I don't know about that. If nothing else, there's a good amount of crossover for some of us. I'd say there are definitely some Samara fans who don't like Jack and possibly some Jack fans who aren't too keen on Samara.

Still... it's been kind of cool to see the discussion between the two groups of fans. It added some rather fun spice to the thread. ^_^

But I would like to think there is a mutual respect.

Uh oh... we're risking some dangerous waters here if we get too far into the War in the Pacific... please, don't get me started on use of the bomb.

Let me diffuse it now -

I'd like to think so. But only two frequenters of the Samara fan thread post in here often. York and Johnny. I'm not trying to imply anything, just say'n. It's nice though to have frequenters of other fan threads post in here. As long as they're not trolling of course. Which is still usually fun...

Because Nagumo didn't launch a third attack?  Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Japan did a pretty good number on the U.S. Pacific fleet as it was.  No they didn't destroy all of the fuel and oil dumps, or all of the reapair facilities.  If that was done, the U.S. could  divert Atlantic Naval resources, and the U.S. had vast amounts of resources throughout the entire country, not just the west coast.

The U.S. would be Irrevocably crippled?  I don't think so.
Japan secures all resources it needs?  I don't think so.

If they level Pearl Harbour, that gives them a minimum one year free reign in the Pacific, one of the US admirals admitted as much at the time (I'd have to look his name up). That is immense. You're underestimating just how badly Nagumo bottled that whole thing. Success = the US is virtually done in that part of the world. Keep in mind, Germany officially declared war shortly afterward, therefore they wouldn't leave the Atlantic open. Overall resources? Sure, but again, since we're talking hypotheticals, you have the Asian prosperity sphere thing going on. All that funneling into their war effort directly.

What would Jack be doing in WW2? Back on-topic.

Thinking about both characters' cutscene powers, I'd be inclined to say Jack would win. Samara talks about breaking out of a local police station and possibly dieing from that. Jack rips through 3 ymir mechs and a space station full of gaurds and prisoners and she's still ready for more.

But about Samara breaking out of that police station, it's one thing I never understood. She says that she has a better chance of surviving by going with Shepard and trying to take out the freaking collectors' HQ, than breaking out of some local police station. I think I'd take my chances with the police station...

Not quite, she says that she will probably kill innocents if she has to break out of the police station and that she may die during the attempt.  I think it's both that make her want to avoid the situation if at all possible.

I like each character for different reasons, I root for Jack to overcome her past, and I feel for Samara deciding to hunt down and end the serial killing spree of her daughter who is literally addicted to killing.

I think that's actually one of the strongest appeals Jack may have, in terms of why fans like her. It's that desire to see someone with so much past suffering come out on top in the face of adversity.

Yeah good point. But one of your squadmates always says, "A slim chance is better than none", so I just assumed her possibly dieing trying to break out was the main reason.

No not virtually done IMO.  Delayed? yes
One Admiral?  That is not enough to make an informed decision IMO.  Even if it was the case, that buys Japan some time, but not enough IMO.

I said divert Atlantic resources there.  I didn't say divert all U.S. Naval resources there and leave the Atlantic totally open.  Germany also has to deal with the British Navy and Germany had their hands full with Russia also.

The Asian Pacific sphere is mostly islands.  What is getting funneled and from where? They didn't conquer China.
Japan lost a HUGE portion of it's oil supplies prior to Pear Harbor.

One of the main reasons for Japan's attack was over resources.
The U.S. was cutting them off economically.  The western countries were imposing sanctions against them.  Japan wanted control over the Pacific/Asia theatre and they wanted the U.S. Pacific fleet out of the theatre, but they still wouldn't have the resources because they hadn't conquered China.  The U.S. had vast amounts of resources and outpaced the world in production.

Japan had the misbelief that by destroying the U.S. Pacific fleet, they would demoralize the U.S., and the U.S. would lose it's willingness to fight and destabilize the country.  Wrong!

Again IMO, it gets dragged out longer, but inevitably the Japanese lose.

I think Jack is a very interesting character in several ways.

Here are a few:

To be as fairly stable as she is for what she has been through, is amazing.  It is a true testament to her strength and courage.  Though she has committed a lot of crimes in her past, she shows that she has the ability to change.  Though aggressive, she can also be somewhat passive.  Though appearing at first to be somewhat diabolical, she actually shows a hardened exterior that can be penetrated to reveal another side.  She is also loving.

Had to look it up, but it was Nimitz, "Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet". I think he would have had an informed opinion.

Again, I'm fairly certain any other potential resources (Atlantic-based or otherwise) would have been factored into his statement.

Oil-rich East Indies? Phillipines? They would have had a stranglehold on pretty much everything west of the Americas and north of Australia. Consolidate that for a year, cut off China, subdue it, take its resources as well.

This is irrelevant to our hypothetical scenario...

Japan had the misbelief that by destroying the U.S. Pacific fleet, they would demoralize the U.S., and the U.S. would lose it's willingness to fight and destabilize the country.  Wrong!

Again IMO, it gets dragged out longer, but inevitably the Japanese lose.

Again, irrelevant to our hypothetical scenario. If Pearl Harbour was a success, you don't leave the US with the possibility to salvage, nor with its foot still in the door. Perhaps it becomes more hesitant, perhaps public sentiment directs itself elsewhere, or a million other different situations unfold.

Anyway, lol, this isn't the place for this discussion at all, and I'm feeling like quite the hypocrite in terms of derailing a thread!

-edit. damn lines.

*sticks tongue out at adriano_c*    They lost!

I like history and in particular WWII history, but as you alluded to, everyone else would just assume we move on to the thread topic.  So that is fine with me and we will leave it at that.

I'm not sure if it was scrapped. It could just activate at a weird place. I walked around the Citadel for a while with both of them in my squad but that conversation didn't initiate. I haven't tried anywhere else though.

Is this what you heard?

When she says he looks familiar, and she had bounty hunters chasing her all over and sometimes they caught her.  Then he says if he caught her her, that she would damn well remember it.  Then she calls him a bastard.

Meanwhile, on 4chan:

"Jack: **** tier in both looks and personality. Sure she has a prettier face than Ashley but I don't know what bioware was thinking when they decided that bald with ugly prison tattoos everywhere on a skinny boy body was a good look.  Personality wise shes just as bad. A mentally unstable psychopath and total **** I didn't want her on my ship much less in my bed."

Good ol' /v/.
