So, I just finished Overlord not to long ago, and let me just say... wow. The ending was... disturbing. I won't spoil anything for those that have yet to play it, but I was little disappointed that your squadmates were silent the entire time (of course, getting 12 people to come back and record minuscule lines is probably more expensive than it's worth).

I had Jack in my party, and I'm pretty sure she would have the most to say about a situation like that. Yeesh. Ingame-wise, It seemed way to close to home for her to be so silent.

(In hindsight, I probably should have waited a day or two before posting this, as alot of people might not have played it yet. Feel free to ignore my ramblings.)

Yeah I was disapointed by the lack of squad banter but it was still worth it. And I was pleased with the ending it almost made me cry.

Shepard:  "What're you scowling at me for, sweet'ums?"

I can actually hear Meer's voice saying that in my head. This concerns me....
Jack's expression is priceless however.Image IPB

So Mondo's motivational got me thinking a while back when I was just lurking. What is the opinion of you guys on Jack's mental state? Do you think she's a true psychopath (I don't but I wouldn't be surprised if some do) or do you think she's just extremely traumatized by her life so far and thus has become cynical and nihilistic?
Edit: Hmm, that wasn't very well worded.

She obviously has SERIOUS trust issues, as you may have noticed through pursuing a relationship with her...
...She's a sane human being, she just doesn't have normal mental control like Shepard or any other human. She has approached sex casually before and approaches Shepard with the opportunity in ME2, and she sees using her biotics and strength as an easier way to deal with matters than talking things out.

This.

That's my opinion as well, it also has the advantage of making the romance more credible in that she isn't really mentally ill, just jaded and distrustful.
Sorry about my wording before, I'm usually at least somewhat coherent.Image IPB

The latter.  Psychopath just doesn't fit.  Jack has empathy, it's just buried under scars and mistrust.

Psychopath would imply that Jack has no empathy and conscience, or lack of it. I don't believe that this is the case with her. At least I am not willing to say that this is the case with what I have seen. Amoral conduct and violating social norms? Yes, but that in itself does not define a psychopath. Psychopaths also display a superficial personality at times. Jack doesn't seem to display a fake personality, she just works with what she has learned, and what has got her through her life.

As someone stated before, I'm sure Jack's heart was pounding a mile a minute when this happened in the DLC.

She doesn't fit the definitions from what I have read.  This has been discussed in this thread before.

I would disagree with some of the members here about her needing therapy though.   I do believe that if someone was to go through what Jack has been through, they would have psychological problems.  They would need extensive counseling and probably medication I would think.  Not necessarily hospitalized and under constant observation, but help nonetheless.

How could one go through all of that emotional and physical trauma from such a young age, and not have psychological issues?

Of course this game/story only goes so deep.  Speculation in these threads about the story and it's characters are a lot more complex that what the story actually is.  Jack receiving therapy/counseling for psychological issues, is a little too much for a video game.:P

The first step for Jack would be finding a group of people who genuinely care for her.  Shepard and the Normandy crew count.   Also, she lacks, uh, social graces, and probably farts and burps at the dinner table, but that doesn't need meds for changing (not that I think it needs changing.)

Pyschopath is a term used too loosely with common people. When the average person uses it they just mean someone whose behavior they find crazy and unstable.

But when it comes to the actual medical definition Jack just does not fit.

I do think she should get therapy. Not because she needs it, but because she deserves it.

I agree that finding a group that cares, is a step in the right direction.  I think her state goes beyond just lack of social graces though.  "Warm feelings from fighting", and believing that "one more dead person means a better chance of her survival" are more along the lines of what I was thinking.

Edit:  Of course it is a game.  In the context of what we have in this science fiction story, everything kind of goes out the window concerning in depth analysis.  Someone going through what she has gone through, doesn't happen in real life that I am aware of.  Biotics, eezo, and all of that stuff....it is similar to trying to figure out Alien biology.

Dunno if it helps but there is one taken from about three seconds later in the Zero Tolerance group. It has her mascara running though.

That's a great caption. Though when first playing that mission I wasn't paying attention and became quite confused with what was happening and what happened to Shepard. Did the AI try to possess him or was it deliberately sharing it's memories with Shepard (I think it's the former; curse my ADD).

Y'know, I noticed that in all screenshots and videos I've seen of the romance scene, Jack's mascara is running. Yet when I actually play the game, it's just normal tears that run down her face. Why is that?

Perhaps you have the graphics turned down or are running it on a computer with a graphics card not capable of displaying the running mascara. I know I can see it on the 360.
