After reading through all your thoughts on Jack wondering what happiness might be, or what being normal might be, consider this... Jack's uplifting escape story "[...] the crew used me, then sold me."
This is a child that has known nothing but pain; cramps in fingers and toes as surgery heals, being unable to lie down or stand up because it hurts too much, waking from sleep with new canyons carved into her skin, and the sharp needle of electric shocks and the fat, warm feeling of an eye swollen shut or another burst lip. Her only comfort in life comes from a piece of furniture that has become her cave; a place she can hide from this vile existance, a place she can be the small, frightened child she is.
Then she escapes; she lets all her anger go at anything that crosses her path. She manages more by luck than judgement to get a vehicle off the ground and gets into space. Where to go? Her world of a couple of rooms and intense pain is bigger than anything she can imagine. It's impossible to comprehend. She's even smaller and more scared than she was before. She floats like a bottle in the Pacific until the other ship comes.
Now it is only implied as to what happens to Jack on the ship, but we know they would have found a half-starved girl barely into her teens (if that), probably covered in as much blood as scar tissue and medical tattooing. They clean her up, feed her, maybe not everyone on the ship was bad to her, but someone probably took advantage. Any pain she suffered there would have been nothing compared to what she went through under the knife. Besides, she wouldn't have known it was wrong. Maybe after the first time she was willing. Poor kid might have actually thought they loved her as they passed her around. Maybe it made her happy for the first time in her life; it'll have been the first affection, the first closeness, she'll have ever felt.
Go on, feel sick. It gets worse.
Maybe there's some incident that triggers it, or maybe they just get bored, no longer want to care for this child, or maybe someone thinks she'll be better off away from the ship and does it to get her away from the rest of the crew. So they sell her, probably to Batarians, since they're so hot on it (****ing Squints - bomb the ****ers into the stone age or let the Krogan invade all their colonies, see how they like it). She's told to go with these other people. Jack doesn't like the new people; they're not the ones that have looked after her so well. Maybe she puts up a fight, but whatever goes down, she ends up another slave in the belly of the slaver's vessel... more alone and bereft than she has ever been. The people that cared for her, loved her (nauseating, insn't it), cast her aside. Abandoned her. And suddenly she wishes she was back under her desk, because she is smaller, more alone, and more hurt than she has ever been in her whole life... and it doesn't get any better.
As she gets older she understands what the first crew did to her, how wrong it was. "Love" becomes a wrong thing. Sex, well, as she matures she enjoys it, but there's no "love" in it. She's not even sure that thing's real. She learns by example; everyone uses her and abandons her, so she does it first. Anyone who crosses her, especially as her powers grow, dies. Anyone that might hurt her is pushed away, sometimes terminally. Either way, it stops anyone hurting her. To Jack, there's no such thing as love. She bounces from one set of thieves and cutthroats (and prisons terms) to another. And then she meets Murtock.
She thinks he's just in it for what he can take, what he can use. They have sex, they rip off people, Jack enjoys the physicality and the buzz of criminal activity (all sweet conditioned leftovers from Teltin). And then he dies. Jack shrugs, prepares to move on... and then the message he left plays. The mountain of broken glass, ice, razorwire and jagged stone almost crushes her; someone really loved her, the right way, the proper way, and thought more of her than she thought anyone ever would. She probably screamed and cried more that day than she did in the whole of her time in Teltin. She didn't know, couldn't have known. Her life had made her blind. She had had happiness, love, in her hands. And never knew. Jack's heart breaks, all the old fractures worse than before. And because she didn't see it, she thinks she's stupid, that she maybe somehow earned it.
Eventually, who knows how long it takes, but she eventually puts what's left of her heart back together. Her eyes dry up - she's never going to cry again. She fills all the cracks in her being with hate, more than before - she's never going to let herself feel that kind of pain again. Better to push everyone away. Better to just fight the galaxy to the death, because there's nothing else for her to live for; she's just existing from moment to moment. She dies, ****ing on/off switch. All there is is that black hole in the middle of her being; a woman who has suffered her whole life, had a shot at happiness, and lost it.
There's your Horrible Thought for the Day - you're ****ing welcome. Remember it the next time some Miridian tells you Miranda has had it bad. She can't even spell bad. They try and argue, unleash the little slice of Jack's black hole.
There is a happy ending though: one day someone special finds her...

Feel free to let your eyeliner run, friends.

And so now, on top of the mental image of a poor defenseless child being strapped to a surgical table from time to time and forced to kill other children while hopped up on drugs, I also have a picture of a young Jack in her room, alone, drugged up so she can't fight and barely able to think, watching the world outside her window through blank eyes. And from time to time, one of those bastard scientists comes by to say hello, maybe read her a story or teach her some math, thinking that somehow maybe performing this small courtesy will absolve them of all the bull**** they've done to her.
I've been thinking about the same thing. I like to run these scenarios through my head that may have occured during her time at Teltin. It's why I'm so curious to actually see video of her as a child in the Teltin facility. I have all these ideas and scenarios in my head, and I'm so curious to see if any of them are true. I know some people have said that they don't want to rehash over Jack's traumatic childhood in ME3. That it's already dealt with during her loyalty mission. But I can't help but wonder about specific situations and events that occured there. There is so much about it we don't know.

Now I'm sad, again, but I now have renewed desire to write more of my (tasteful) Jack fanfic. Thanks for all of that. The thought you put in to it is very apparent. You always post the most thoughtful stuff.

Now that I think about what if Jack did have parents? What if they sold her to Cerberus for whatever reason? How would she react to them if she found them? How would your Shepard react? If anything Jacks parents are equally wrong as those scientist at Teltin for selling their daughter for experimental purposes. Perhaps they did not even know what fate their daughter would face. Maybe she was kidnapped from them and it wasn't their fault at all. So much mystery and suspense. This would be a great scenario in ME3 IMO.

This was the most touching part to me. Unfortunatley I can see something similar to these circumstances happening in the real world that we live in.Mondo47 wrote...

I have to say I like how Meer did his dialog with Jack, from the very first "Tell me about you Jack"...the way he delivered it conveyed to me a genuine interest in her, since he's never met someone like her for the most part...while all the others were something more along the lines of "Got time to talk?" or "Got a minute?"...to me it says alot...the others were just normal conversations...but Jack...it was different.
And no need to remember, I copied it down if you don't mind, credits due of course

Wow Mondo way to be a Debbie Downer. That post was like half analysis half sad fanfic. Speaking of; you haven't wrote one in a while. I miss those.
Yeah, I've been out of it for a week, largely because my new classes started and I've been feeling a mite overwhelmed. Writing that though got me fired up again, so I'll be going back to Northwest after I get back in tomorrow afternoon/evening.
I just got thinking about it, and filled in a few blanks with a little logical extrapolation... like I said before, I've seen some real unpleasant things doing counselling, so I just applied one to the other. I got rather angry and a little teary writing it, so it worked for me. Besides, I was still trying to get the splinters out of my back after reading some of the didn't-Miranda-have-it-tough pish in that thread... maybe she wasn't happy, but there's a ****ing difference between unhappy and tragedy. Thought I'd draw a line in the sand

Yeah that's totally understandable, school comes first
I try and stay away from the Miranda thread. I'm not even going to try to argue with the people who think she had it rough. I'd get too frustrated, which would lead to a series of arguements that I don't feel like getting wrapped up in.
This is totally offtopic, but royce, you need to watch this. ****ing hilarious.

As long as the guy who wrote and created the Jack we all know and love sticks around to write her for ME3 as well, I'm all for Mondo teaming up with him to create a super-duo to churn out as much Jack content as possibleyorkj86 wrote...
I want to know why Mondo47 is taking classes, and hasn't already been employed as Jack's writer already by Bioware. Not to offend if you're passionate about your studies, but you do know how to write her character perfectly.

Very nice! That's one of my favorite pictures of her when she has her gun aimed at the Aresh guy from her loyalty mission. She looks so badass there.
