AFAIK this is basically the same case with all of the character threads except for this one and Samara's.  Maybe Garrus's thread to a lessor extent.

The Ash thread is fair-to-good about occasional serious discussion about the character beyond OMG SHED NEVER LEEVE ASHANDSHEPARD4EVA

Well I posted in the Ash thread one time.  I said that she was my favorite ME1 LI and she was tough and pretty.  I just wished that she would lay off the poems a little.

I was told to "STFU and GTFO"

Some people take the Tennyson very seriously, I apologize.

The Samara thread doesn't take itself too seriously. Between anticipating how Samara would act while high, and "super-pooping", it helps to keep the participants in check.

Man, all this talk of "what draws you to Jack's character thread" reminded me of what drew me to post here initially: a little troll known as ZennExile.  (I feel safe mentioning his name now, since I followed him for a while after the whole incident, and he hasn't posted in about a month, so he's either banned permanently, or he's gone.)

Before he stuck his nose in, I just kinda lurked around here, occasionally poking my nose in a thread or two, making my lame CSI jokes.  When I visited here, though, I saw what was obviously a troll trying to get his jollies by picking on one of the smallest character threads, and I stepped in.  And I immediately gained a lot of respect for the folks here when I started stressing that they ignore the guy and, apart from a few exceptions, most people did.  A sign of a lame fanboyish thread is when they feel like they have to keep getting into it with the obvious troll, instead of ignoring him, but the folks around here got the message, and Zenny went on to try and taunt the Thane thread, who to their credit, didn't give him much ammunition either.

It's weird, but it's amazing how much this thread expanded since Zenny.  The thread was a month old and only had 16 pages when he first started trolling, and now it's two months old, and look where we are now.  Could also be because more folks have finished the game now, and have time to chat on the boards instead of playing it, but still... it's been a fun month. ^_^

I vaguely recall something about that...was it to do with blacked out quotes?

I also came across my very first post in the thread, as well, on page nine!

Well I appreciate you willing to apologize for someone else, because I know it wasn't you.

Hello Jack Thread people. Just dropping in to say hi and show some support. At first I wasn't sure about Jack, she sure is deep and complex, I have come to like her character alot overall. I think most people dismiss her without getting to know the character behind the facade she throws up. I have to say too, she has a very beautiful face.

Lol. I know who that must've been. Yeah it can be a little less than civil in there at times, they're mostly nice though imo.

Hee hee.  If my vast experience with the web has taught me one thing, it's that trolls just hate hate HATE to have their brilliant trolling completely ignored.  So I just posted black boxes in the place of all his quotes when I posted, and acted as if he wasn't even there.  He just kept responding to me, and I just kept on doing it.  It was a thing of beauty.

In some ways, I sorta miss him: he was just so much fun to tweak, because he was so completely and utterly predictable.

"We will give them the worst fate an enemy can suffer - to be ignored."  Some Krogan in ME2 said that.  It's true.  Trolls wither and die if not given attention.

I believe it was Okeer referring to the genophage.
“I shall give the Genophage the greatest insult an enemy can recieve: to be ignored.”

Yeah, so true.  Unfortunately though, there are quite a few members in the forum that either can't resist the urge or just don't understand the concept of this.

I remember that. That was a lot of fun. Zenn was persistant and somewhat intelligent as well, which made it all the more entertaining.

That was the sort of maddening thing about him, too, was that he SEEMED like the kinda guy you could actually have an intelligent debate with.  He wasn't just saying, "JACK SUX, HA HA!!!!!!"  He used proper spelling and grammar, and seemed fairly smart.  But as it went on, you could see him just flat-out ignoring the arguments people were presenting and saying, "Yes, but Jack still is horrible, and anyone who likes her character is an idiot."  He was the worst kind of troll: the stealth troll.  Or "stroll." ^_^

Again from reading your responses to my last post;

What makes Jack unique among all the other characters is that she is still in the middle of her character developement, much like how Garrus was in the first game. Will you take her on a higher path? Or will you coddle her renegade lifestyle? I've taken a lot of thought into this lately and I've already explained my own thoughts on this, but your responses have given me some good perspectives that can help me build a better idea.

Really what I want for Jack is to fix her, but I have also accepted that she may not even need that. She can still continue being a great character without counseling, I still really like her even outside of the romance. Though I'm not sure that Jack would commit suicide if you use her negatively, she does seem a bit too hardy for that.

I decided to look at some of those posts your talking about.  Some of the posts that he made were several paragraphs long.  I remember when he was around here in the forums.  You were teasing him a little though.  He may have gone away a little faster if you had totally ignored him.^_^

Edit:  There are a few members here in the forum now, that are pretty similar to him too.

What about Jack do you think needs fixing?

No really, I want to know.

I think that if you change the behavior of Jack, only for Shepard. For the rest it will behave as before (especially with Miranda).

Probably was just a poor choice of words on their part.  I think we can all agree that Jack is on a self-destructive path that, if Shepard hadn't intervened, would have most likely resulted in her dead, incarcerated for the rest of her life, or something similar.  She needs to realize her own self-worth and understand that there could be somebody who cares enough about her to not want to see her destroy herself.

In the end, though, it's really not up to Shepard to "fix" Jack.  The best he can do is support her, show her he cares about her, and then hope that she can summon enough personal strength to move past her personal issues and become a stronger person.  Jack, like everybody else in this world, has to "fix" herself and her own problems.  But a little support from somebody like Shepard can help her on that path.

Oh, old ZennExile... the man who had to holler from the mountaintops that ME2 was sellout trash because he no longer had to constantly sell the hundreds of guns and pairs of trousers he was hauling around with himself, have to micromanage his skills to the very last skillpoint and could no longer dress up his crew in colour-coded armor types... bless him. It was all about the game mechanics to him, and how Bioware had betrayed his expectations. That and he really liked the sound of his own voice.

Let's go raise a glass to him - he tried to burn the thread down, instead we just threw more wood on the fire and now we cook dinner on it and sing songs around it :D

Indeed.  I've said as much a couple pages back, but as it was one of my shinier moments on this thread, I may as well repeat myself.

Jack isn't broken, nor is she crazy.  Broken and crazy people have no idea what they're doing. whereas Jack knows exactly what she's doing.  The object isn't to fix, but rather to persuade her that her defense mechanisms are a zero-sum game, and that if she goes to all that trouble to stay alone, she really will be.

There's a person underneath all that and Shepard's romance isn't so much as dragging it out by hook or by crook, but rather running interference so she can do it herself.
