Sure, maybe we add complexity as we debate this and that, but even if we don't ever see it, I'm willing to bet there's an entire life story for Jack somewhere; names, dates, places, sentences served, planets visited, jackasses blown away - the works. Because if there wasn't, why go to the effort they already have?

If I remember correctly, when Bioware creates a new IP such as Mass Effect or Dragon Age, they create complex "lore" and story background so that their universe is huge yet consistent (and hopefully plot-hole free) because it's easier to create a world and then put a story in it instead of "making up" things as you go on with the story (which makes plot holes more likely). However, only a small % of this makes into the game, most of it is just briefly mentioned in the codex, in the novels or not mentioned at all.
So there might be some extensive bio for Jack and all the other ME characters.

Soooooo... who's for breaking into BioWare's offices when they've all gone to bed for the night and finding the Jack drawer? ;)

I'd not want to hazard a guess at the writer's intent considering we have so little to examine that's remotely concrete. It's just my reading of Jack as I see Jack. I'm quite likely left of the mark, too, but it's no more than how I've slowly come to read the character, her motivations and doubled it up with some of my own speculation probably. It's just me doing Jack vs. The Couch in my head ;)

I don't doubt though that there's always been more to our girl than meets the eye; if all they wanted was a visually interesting female criminal, they could have gone to a lot less effort to meet the brief without making someone as layered and interesting as Jack. We'd be none the wiser in this hypothetical Jack-free universe, and we'd not care. They went to great lengths in making her interesting, in making the audience that found Jack and liked her want these answers.

That would be interesting if they do indeed have her life story with those details.  I don't know exactly what lengths they go through with these characters, but like you alluded to, they need to have some kind of more elaborate character template/biography I would think to go by that is not seen by the gamers.

Oh, uh, about 45 minutes?
Most of the time went into finding decent screenshots of her ink.

That is a neat experience to imagine.  Shepard, Jack, and the rest of the crew watching "Army of Darkness" during 'movie night' on the Normandy.^_^

MST3K  with Jack and Grunt:

I picture the darkened silhouettes of Jack and Grunt sitting in a row of movie theater seats in the foreground, viewed from the rear.  In the background is the movie theater screen.  Jack's silhouette is highlighted by the glow of her biotic corona, and she is pointing at the screen.   Grunt is sitting two seats over.  We know it's Grunt because the Krogan silhouette is unmistakable.

Epantiras, I smell another commission...

:?

That reminds me of an old, hilarious Nutrigrain commercial.   Notice that the second guy is looking at a pair of woman's underwear when the first guy comes in to his office:

Would be nice if the Art of Mass Effect 2 book comes out sometime this year with all the liner notes on the direction the creative team took with each character. There was a really nicely detailed article by Game Informer on how Thane was originally created, and another interview by Pixologic that had some well-sculpted zbrush models. If the full art book looked like that, it'd be awesome.

In other news, I found Sam Hulick's unused theme for Jack on youtube.

I like that.  A lot.   That makes her seem like the badass-high-school-chick-strutting-down-the-main-corridor-of-the-main-school-building-causing-everyone-to-move-to-the-side.  It makes her seem like a true terror and biotic titan.

It would really conflict with the tender Jack we see during the final romance scene, though, even moreso than the Jack theme that's on the OST.

The sound of that also kind of conflicts with the concept art we have of Jack, but I'm there was probably some disconnection between the audio designers and the character designers.

I like the percussion in that unused track, not quite too sure about the synth but off the top of my head some guitar riffs wouldn't hurt. Sounds like the kind of song that'd be playing when Jack strolls out of a building she set fire to with some unfriendlies still trapped inside screaming for their lives.
