No not virtually done IMO. Delayed? yes
One Admiral? That is not enough to make an informed decision IMO. Even if it was the case, that buys Japan some time, but not enough IMO.
Had to look it up, but it was Nimitz, "Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet". I think he would have had an informed opinion.
I said divert Atlantic resources there. I didn't say divert all U.S. Naval resources there and leave the Atlantic totally open. Germany also has to deal with the British Navy and Germany had their hands full with Russia also.
The Asian Pacific sphere is mostly islands. What is getting funneled and from where? They didn't conquer China.
Japan lost a HUGE portion of it's oil supplies prior to Pear Harbor.
Again, I'm fairly certain any other potential resources (Atlantic-based or otherwise) would have been factored into his statement.
Oil-rich East Indies? Phillipines? They would have had a stranglehold on pretty much everything west of the Americas and north of Australia. Consolidate that for a
year, cut off China, subdue it, take its resources as well.
One of the main reasons for Japan's attack was over resources.
The U.S. was cutting them off economically. The western countries were imposing sanctions against them. Japan wanted control over the Pacific/Asia theatre and they wanted the U.S. Pacific fleet out of the theatre, but they still wouldn't have the resources because they hadn't conquered China. The U.S. had vast amounts of resources and outpaced the world in production.
This is irrelevant to our hypothetical scenario...
Japan had the misbelief that by destroying the U.S. Pacific fleet, they would demoralize the U.S., and the U.S. would lose it's willingness to fight and destabilize the country. Wrong!
Again IMO, it gets dragged out longer, but inevitably the Japanese lose.
Again, irrelevant to our hypothetical scenario. If Pearl Harbour was a success, you don't leave the US with the possibility to salvage, nor with its foot still in the door. Perhaps it becomes more hesitant, perhaps public sentiment directs itself elsewhere, or a million other different situations unfold.
Anyway, lol, this isn't the place for this discussion at all, and I'm feeling like quite the hypocrite in terms of derailing a thread!
-edit. damn lines.
