Dev1: "A Jack/Femshep romance? But everyone will say that she's a stereotyped character!"
Dev2: "Yes, but the priiiize!"
Dev1: "You're fired"

That needs a strip, Ep :D

Panel 1

Title - Inside the BioWare Brainstorming Sessions
Sub-Title - Episode 377: Love in a Women's Prison

Several BioWare bods are sitting around a board table, scattered papers and handouts in front of them. At the head of the table sits a stern-looking 'Head-Honcho'.

Head-Honcho:
Right, point of discussion was the gender of Subject Zero... we had some feedback about making her bisexual last time...

Panel 2

Focus in on two BioWare bods: one looks pretty normal, the other like a bit of an as*hat with a stupid grin on his mug.

Joe Normal: A Jack\\Femshep romance? Come on, everyone'll say she's a complete stereotype then!

Barry A*shat: Yeah, but The Priiize!

Panel 3

Closeup of Barry A*shat, a startled expression on his face and a neat, bleeding hole in the middle of his forehead.

Sound - BLAM!

Panel 4

Panel showing the Head-Honcho, Barry and Joe. Joe has a shocked expression on his face, Barry is facedown on the desk, and the Head-Honcho is holding a smoking pistol.

Head-Honcho: Any other bright ideas?

Ok, joking aside, I've voiced my opinion on this one before now, but hey, I won't try to dictate terms to people. I'm personally glad she isn't depicted as bi in the game as it would be a merry dance into bisexual bad girl land and to me cheapen the character a little. I've nothing against bisexuality (believe me, I can't possibly ^_^ ) but I just think the depiction of bisexuals in mass-media has pre-tarred the brush in this case. Even if it was the finest depiction of such in the universe, it'd still be there grinning at me like a goblin. I'm not saying I'm hating on it, I'm just saying I perfer it the way it is. Jack may well have danced all over the park as far as sexual choices in her past, sure, but I like her het for now. It's just me I'm speaking for, so feel free to like your icecream any other flavour. That's all cool, and it won't ruin anything that makes Jack Jack.

Besides, this way she's an unconventional love interest; not a typical movie pinup girl, but to have her come out as the conventional, ruggedly-handsome hero's love that always ends up with the conventional hot gal... that pisses all over Hollywood's chips right there :D

I agree with Mondo.   There's something delightfully incongruous that results from a combination of non-traditional stereotypes producing something stereotypical, like a bunch of street racers/car ricers banding together in their efforts to produce a Model-T.

Additionally, it neither detracts from, or adds to, a character, to have him or her be straight, homosexual, or bisexual, in the very same way it neither adds to, nor detracts from, a character to have him or her have a defined (non-static) sexuality.

I can see where you're coming from Mondo, as Jack is far too nuanced a character to bear too many typical male shooter gamers snorting and going "It figures" to Jack's bisexuality, were she so. Ask any idiot misogynist teenage male gamer to spot the bisexual girl, and they'll automatically point to the one who looks like she could kick their ass. It's a sad state of affairs, but nevertheless true. Thing is, it might actually boost her popularity a little, but it would be a hollow victory, as said gamers would be going to it for the wrong reasons, and believe you me, there is nothing I can't stand more than flawed support for a position I hold dear.

And yet... Contrary to popular belief, lesbians play video games. And they would go into the Jack romance for the RIGHT reasons. Were I making the decisions, Jack is such a wonderful character that I could not find it in my heart or conscience to deny those lesbian gamers the right to put as much of themselves in the FemSheps romancing Jack as I, as a straight male gamer, have in my MaleShep. In short, Jack is awesome. If written well, a bisexual option for her should be viable. Everyone should have a shot at her.

If it can be written well, without making the player wonder about what Jack was talking about in ME2 when she says that she doesn't play for the "girls' team", then that would be great.

I am, however, sensing, again, that bit of arrogant self-entitlement (not from you, specifically) that can bubble up when one is denied something that one wants.

A lot of gamers really liked Wrex on their squad, but he was killed in the default game on Virmire. It looks like that he will be trying to unite the clans in ME3, and possibly strengthen the Krogan while being able to facilitate some sort of integral role with Shepard's alliance building that will be needed against the Reapers. Or at least this is the theory that I keep hearing.

Bioware should scrap that and make him a squadmate for ME3. That would only make more people happy. Why not? He should also be a bisexual LI option.

Grunt, Joker, Zaeed, Legion, Mordin, Kasumi, and EDI should be LI's in ME3. Bisexual Li's at that. This can only make more people happy. Why not? Samara should be a LI in ME3 also.

I have nick-named one of my friend's puppies "Jack".   This Jack doesn't take ****  from the other puppies.  This Jack is not "small", however; in fact, she's larger than the other puppies.   This Jack is tsundere for one of the male puppies.  This Jack even has the eyebrows.

JD, on this matter, we're mostly of the same mind, but I think you might be going a little far with the hyperbole/rhetoric.

Anyway, I can practically hear the dam failing as it tries to hold back the political furor, so maybe we should drop this topic for now.

"Top Secret!" is one of my favorite movies. LG needs to see the infamous Swedish in-reverse scene.

Royce, you're making a lot of good points, as is Mondo. I can't really contribute much, seeing as I'm still trying to figure out where I stand on all of what you guys say.

Johnny, I think you're underestimating the degree to which having gay/lesbian/bisexual characters in popular media is a genuinely significant move toward acceptance of actual gay/lesbian/bisexual people in society. Seriously.

I know I'm not one of the old guard here but I thought I would chime in on this. While I'm fine with new characters being bi or gay, it undermines the credibility of the character in my mind to change such a key component of their idenity as their sexuality after it has been established already. Granted, there is a little bit of room here provided by that one comment about boyfriends or girlfriends, so I could see some way to make Jack bisexual by saying she's developed feelings for Femshep over time. Still, it seems rather weak to me.

This would be the only situation in which I would be in favor of new LIs in ME3, include new gay/bi characters and everyone would be happy.

Disagreeing with someone about making Jack bisexual is one thing. Mocking them pisses me off.

No I am not.

Why don't we use them as a tool to advocate against violence, and remove any violent content from the game?

There are Bioware games with gay/lesbian/bisexual content in them right now.  One can play them.  Yet instead people want to change ME to meet their own wish fulfillment , and feel that they are entitled to that content.  If they are refused the content, they howl as if their rights are being violated, and that Bioware is somehow portraying sterotypes that are unhealthy, and against their personal beliefs.

I'll speak for myself;  and surely I never howled. I made my case on the page prior to the last, and I fail to see how I implied that I am "entitled" to anything.
I'm not saying Jack is less of a character because she isn't bisexual, I merely think the right execution wouldn't harm her established persona.

And I'm sorry if that comic somehow came off as mocking. That really wasn't my intention. It was just, I thought, a dry elaboration on my perception.

@ Drunken Pyromaniac: Eh. Established sexuality is less established than you think. Or maybe that's just a college thing. All I know is a graduating Senior I know just started expressing interest in girls on her last day of classes.

ZVBXRPL? I think I had that racehorse the last time I got my eyes tested :D

Zee is right there, though. It may sound a little trite coming off the tongue, but every time we get a good, positive LGBT character in the mass-media spotlight, it's a step forwards.

I made a fun little Motivational, and then realised how much bother it might cause after the last time, and yeah, I guess it is a little mean-spirited, so I made a less contentious one:
