Warp Ammo is nice, but I think if Jack is going to get up all in your face, she really should practice using Barrier. Limitation of the game mechanics in ME2 perhaps, but really, if you're a Biotic, why wouldn't you know how to use Barrier?

Yes, that's a non sequitur.

I would prefer singularity over barrier. Draw them in, warp ammo on, and shotgun time!

While I like to use singularity, I grew to despise giving Liara the ability in ME1. She always managed to throw a singularity at the worst strategic moment.

I was just thinking if Jack was going to be CQC-- no wait, I was going to say she'd want to protect herself from the inevitable damage. But this is Jack. She's crazy. She doesn't have time for defense.

As probably one of Jack's ancestors said:" The best defence is a good offence"

I remember the first time I took Liara along to the big showdown with Saren... usually I just took Wrex and Garrus and hammered ZombieRoboFrogSaren down with superior firepower alone. Suddenly the SOB isn't hopping about but just floating there so we can let rip and spam his ass with grenades.

I knew she was there for something other than tapping dat, as the young men like to say these days ;)

It is a shame Jack's so fond of breaking cover... usually I can bail her ass out before she goes down, and it is in-character, but it's more annoying than her blowing my sniper shots with a Shockwave :D

Oh yes, I had a playthrough where I was an Adept and took Kaidan and Liara along for the final confrontation. Saren never hit the ground.

I think there should have been a way to tell any squadmate to get into the first cover available, rather than having to purposely tell them where to cover. I mean, telling them where to go is helpful in some situations, too, but sometimes Shepard is too busy covering his own ass to wonder why his squadmates can't do the same. If I switched Jack to pistols, she was a little less suicidal about it, but then she just didn't look right.

And incase you didn't notice, This is a JACK support thread, not a support thread.  Why would someone who loves say Legion (Just to mix it up) come in this thread and start making posts about how awesome Legion is?

Did you read what I wrote?  Let me reitterate:

I was suggesting that people are more inclined to like a character, or
at least to want to join your discussion, if they don't feel like
they're being insulted for liking another character.

I was not coming in here to make posts about how awesome Tali is.  I was coming in here to say how much I like Jack, and maybe participate in a little discussion about her.  However, on the very first page, I read at least a couple of posts that made me feel like the community I was trying to support thought I was a shallow, insipid moron for not being primarily a fan of Jack.  Excuse me for taking offense.

None of us here are going to insult anyone for liking different characters, but when you come to a Jack support thread expect to see a lot of fans supporting who..? Jack.

That isn't what I was complaining about, though.  Of course I expected to see Jack support in Jack's support thread.  I was complaining about a post that, I felt, was indulging in self-promotion at the expense of everyone else -- and I mean of the fans themselves, not the characters.

I am a fan of civil discourse, and I feel like more constructive engagements happen if one party doesn't feel insulted simply by participating, so I let my feelings be known: that I wanted to support Jack, but that making those sorts of statements is both uncalled for, and keeps potential contributors from wanting to participate in your thread because they feel unwelcome.

In response I got about 20% reasonable posts (thank you Bobby and Mondo), and 80% "Oh yeah?  Well we're right and screw off".

Anyway, I think I've covered all the responses.
Adieu.

I wish there was a way to hide posts here.  Through a mod or Firefox add-on.  Now that I think about it, this is probably the first time I've wanted to see a 4chan feature on another website, instead of the other way around.  I guess the best we can do is to scroll them right off the page with other posts.

Seriously? Liara is useful against Saren? Im going to try that. Most of the time with me, she was grounded due to biotic spamming. my standard ME1 crew was Wrex and Garrus, sometimes Wrex and Ash. I believe in firepower^^

Same in ME2, I mostly take a squad with me with no biotic abilities. Mostly Zaeed and Grunt. Sometimes Garrus and Mordin, or Legion. Those biotics interfere with the perfect snipershots Im lining up. And if youre carrying a Widow, you dont want to waste bullets. I love Jack, but unless I know there is some crowd control coming, she usually stays behind.^^

Thankfully, there are a lot of missions with crowd control aka husks

Because this is the BioWare Social Network.  I don't see any problem with people coming here to socialize.

Ya and the thread in which the Tali fan thread is located is in the 'Mass Effect' section. Not the 'I'm going to bed g'night everyone' section.

More civilly?  Frankly I think that is better than the sorts of personal insults that Tali fans hear all the time, like "I would like Tali if her fans didn't suck so much".

Ha I knew you were going to say that. And it's total bullcrap because no one else acts civil when they're favorite character gets insulted. I guess Jack fans just have to bend over and take it? No thanks.

Because I didn't write the thread title.  One person did, one person who does not represent every Tali fan.

That's great that you don't post for that reason. But the same can't be said for most Talimancers. The sole reason the Tali fan thread exists is because of concern over her not being in ME3.

No, and as I have said before, the thread is a chatroom.  As a percentage of the number of pages in the thread, I grant you -- the amount of in-depth discussion is much smaller than here.  If you go at any given time and just skim a few pages, you're right, you won't find much.  It is a thread for people who like socializing and who are there often.  If you do, you will find that good exchanges do happen, and fairly frequently.  Trying to parse over 5000 pages to sift for it is an exercise in futility, though.  You have to be there when it happens, and in order for that to happen, you probably need to spend some time there.  I don't blame you if you don't want to do that, but don't act as if you know all about what goes on there just because you dip in and skim a few pages every once in a while.

I am not going to waste an entire day to try and scrounge up some evidence of substance in that thread. Bobby already tried and we all know how that went. It's pretty bad that meaningful conversations in the Tali fan thread are like comets. You have to be at the right place at the right time to see it. You sure as hell don't have to here.

That's funny that you say that because that is exactly what was being done when I first posted last night.

That's so untrue and you know it. The reason you are getting flamed is because you called us elitist and tried to tell us that we should never say anything bad about other characters when Talimancers are notorious for ripping on other characters, especially Jack.

I find that idea hilarious.  Do you also stop liking bands when they get popular? Letting other people dictate your tastes is pretty wishy-washy.  I like characters based on their own merits, not the merits of their fans.

As I previously mentioned, it isn't a result of the number of fans the character has picked up, but rather how they comport themselves (often in the name of the character they champion across the forum). I've never previously had the misfortune of having my tastes overlap with that of a group whose actions garnered such bad publicity, as it were, so it's new ground for me.

Is it necessarily rational? No.

Does it have any relevance to the forum? No, considering it doesn't affect anyone other than myself, and I don't actively antagonize anyone because of it.

You can tell Jack never wanted to become what she is.  She wanted to be that normal little girl.  But instead years of abuse and trauma ruined everything and just took her down a path that no one can recover from.. and the best thing she could do was live with who she was and not look back.

But alas, Shepard.  The cure to any problem.

In response to yorkj86's picture, I love how they did Jack's trip down memory lane on Pragia. Particularly her describing how she feels like she should be an all-out ****, but instead she's just a child again.

Did they ever mention how old she was when she escaped? I know she says she was a kid, but are we talking something like twelve years old or sixteen?

If I recall correctly (based upon what was written in this thread some pages ago), using the information available in the game and some associated novel, the narrowest possible age bracket was something like 8 to 13-years-old?

Well technically she does have barrier. All biotic squadmates have barriers instead of kinetic shields if you look at them in the character stats menu. But I would love it if she had charge, that would be so badass. She is vangaurd after all. But she would need to get a huge barrier boost after charging or be able to intelligently take cover (which every squadmate needs).

@Mondo

I keep forgetting to mention how awesome your new avatar is Image IPB.

How can you tell if any of the final romance scenes ended in sex?     They all crawl over each other, fully-clothed.  You can just see the Bioware writers cutting holes out of bedsheets and handing them out to their characters.

Well my logic is that she said she escaped when she was a kid, not a teenager, and the official teenager age is from 13-17. So the oldest she could have been when she escaped is 12.

How do you know?
In fact, the same thing was raised just the other day.  Someone asked if we hadn't accomplished what we set out to do, and quite a few people said that they just liked to socialize with fellow Tali fans.  Nobody that I can remember said that they thought that the thread was necessary to get her into ME3.

It's pretty bad that meaningful conversations in the Tali fan thread are like comets. You have to be at the right place at the right time to see it. You sure as hell don't have to here.

They're no more rare, temporally anyway, than they are here.  It is just that the page count is lower.  Last night when I came in here, the posts on the second page from the top were 11 hours old.  I can just about guarantee that there was a good conversation over that period of time in the Tali thread, it is just that you'd have to sift through 50 or 60 pages.  I understand that you wouldn't want to do that (nor would I), but this doesn't mean that a good discussion is any more rare... just harder to find if you go looking after the fact.

That's so untrue and you know it. The reason you are getting flamed is because you called us elitist and tried to tell us that we should never say anything bad about other characters

No, I said that one person had said something elitist, and suggested that you shouldn't talk bad about other fans, not other characters.  I don't care what characters you do or don't like.

when Talimancers are notorious for ripping on other characters, especially Jack.

Considering your admitted aversion to the thread, one wonders how you'd know such a thing?
I've spent quite a bit of time in that thread, and I can tell you with certainty that you're wrong.  Frankly, Jack almost never comes up, and when she does, about half the time people say that they like her and praise her romance arc for being emotionally charged.  The only character that consistently gets put down in that thread is Miranda, because people feel that she is cold and unromantic, and is there only for T&A.

True, and I perfer not to see it as sex at all; it's bonding. No need for going all the way. I like to think my Sheps at least are nice guys and don't let it go further than we see... bit of making out, letting her know she's important, that someone really does care, that there are some things worth living for, all that jazz... then when the Collectors are dealt with, then you go for breaking the bed/fishtank/shower/door/desk etc. Something tells me that girl might start out all sweet and gentle, but once you get the engine going... you wait to hear that sound barrier snap :D

Plus, a couple of hours before we hit the relay? Not enough time, fellas. Not enough time ;)

The Tali thread is hardly the best place for intelligent discussion if that is what you crave, Pauravi.

@Adriano: Your loss. No skin off my back, just as you said. Just thought that your enjoyment of the game being decreased by something like that is quite avoidable.
