That one sentence sums up why the Jack plotline resonated so strongly with me.  For someone so outwardly self-centered to be that (obliquely) selfless and well, noble, makes her character ring all the more true and certainly tugged at more than a few of my heartstrings (I personally love the whole "noble sacrifice" bit; yes, I'm sappy that way).  For a contrast, look at Liara's change from ME1 to ME2: she saves you because she "couldn't let you go."  Jack flips that on its head by trying to cut you loose because she thinks it will save you. Same intended end result, but the underlying difference is selfishness vs. selflessness - the dividing line is razor-thin, even debatable, but it's there.  And yes, it made me feel far more special than any amount of "loving" from Ms. Tempur-Pedic ever could (Tali was better, but it was so saccharine that it threatened to descend into cloyingly fawning).

Signed as well (sorry for snipping, but my posts already tend to wall-of-text without full quotes).  I mean, what use is escapist entertainment when it's not at least partially escapist?  If I wanted more unhappy in this life, I'd watch the news more or check my bank balance more often.

Okay Bobby...good to have you back, but be careful, okay?  We can only take so much banning.  (Yes, it's a horribly-mangled Joker quote, but I couldn't resist.)  But seriously, welcome back.  Your audio edits bring back some of the happy that reality has stolen from us.  :)

Oh please no, not a Morrigan (gag).  I'm already partially convinced that ME3 is going to have the DA:O-style recruitment quests.  While that in and of itself may not bee too bad, there were many things about DA:O (plotting being one of the big ones) that I didn't care for.

Actually, that would work...

Your plotline (the first half, before Jack goes off to look for Shepard) also reminds me of the epilogue for Mira in KotOR II - where she ended up helping some remote world but dying in the process.  Of course, I've always been firmly in the camp that wants Jack to have a happy ending.

EDIT: Wth is up with the formatting in here?  Posting completely ruined my line breaks.

She's got that faraway, happy look there... must be remembering stabbing someone to death.

Uh-oh. Nothing else really sums up what's about to go down with that look.

I always thought Jack's pushing you away was about not wanting to get hurt herself and not trusting anyone, not about protecting shep. I feel like I missed something.

Have, um... Have you seen the last ten pages of the Liara thread after the comic wrapped up? First, it's hilarious, and second, I hope we don't turn into that if BioWare completely Josses us and goes their own way.

I'd probably just stop posting on the forums (or the relevant threads at any rate) if that were to happen - I'm generally of the "if youhave nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" philosophy. Sort of like what I did after Awakening - maybe make my general opinion known with a post or two, but eventually start gravitating towards something else.

Though in this case, that "something else" was ME, so I'm not sure where I'd head to after that...

It comes up if you pick one of the renegade options after the Murtock confession.  If I remember correctly...

SHEPARD: I'm getting a little sick of this wall you're putting up.

JACK: It's there for you, too.  Don't you get it Shepard?  This will screw your mission.  If you wanna live, you goddamn run.

If they screw the pooch with Jack, we'll no doubt come here and talk about how the pooch was screwed.  We will use examples, we will discuss dialogue choices, character derailment.  What we will NOT do is sit there feeling personally insulted.

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the Liara people, as I don't like seeing folks in that kind of apparent pain.  But as deep as our affections run for this character... It's still a video game.  A piece of art.  What I like about this thread is that more often than not, we will take a more external view of things.  I hope we wouldn't take it so personally.

Not to disrail anything (God, that should be my catchphrase or something), but going back a page, here's the story of how I went into exile for a day.

It all started when I noticed the mods finally locked the Tali thread, and nobody had started the new one yet.  I made a quick joke about how we got a brief respite from Tali threads, and went back to the main page to see, "Oh, well, they finally started the new one."

Then I noticed there were two.  With the exact same title, and with a similar post count.  They still weren't sure which one was going to be the official one yet.

So... I made one too.  :D

I knew I was stepping into it when I started.  The Biotic God thread that had been posted a while back got locked down pretty quickly, because it was a pitch-perfect parody of the Tali thread, and you don't do that around here without somebody getting angry.  But I just couldn't resist.  Besides, it was probably just going to get ignored anyway, since anybody who knew me knew that I wasn't a huge fan of the Tali thread.

But then some folks started posting to it.  So I decided to post again.

And then more people started posting.  I redid my first post to be an utterly lame version of the standard first post of the Tali thread, and proudly declared my thread "the real one."

It was on, now.

In the end, I suppose what might have been my real downfall was that I posted several times to my own thread.  I suppose it might have fallen under the mods' very loose definition of "spamming," what I was doing.  They weren't just pointless bumps, mind you, (This wasn't like the other Tali threads, after all).  It was me adding my version of "content" to the thread (i.e. random Tali images that were on the first page of Google Image Search).  I was just about to post the first chapter of my epic Tali fanfic, when I saw that white screen.

Somebody questioned this before, and I'll just say that this was my first temp ban.  At first, I kinda laughed about it, and messaged a few folks from the Jack thread who had been posting on my Tali thread, like, "Ha, it was totally worth it!"  Then I started going into panic mode, like, "Wait, maybe this ISN'T a temp ban!  Maybe I pissed them off so much that they've gotten rid of me permanently.  Life without the ME forums... OH NOES!"

And then 24 hours later, I was back online.

In the end, I suppose I deserved it.  But the galling thing about it all, the thing that annoys me the most, is that they didn't just lock my "real" Tali thread.  They deleted it!  I will give the Tali fans credit for one thing: if you go to the first few pages of their new official thread, you'll see some of them discussing it, and they thought it was funny.  One even said something like, "Somebody should start a 5.0 thread like that, and keep it updated."  So even the folks I was sort of tweaking with my thread were laughing at it.  And yet the mods not only kicked me for a day, they completely wiped out the thread!

Ah, well, lesson learned.  The next time they shut down the Tali thread, though, I'm going to be ready.  I'm going to have the first post all composed and set so that my Tali thread will be the most official and REALLY real, and it will thrill me to no end to know that they'll all be posting on a thread I started. ^_^

Yeah... another thing I like about this thread is that we're not that wrapped up in this one particular character, even though we like her a lot. Most of us have probably played their fair share of video games and already have a sense of how good or bad things can potentially get. If they do mess up, I think we'll be able to look at it as an artistic failure rather than some kind of personal affront.

I'll dry my eyes and move on... the mass media of the world is littered with more missed chances than the elephant's graveyard is with ivory. We can applaud writers, heap praise at their doors, but in the end they pluck the strings - they can throw out a four-minute wonder for the MTV crowd or a 16-minute magnum-opus. We show our opinion by buying the new album or not. And every album (well, nearly every album) has a couple of duff tracks on it. Fact of life. If they look over Jack in favour of fixing something else, they can't be blamed for it. They were dealing with a bigger picture.

We'll probably sulk a bit, berate them for missing out on doing something extra-special, and move on. And probably think twice about buying their next album in case their chops are still a bit sloppy ;)

I'm curious, with the Kasumi DLC what comments does she make regarding Shepard's romance with Jack?

With a face like that, I don't blame you one bit.

Totally un-related note; my attempt at any form of modding to play as Jack have failed, thanks to some pain-in-the-arse technical whatsit that I cannot find an explaination for. *Angry face*

Yeah, when we first started talking about it, I vaguely remember some folks saying it was possible, but you had to mod your Coalesced.ini to "preload" the resources necessary to play as that model.  ME2 is smart in that, it doesn't load up resources for a scene unless it needs them.  So if you were to try and load up Jack's model, and Jack wasn't in that scene, the game would barf on you.

And then I was reading that you could do it with that preloading, but you'd get weird bugs like the Normandy losing all sound, and other stuff.  So I kinda put it out of my mind.  I was kinda crossing my fingers that those issues were resolved, and people were able to change the models out more easily, but I guess not.

That sounds pretty creepy.  Reminds me of some old folklore I wish I had never heard...

I heard that Kasumi has something to say about each of the LIs.  Anyone know what Kasumi says about Jack?

"You're a brave man to spend so much time with Jack - I don't even want to head down to that part of the ship. I guess there's someone out there for everyone - even her."

Strikes me as a rather snide thing to say, considering one of her other comments is:

"I can see why Jack is the way she is. I don't like it, but I can understand it."

I read that as Kasumi being potentially jealous... that or the writers are so clued up that no other character besides Shepard can figure her out, which is a stretch if you ask me. Shepard - catnip for anything female, regardless of species. I'm half expecting Urz to turn out to be female...

Hmmm...

Dear BioWare Dev Team Guys & Gals,

There really is only so many times you can kick a puppy before people get really irritated with it and call Animal Control on you or something. Come on, give Jack a break. The girl deserves a happy ending.  We know she's not Tali, so you don't have a billion screaming fanboys to appease, and there's no chance we're going to send you hate mail and possibly threaten to burn down your offices if you ignore us, but we think she's earned a break that doesn't involve getting blown up/incinerated/biotic-overloaded/spaced/shot/liquified/disintegrated/insert-ignominious-death-as-applicable. You make a character with a tragic background, giving them a tragic end is... well, it certainly reinforces the idea that there's not much to come for the unhappy in this life other than, well, more unhappy. Stuff like that makes bunny cry, as the internet says.

So, we're not demanding anything, we're just asking, nicely. Let the most unlikely fairytale princess be the princess for once. Maybe not in the sparkling ballgown and all that, but you get the idea.

Many thanks, and keep up the good work,

Everyone here in the Jack fanthread

XXX

You think that might do the trick, guys? :D

I hope so. I really want a happy ending with Jack. I'm sure there are some interesting ideas about her going off on her own, but I'd much prefer that she stay with Shepard throughout all of ME3 (as long as you don't make any wrong decisions). I don't see any reason why she would leave in ME3 if you romanced her in ME2. And I don't see why their relationship couldn't work out. It may seem generic, but I hope Shepard and Jack can live happily ever after in the end Image IPB.

I can't see her leaving either.

When she talks about that relationship with Murtok she mentions how he was planning to set them up a home.  That obviously meant a lot to her.. he made her want to settle down and not keep down the path of kill, steal, and kill some more.  Even though she said he used her like the rest you could tell that deep down inside she wanted that sense of stability with someone else.. and not to always be on her own.
