I don't want to be the one responsible for harrying an artist, but we were talking about 4Chan... I had to save the thread... I had to save us all...

I have no idea who or what 4Chan is and maybe I'm better not to know!

/off topic

I think I'd describe it is a sprawling set of forums for numerous facets of pop culture (gaming, cinema, music, comics, etc.) BUT it is also a home for trading pictures of vile diseases, mutilated corpses and nude pictures duped out of vulnerable girls... so it seems to represent both the best and worst of the internets, and it's filled with the usual slew of electronic s**t-ticks - the arrogant pseudo-intellectuals, the ranters, the fanbois and the rampant bigots.

Hence, in the words of the song, I stay away. :D

It's mostly what Mondo said.  Not surprisingly, 4chan is the place I found the tasteless pictures of Jack and Samara.

Yes, me too.  I would call it the underbelly of forums.  A vicious subculture of perversion and lack of any morality or what one would consider civility.  A de-evolving of the human being into it's primitive state of millions of years ago.  An abomination and disease that must be purged from society.

/sermon

I am worried a little about york's addictiion to this site.  I may have to come up with a Freudian analysis of york, and post it in this thread.:alien:

It's just a matter of staying off of certain boards and knowing who/what to filter out using GreaseMonkey.  More than once a day I can get a good laugh out of 4chan.

In a desperate attempt to get the discussion off of 4chan. Here is the link the comments section on deviantart of that Jack fanart posted a few pages back. I like reading comments about Jack (I enjoy reading the positive ones more). It's interesting to see what random people have to say about her. All of them are positive. And what's funny is that one person says MadSpike should do a similar picture of Miranda, not because she may be an interesting character, but because she has a, "great ass." People like that make it really hard for me to not stereotype Miranda fans.

Sarcastic inquiry: Do you mean "people" or "sexually frustrated males"?

It may not be this way had Bioware not literally focused on her ass and sexuality. Camera angles, advertising of the sex scene, etc. It's kind of Bioware asked for. One reason why I prefer the Jack romance.

In general, the best comments are the ones where people state that at first they hated Jack, but then grew closer to her once they at least spoke with her.  Jack is a treasure of ME2.

I promised not to talk about the evil marketing strategy of Bioware and the way they've portayed Jack as the less interesting character of the game. :innocent:
I also promised not to say that evil marketing strategy mentioned above attracted people who believed they were going to buy a sort of "Halo with sexy women".

It became obvious to me after doing her romance, that the Jack LI was head and shoulders above the rest in the romance category IMO.

As far as character depth goes, she is in the top two IMO.

As I've already said, I was totally pissed off by Jack's first trailer. BUT then I changed my mind even BEFORE the Fight for the Lost trailer because I thought "Damb, SuZe is so craptacular and over the top that I might even like her".

Can't agree with you there. She had her own trailer and her own Fight for the Lost CG video, and character concept art video, and a developer (may have been one of the writers) said that she was one of, if not their favorite new character.

Well they do that because Miranda's purpose is to appease to the... 'horny teenager group' I guess you could say. Which makes up a significant part of the game's audience. Each squadmate is supposed to fit a distinct role to appease to different personalities. Miranda's role is the smoking hot super model for players to ogle.

So her oversexualization has a purpose. It's just not a deep one.

Yea, no doubt about that. In fact everyone I know other than the forum who's played ME2 went with Miranda. I just felt they should have toned this down, her sex scene is going to circulate through the internet anyway. I didn't like that sometimes I'm literally talking to Miranda's ass in her dialog. Just the way marketing is though. Doesn't always account for taste.

I promised not to say that 80% of the forum population believed that Jack was just a "punk, tattooed, foul mouthed, half naked woman added to the game just to attract young male teen-agers". :innocent:
But hey, that's always the same old discussion. 'Cmon people, let's find something new (which is not 4chan related please).

Is there a difference in the appeal between Miranda and Jack, though, in attempting to draw "young male teen-agers" to their characters?

Well that concept art video and that interview were not as advertised as her reveal trailer and FFTL video which was on TV. So most people only saw the two videos that made her look like some generic shallow badass chick.

Kind of depends how you interpret the videos. Jack didn't seem generic because her character itself deviates from the typical female party member or romance interest. I can only imagine how fun it may have been to write her. That made her more interesting for me. I guess people could also get stereotypical riot girl from the trailer though I guess.

I've heard them say that her romance moves too fast, or that it shouldn't happen at all.

All of the ME2 romances move at a breakneck speed.  For example, why the heck is Thane so quick to move on from his wife, especially with his eidetic memory?  I know that Shepard has Super Mojo, but still.

I think Jack's romance is just fine.  I think that the problem isn't really that the romance shouldn't happen, it's that it's impossible to get a glimpse of the entirety of her character without romancing her.

EDIT: Included an example.

Though I think that's not too bad - we should be getting some unique dialog that reveals more facets of her character if we romance her. I do wish there were friendship paths ala Dragon Age. The reason why I've heard people say her romance moves too fast is because they think that Jack wouldn't be able to trust someone that quickly or lessen her suspicions about people that quickly. I'd have to disagree on the basis that, aside possibly from the one person who tragically died, she's never met anyone like Shepard so realistically she's going to act different than she would with other people.

Assuming that what you said is correct, what does this prove?  That Bioware is a business?  Is business evil?

What does this have to do with 4chan?  Are you talking about the Bioware forum or 4chan forum?

Point.

There is, however, a sort of unsettling aspect to "healing" Jack by romancing her. Seriously, wouldn't a professional psychiatrist (which Kelly supposedly is though she never seems to do anything besides talk about sex) be more qualified? I doubt Shepard's got a doctorate in psychology.

Business isn't evil, but criticizing the way they advertise is fair. Though with that said I didn't find anything particularly wrong with the way they advertised Jack, they can't give everything away in the trailers after all.

The thing with Jack is that her main "problem" is that all her life people have used and abused her. When someone comes along who does not want to do either, shouldn't she reevaluate her opinions regarding people?

I promised not to show it before it was finished, but since I've uploaded it on DeviantArt for feedback, why not posting it here too?

Disclaimer: this drawing SUCKS and I HATE IT. The drawing itself is praying the Art God to evolve into something better or to cease existing.

Comments and costructive criticism are welcome.
