her during Miranda's loyalty mission. "I like her. Are we still recruiting?" had me laughing for almost a minute afterward.

My own personal favorite is if you take her and Tali to deal with that racist Volus on the Citadel. You know, the one who thinks the quarian stole his credit chit?
TALI: My head agrees with you. My gut says I should jack his suit's olfactory sensors so everything smells like refuse.
JACK (fed up): Just kick his ass!

I liked her more before I found out how damaged she was.
As I said somewhere else she'd have been sexier with better pants. And I don't care how flat she thinks she is, she's going to regret the lack of support in the future.
Also, I was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED in the power downgrade once she joining my team versus the cut scenes.
