I really think they did an exceptional job with her face... the range of expression and the richness of it is awesome. Warm smiles, sad smiles, that wonderful Billy-Idol-sneer, and all the wonderful sad faces (particularly the want-to-cry-but-not-gonna face or the gonna-cry-any-minute-now face). We've all seen how odd Sheploo or Miranda look when they smile or scowl, but Jack really is a postergirl for the face tech they've used. Couple that with the great vocal performance... she really is the most three-dimensional character in the game, bar none; movement, expression and performance marry wonderfully - to a degree that buries the competition.
Surely they can't throw away something that good.

I'll agree with that. Alot of the humans in the game have a knack for being alittle jarring when you watch them, but Jack doesn't. At least, not to the degree, or frequency that the rest do. In fact, I think only Liara's unique animations in her ME1 dialogue looked better, and that was set up.Mondo47 wrote...
The more I look at that particular smile the more I think it's bittersweet and whistful - it is from when she talks about escaping Teltin for the first time. It's happy-but-sad Jack.

Speaking of facial expressions, I love this:

They're also cold-blooded, and cold-blooded species need less food than a warm-blooded animal of the same size, as well as being able to go hungry for longer iirc.Jackal904 wrote...
Wrex is also a biotic, and I'd assume Krogan's need to eat as much food equal to half their body mass. But Krogans are known for their ability to survive situations that other species can't, so I guess it makes sense that he would win a survivor challenge.

Haha yeah she looks happy but that's when she's talking about how she was tortured her entire childhood so I doubt it was a happy smile. But it's true how amazing of a job BioWare did with Jack's facial expressions. She has the best in the game. The "want-to-cry-but-not gonna" face, and the "gonna-cry-any-minute-now" face are the most convincing and heartwarming I've ever seen in a game.
I mean c'mon! Look at that face!

What unique Liara animatons are you talking about? I can't think of anything from ME1 or ME2 that surpasses Jack's facial expressions.

Going from memory here, so forgive me if I get it wrong. In her first conversation, if Sheperd says "It sounds like you want to dissect me in a lab somewhere", Liara reaction right after that, I always love how that looks. .. But that could just be me, and a rose-tinted glasses scenario.Jackal904 wrote...

If you mean the glasses from the Alternate Appearance Pack costume, then this fellow is working on it:

Unfortunately, he's about a week overdue and there's no indication when he'll be releasing it.
EDIT: The last few pages have been really interesting discussion- and picture-wise (even the digression into WW2). Wish I could've joined in, but by the time I got my thoughts straight, someone or other had already beaten me to it.

And since I'm bored I've decided to post some of the positive comments here. These are all comments from random people on youtube about Jack's paragon romance scene.
omg this is one of the only 2 games ever that made me cry

I thought, Jack? Romance? LOL... But this scene... wow, really awesome

I like how, at the very end of the video, you can see from her smile that, perhaps for the first time in her life, she can give up her "tough-guy" front so that she can be genuinely happy with someone who truly loves her.
Great writing and great design for this scene.

^-^ This is so cute (I haven't finished the game yet and I'm a female) but seeing the romance between Jack and Shepard makes me want to play MS2 through again just to see that romantic sub-plot.
It's so cute to see Jack be so vulnerable.

I think this is one of the more beautiful scenes in Mass Effect

The fact that she's on the verge of tears the instant she walks in kind of makes the entire scene "work".

wow, i guess jack can be kind of cute
Aw her romance is sweet. I think I'll pair my maleshep with her.
These next two made me laugh.
Why does Jack get the best sex scene? Lol

jack is really the deepest of all the romances. just don't cheat on her in ME 3 lmao or your ass is dead.

Jack crying i never expected that

I didn't know she could show her sensitive side like that. Nice.

This is probably the best romance in the game.

I thought that was the best romance

From the on-set, I was adamant on Tali, and in fact I did go down that Romance path. But, I had always liked Jack, and had saw over the course of the game that there was more to her; that basically she was just waiting for someone to give ****. I decided to go back and pursue a Romance with her, and I think out of all of them her's has the deepest emotional connection. Tali is Cute, and Miranda is basically hero does the hot chick, but Jack's romance feels like something important
I don't agree with this guy's criticism of BioWare, but I like how passionate he is about Jack's depth as a character.
i really liked her character. From beginning to end they could make a game on just her story, but no, Bioware makes games so hilt freaken deep a character of this caliber is just a side character.

Jack's romance scene scores the title of "Most Sentimental". Despite her first apparent 'psychotic' outlook, deep down there's a real person, hidden under all the 'craziness'.
Jack's the deepest romance out of the three MaleShep romances. Definitely.
This doesn't have to do with Jack's paragon romance scene but I thought I'd post it anyway
I like how people don't like the character/look Jack was given, but then say "Just make her like/look like Miranda, and I'd be fine"... So you just want Miranda then.
This is what makes her character, if you don't like that pick Miranda then! Jack wouldn't be the same with long hair and no tattoos. There is a reason for them being part of her.
Get over it, or get a mod (if you're on pc) if you're that desperate.
I think this next one applies to a lot of people. Mainly the first sentence.
Miranda was my first romance (my hormones got the better of me when I saw her in that latex catsuit). But I've choosen Jack for my second playthrough and I'm pretty sure this is the save I'm going to import to Mass Effect 3.
These next few comments are from gneissguy's video of Shepard rejecting Jack when she comes to him in his cabin. What's funny is that some people called him a jerk for doing it so he had to explain that it was just for the sake of recording it and putting it on youtube.
This is brutal. You can see the hurt in her eyes and you can hear it in her voice. You can practically hear her heart breaking, too.

Jeeeeez!! I had a hard time liking Jack but this....my God, I think I just died a little inside.

Geeze, rejecting anyone at this point makes you feel like a monster. Jack's is by far the worst, though.

Jeez, I didn't even *like* Jack, and I thought this was painful.

Wow, that's just... I can't even imagine how BioWare had the guts to even put this in the game. Trying not to choke up here, lol.
This next one cracked me up.
wow even though this is a game I want to ****ing kick shepard in the nads until they look like popped balloons

I've always wondered what happened if the Renegade option was picked. But I was too scared to do it because I knew it had to be awful... dear God was I right.
That dialogue makes Shepard the King of Douche Bags.
It works for the guys too; Thane has a pretty expressive face (even though it seems to do mopey more than any other mood) but while I find the reading flat plenty of other people think it's a good characterisation, Garrus has limited expression (small eyes, no lips, ambiguous mandible movements for expressions) and Jacob has a decent (if cornball) reading, but visually crashes into the uncanny valley way too often.
I think Grunt, despite not being a love interest and thus perhaps not being a character to invest much emotion in, easily has the most expressive facial movements combined with Steve Blum's storming reading. Grunt does sad, happy, excited, awestruck, sad, frustrated, confused... and communicates it all with a non-human face (albeit one with easily mapped features to assist recognition). Mordin also has these factors working in his favour.
It really seems that BioWare put a lot of work into their 'showcase' characters, and it pays off more in some than in others it appears. Kinda glad that Jack's one of the poster-children of the games

As for what makes the characters popular, for me it's mostly just the writing. I like the voice acting for almost all the characters, and the animations add something sure. But I think if I was to make a list of my favorites, they would have been about the same even if it was a text game.

But... it's not all there is to her and I discovered, as I interacted with her more and more, that she is actually a very interesting character. At her worse she is a near-sociopath with a dangerous addiction to violence, but at her best she can actually be a pretty sympathetic character, particularly to characters who, like my initial ME2 playthrough, come from the Akuze background and its bad history with Cerberus. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised.
Still wouldn't romance her, though. I'm going to have to stick with Kelly's recommendation that she really isn't psychologically ready for that kind of relationship at the moment. Your mileage may vary though.

I was looking at the No tats+ mod in the projects section while seeing if anyone has modded off her visor on the dlc outfit. Looking at some of the pics without her tats but still with the surgical scars can help give additional perspective of how much Cerberus' little operation did to her, mostly since they're easier to see. Some show no scars or tats at all, to me it looks like she's quite fit, especially in the conversation frontal view.
I guess the bastards had no decency to use an anesthetic, pain to clear way for a more powerful biotic.
