Why?  Do you know something that we don't?

Well I was wondering what would happen if a VA for a major character died or was just unable to voice act for the same character in a sequel. And then I wondered what would happen if Courtney Taylor somehow ended up not being the VA for Jack in ME3, and how much it would suck.

axl99 wrote...

It'd be a bit annoying. Kinda like the VA switch with Shiala. The inconsistency grated on my ears.

On the
other side of the coin, I dunno how the Miri fans will react if Yvonne Strahovski weren't around for ME3.

Shiala's VA switched in ME2? Wow, I didn't know that. They so sound similar I couldn't even tell. I did recognize a slight different between the two voices, but I still thought it was the same VA.

And yeah the thing with Yvonne Strahovski also made me think of this question. We all know she's busy with Chuck, and I'm sure if she had to pick between Chuck and ME3, she'd definitely go with Chuck. But for ME3 she just has to come in a few times and say a bunch of lines. I'm sure it'll work out.

They'd
probably start a riot.

Or even worse, changing Tali's voice actress.......
Could possibly bring about the apocalypse for bioware.../../../images/forum/emoticons/crying.png

If Tali's VA were to change, oh man. The screams of talimancers would be heard around the world.

Yeah I locked my front door just thinking about it.Image IPB

But would I suffer someone else voicing Jack? Short answer: "No." Long answer: "Hell no." Taylor combines petulance with a light rasp at the back of the throat. It makes Jack seem so damned young and so damned old at the same time. No one else could do that. Luckily she makes a living doing this stuff and would have no problems coming back to the booth.

This man speaks the truth.

I've counted Taylor among my favourite voice artistes since Bloodlines, and her two wholly different, if equally brilliant performances as the communist revolutionary ironically nicked Damsel and...the literal damsel, Heather.
Jack was a far larger canvas though, and she shines.
Would I stand a replacement? No. But I'd happily see hear her talents being used for more parts.

I was a big fan of that fanfic a while ago. The first five chapters were great, but I started to lose interest after Thane and Jack developed a romantic relationship. I wish they would have stayed as friends. And after reading Urdaniel's fanfic, it's even harder to picture a
Jack/Thane romance. But the new chapter wasn't bad. The scene with Samara seemed to drag out.

But welcome back Iron Man195. It's been a while. Everytime I read your new name I think of the song "Greased Lightning." :P

I agree.   I was never a fan of this shipping, regardless of its context.

Hey all.  Binged the thread over the past few days, and decided to sign up.

As a bit of background, I played the game with my roommate watching on the couch for most of it.  We agreed that Jack was one of the more interesting characters in the game.  I hate picking a single favorite, but she, Samara, and Thane are a top three.  I did a paragon playthrough, pretty strictly, simply because video games with moral choices bring out my inner do-gooder.  I was intending to romance Tali, but somewhere along the line it clicked with me that sex with her would feel wrong.  I felt like I would be taking advantage of her crush on me (and, probably, a libido bottled up from years of being in a hermetically sealed suit) and would be risking her life in the process.  So, I took the option that said "No, this isn't safe, we can't do this."  I kept talking to Jack because she was already pretty cool, and well, let's just say I was not disappointed.

I have only done the one playthrough, because I hate the canon beginning of ME2, and am not wild about re-doing ME1.

What's funny, though, is that the ink, the buzz-cut, and the abrasivenss all drew me to her.  I just sort of assumed there was more under the surface than a violent nihilist with a foul mouth.  Besides, she shared my instant distaste for Miranda.

*****

And now comes the part of the post where I chime in on random crap from many pages back:

First off, literal crap.  I have to confess that the Tali-mocking picture linked to on page 170-ish (where she's on the toilet with the caption "It was totally worth it") amused me far more than my sophisticated side wants to admit.  (And believe me, I'm a philosophy major/English minor.  I know from sophisticated).  Maybe I'm just horribly naive when it comes to grossout comedy, but poop jokes at pretty women's expense always seem a smidge subversive to me.

Second...just so I can get it out of my system: Dem eyes!

Finally, as to Jack's musical taste, I am split.  Part of me says she is a punk rocker through and through.  Another part says she craves serenity not in her life, and is a folkie.  Maybe she splits the difference and grooves to 'Meat Puppets II' and Thurston Moore's 'Trees Outside the Academy."

I gathered after talking with the author that he wasn't a fan of the pairing either, but was writing the fanfic as a challenge to write the most bizarre pairing he could think of. Within reason, apparently, because I think Grunt/Jack would have been more bizarre.

Welcome, zvbrxrplfhgwhgads!

It's easy to throw Jack into the punk rocker, death metal, gangsta rap genre, but sometimes I do wonder where her musical tastes lie when she's not much for rage. I like Meat Puppets and Sonic Youth, but my own tastes lean more toward the progrock of Porcupine Tree and Kevin Moore, so it's easy for me to apply that to Jack.

But then I get into this mood of Jack rambling across the galaxy, so then I start thinking of even more folksie music like 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Which, incidentally, is the type of motorcycle that I think would appeal to Jack.

Yeah.  Grunt/Jack would be more bizarre.  They'd also probably both be seeing a lot of Dr. Chakwas...

Wow I'm surprised you went through all the old pages. I think it was me who posted that pic of Tali here :P. I saw someone post it in the Tali fan thread a long time ago, and it cracked me up, so I just had to share it with everyone here . It doesn't matter what your history or profession is (unless you're a hardcore Tali fan), that picture is damn funny.

Grunt and any non-Krogan would be an extremely bizarre couple. Now a friendship between Jack and Grunt would be fine, and I think likely.

Punk rock and death metal? Maybe. Rap? Hell no. I can't picture Jack ever liking rap. Well probably because I hate rap .

Hell, combine obsessive completism with a stomach flu that has me sitting at my laptop and bored, and I can plow through anything.  Honestly, it might have been my own situation that made the picture so funny.  And FWIW, I think Tali's adorable.  Still, funny's funny, man.

I think a lot of gangsta rap is too self-aggrandizing for Jack to not think it's bull.  I wonder what she'd think of some of the underground stuff.  I kind of like Aesop Rock, and I think lines of his like "I'll take a seat atop the brooklyn bridge with a coke and a bag of chips/to watch a thousand lemmings plummet just because the first one slipped," might appeal to her.

Well, they do say music calms the savage beast.

I'd have thought Jack might've been into industrial techno, or whatever else is blaring out on Omega. Oh heck, she could be one of those people who goes through these ADD-ish phases of flipping around music genres because she's easily bored. She could just be one of those sound effect nutters who listens to white static noise, ocean tides, ship engines or the buzz of florescent lighting. Or maybe she has actual musical taste and listens to old Quarian records.

No he hasn't. He's just a busy person. And instead of posting here he probably works on his fanfic. Which there's nothing wrong with that. Especially because his fanfic is so awesome :).

I always thought she would be into metal but now that think about it she probably would have a secret like for softer more lyrics based stuff. Honestly though, she's probably not into what by then would be very old music. Maybe that techno stuff that seems to be popular by ME's time.

Yeah, Uraniel's fic is probably the best Jack/Shep fanfiction out there. It seems like the only one that handles the relationship in a mature, realistic manner and does the pairing justice.

There was Blame, which was interesting enough that I could overlook the grammatical and formatting errors, but the author seems to have abandoned the story, so it's a bit of a dead end now. :? It's okay though, because IMHO, Urdaniel's story is much better. :D

I dunno, I have a hard time imagining all the ME-era electronica being all there is out there in the galaxy. Possibly because I know a lot of people (myself included) who just find synthetic beats, as opposed to actual drums, to just sound aesthetically off.

The sound team who worked on Mass Effect are toying with the idea of a OCremix album of some of the ME tracks. They had a twitter requesting ideas for character theme revamps in various styles. I of course asked for Jack's.

I disagree with your claims about "electronica", but that's irrelevant anyway.   I think the reason the electronic music seems to be so prevalent is because it sounds futuristic, and because it's a reasonable substitute for Bioware having to invent unique styles of music for each individual species.   We didn't even get to hear the Quarian mother's keening song in ME1, we just get told by text that we hear it.   It would be awesome if we could hear what each species' music sounds like.

Speaking of actual drums, still no word on the song that played during Jack's reveal trailer? The one with the heavy drum riff?

I'm not making claims about electronica.  (At least, I don't think I am).  I was trying to talk about a certain kind of musical taste.  I do realize that I should probably stick to talking about music I listen to, so I rescind whatever I said.

Electronic gets mentioned as possible musical favorites for a lot of characters because we tend to hear a lot of electronica in the game, it sounds futuristic, and if you mention any present-day songs, people tend to point out that it'll be two hundred years old and out of fashion by the events of the game. But Miranda listens to classical music. Who knows, Roger Waters might be deemed the Mozart of progrock in the future.

So anyway, since were are not in the future, all we can do is come up with analogs for what the characters might like to listen to. I think Legion appreciates a nice theramin tune. Jack learned to play the harmonica. Garrus secretly likes corporate manufactured boy bands. Grunt appreciates a nice joint and some steel drums to lessen the blood rage. Jacob had to invent excuses for his friends why he had to leave sports practice early because his mom made him take piano lessons. Quarians were excellent flautists, but it is becoming an endangered art due to their restrictive suit environment. Zaeed sold his soul to the devil so that he could play a mean guitar and get Jessie. Mordin gets stuck singing show tunes, but he really fancies himself an excellent rapper.
