I must admit, I am impressed with this thread. Most character threads just have a bunch of people arguing. I have no trouble at all believing Jack has an artistic side. I think it fits.

I love your Kasumi signature. :)

Speaking of Jack and art and Kasumi... I wonder, if Jack is a bit of an artist, how she would get along with Kasumi. Kasumi is obviously intimidated by her, but if Jack showed a hint of artistic nature I wonder what it would be like to see Jack go up into Kasumi's quarters and look at some of the pieces she has stashed away.

I imagine a somewhat tense moment where Kasumi is coming back from a mission or grabbing a bite to eat, she walks into her quarters and notices someone in the room out of the corner of her eye. She turns to look, and there's Jack staring at one of the paintings on the wall.

I wonder what Jack would have thought of Hock's vault.

Ah, where's Mondo when you need her?

Jack in Hock's vault... hmmm...

Well, while I don't think I can write something as short as I imagine it'd be, Jack doesn't really have any formal experience with art (I surmise at least, skin art notwithstanding). The Egyptian head might warrant a poke, David might warrant a sarcastic comment about his missing 'piece' (while I personally wonder how David stands on his non-load-bearing leg - he's made to work from a certain perspective, so parts of him are not to scale - the missing left leg bore most of the stress, the right has a tree branch added to it to strengthen it, so unless Hock has had it reinforced it should be in bits on the floor by all rights... sorry, my formal training has come out to play, I'll shush now :D ), the Krogan statues might get an "I can tell what it is", the Turian sculpture would likely be mocked or ignored for looking like three bits of drainage pipe, Lady Liberty's head might warrant a "what the **** is that for"... you get the idea.

A lot of what is in Hock's vault is in there for no other reason than it is worth something. Without an appreciation of providence or surmised artistic value, I doubt there's be anything in there that would move Jack. I think she'd prefer paintings like the ones upstairs; you can pour more of yourself into them, they're freer to interpret. The vault is just full of big stuff. Harder to steal too.

Though I think there's one thing she might find some liking for...

Jack picks up the Locust.

Jack: Now this is kinda neat... ha! Stupid ****er left some clips with it. Let's test it on some of this crap...

I wouldn't say your long post went unnoticed. I know I read it and pondered it, and I think you make some interesting points. However, trying to write something on the scale of Mondo's skill is a bit daunting to say the least. She's obviously had a lot of practice and a rather good imagination. That, however, doesn't mean you can't or won't make good comments here. We've got a lot of inspired and level-headed people with a knack for words in this thread (Mondo, "Uncle" Royce, BobbyTheI, and others). It's a bit intimidating at times, but it's also something we've just come to expect and also feel some pride in. So keep posting. I, personally, have liked what you've had to say so far.  :wizard:

I appreciate the support, thank you.

It was one of those things - nothing that'll dent my pride.  If you wanna ponder Jack, you come here, but hey - no one hits a homer everytime.  Big walls of text tend to be just that - walls, and that's understandable too.  I'm used to different kinds of forums and formats, I guess - where you were encouraged to be thorough and "show your work", as it were.

Brevity is the soul of wit, so...

Like my old English prof told me:  "If it takes you 500 words to say something you could have said in a hundred, you will very likely suck at being a writer."
Next time I'll try and keep it to a hundred words or less.  [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]

That's "Automat" by Edward Hopper.  Something like this, I think, would represent something that Jack would both need the most and want the least.  No hum of engines, no explosions, no gunfire, no one talking to her.  Just her alone with her thoughts, staring off into space.

Scary thing for someone like Jack, but completely necessary.  And she'd know it, I think, deep down.

It's an interesting choice, to be sure. I'm not usually the type of person to truly take the time to analyze a painting, to deconstruct it into its components and ponder their meaning. However, I can see many things within the painting that do somewhat reflect Jack's personality and experiences... at least in my mind.

For instance, let's see the building itself as Jack's protective walls of emotion, or lack thereof, that she has constructed for herself. Then, outside that construct, there's the rest of the world but it's all black and shades of gray; you can't really discern anything and it's not welcoming. Also, there appear to be lights outside that try to illuminate a path of some sort, but they don't actually illuminate anything at all. Perhaps one could see that as representing beliefs and "paths" that others (like the cult) tried to lead her down and with which she eventually saw as being pointless and having no true worth.

I also find it interesting that the lady's back is turned towards the window. Combined with all the clothing she's wearing (the large, long coat; the drooping hat), anyone who walked by that window and tried to peer in wouldn't necessarily be able to discern much about the woman inside... kind of how Jack puts so much effort into hiding who she truly is from those who show interest in peering into her life. She makes herself as discernable from the outside as the outside is discernible to her.

An interesting choice, Royce. Very interesting. And I've officially over-analyzed a painting for the first time. Go me.

Just write as much as you need, to say whatever it is you want to say. I don't want you or anyone to feel pressured to have a specific word count per post in this thread. It's nice to read long thought out posts, but don't feel like you need to compete with them. Just a few sentences is enough if that's all you need to say something.

On the topic of art and Jack. I think she would prefer paintings where a person or people are not the focus of the picture. Something colorful and not so realstic looking, maybe even very slightly abstract but not nearly enough to not be able to make out what the picture actually is.

I think she would like these paintings:

Yes there are two people in the painting but I think the scenery is the focus.

I think Jack could probably take something from most art, though I think that landscapes might be something she would take longer over than others... she's spent her life going from battle to battle, cell to cell... something that is a window on a place that is quiet and still and big enough to get lost in... I think she'd like that. Jack's the kind of girl who lies on her back in the grass and just enjoys being warm and unbound; sun on her skin, no worry about looking over her shoulder for a little while... just being free.

If Hock had a few landscapes in the vault, I can imagine her cutting one out of its frame and rolling it up and taking it back, tucking it under her cot, taking it out to look at freedom when she's alone...

Thank you for that image.   I think you're absolutely right.  No one would be more appreciative of a serene meadow somewhere than Jack, considering everything she's gone through and seen.

Bioware could implement a Good End for ME3 and let us experience that sight ourselves.  Jack, and Shepard, back on Earth, spend time together somewhere peaceful.  Or we could write some wish-fulfillment ME fanfic.

The latter option won't have a fancy cinematic, but at least it will always happen!

When I said I felt Jack had an artistic side to her I was thinking she would use her forbidden secret hobby for things that best suited her like being a tattoo artist. Honestly I think Jack was the one who created the concepts for her tattoos. I can definitely see Jack opening up her own tattoo parlor on Omega and the Citadel.

To stay on-topic myself... well... did anyone not upgrade the Normandy hull armour? Because this would have been pretty unfortunate.

People who can't/won't appreciate Jack's character.  People who think that not liking a character is tantamount to wanting to see them dead.

I wonder why Bioware specifically made it so that Jack, and only Jack, will die if you don't get the armor upgrade. For the weapons and shields upgrades there are multiple characters that you risk potentially killing because of your negligence, but with the armor you know for certain which character ends up biting it. It seems like such an odd thing to do. Especially since Jack isn't exactly sitting down in engineering all alone. Personally, I think they should have made it a chance for skipping the armor upgrade to kill Jack, Tali, Grunt, or Zaeed. At least that would have been fair.

I didn't mean on purpose! ^_^ I really would want to know if someone just didn't upgrade because of laziness. If one of you Jack fans lost his LI because of such a mistake. I romanced Liara in ME1 but betrayed her with Tali :(. (I missed the Ireturnedyourbodytocerberus dialogue option). Well, however I was really anxious that I could lose Tali or Garrus in the last mission. Especially with Jack it would be rather tragic, because when you romance her you kinda give her some stability and a chance of improving her ways.
Personally, I didn't like Jack at first because of her insubordinative tendencies, but eventually I thought that she's allright, she was even given the honour to make the biotic shield for Shep.;)

Tali can be incinerated by the exploding drive-core, so her death is reserved for another instance of player negligence.

So I was listening to the ending of this song and it made me think of when you reject Jack during her paragon romance scene because most of the lyrics match what you might think is running through her head at the time, plus it sounds really sad. But it should fit right in with the recent wave of a sadness that Mondo has so generously handed out Image IPB.

Never really been a huge DT fan (largely because all the DT fans I've met have been arrogant music snobs, but that's got to just be my bad luck more than anything else). But this one... it's always made me cry for good reasons, especially the last verse. I might get off on industrial harshness, but I'm a sucker for good lyrics.

I'd not heard it for years until just now. I think it fits our gal, too.

True... but Thane can be killed by either the exploding drive core OR by not having the shield upgrade (he gets crushed by an I-beam). So Thane sets a precedent for having 2 chances to kill a crewmate before even getting to the Collector base.
