Well, it seemed less a cult and more organized crime. To hear her tell it, they were using her in protection racketeering. "Fork over your cash or we'll have the bald girl break your face." Jack didn't like it, so she killed everyone in the cult.

Of course cults in general deal in some kind of extortion, but usually on their own members. Your money for enlightenment.

It was at this point I started liking Jack. Though she won't admit it or state it as such, she protected the innocent. She has morals she either won't cop to or doesn't know she has.

Jack knows she could crush Niftu Cal with the lift of a finger, but she allows herself to be amused by his...Volus-ness.

It's funny that we keep indirectly bringing up "Back to School", because I remember thinking Sam Kinison was hilarious in that movie, especially when he tears the desk from the floor.

I remember that also.  Talking about Vietnam and Korea.  Sam Kinison was a funny comedian.  I think Rodney Dangerfield played a big part in Sam getting noticed in his early days of comedy on those HBO specials.  Have you ever been to Dangerfield's in NYC?

Now that we were sorta on the topic of Jack's haircut, how about we speculate crap out of the cult she was in? Even if they did use her in the end, the cult meant enough to her to keep a tediously high-maintenance hairstyle. This isn't a matter of her looking cool or intimidating, I mean look at those overly precise patterns at the back of her head - that's gotta be a b!tch to get down right once let alone multiple times.

[Side note: My family owns a hair salon, we get customers now and then who love to be adventurous with their hair..]

I kinda liked the tiny bit of fuzz Jack had in her CGI trailer. Wouldn't mind if she grew an extra few millimeters of hair for ME3. Hair fuzz is awesome to run your hands through.

I hate the fuzz. It looks butchy. I like how it is in the game.

About those patterns shaved in, maybe she just thought it looked kool? It's seems contradictory to want to forget the bad things in your past, yet maintain a hairstyle with patterns associated to a cult that you were once a part of that you hated. Maybe the bad memories she has from when she was part of the cult just don't bug her enough to make her want to get rid of a haircut associated with them that she thinks looks kool (if that makes any sense).

Show people Jack's concept pictures where she has all of those funky hair-styles, and people start drooling over her.  Otherwise, they whine about how butchy she looks with a shaved head.

@york: HAHAHA~! Truth.

There's probably one or two things about the cult Jack never forgot about, or rather didn't let herself forget about. That sense of community maybe. She felt that way with the outlaw colony after all.

I agree that the idea that Jack will grow out her hair now that she's "better" is a bit of a shallow way to look at things, but Johnny already said that.

Besides, the shaved head looks good on her.

A shaved head matches Jack's cranial structure perfectly.  I'm no hair stylist, though, I'm only familiar with aesthetics as a conundrum of philosophy (cue the Engineer).

I guess the easiest way of looking at it would be comparing her hair to her tats, maybe its for something she lost or something she wants to remember.

I just got an automated e-mail response from the address I sent the e-mail to. I guess that address is no longer valid. I'll try Ms. Taylor's voice-over manager's e-mail tomorrow, then.

Let me just say that it never fails to amuse me to see pictures of Jack being posted on 4chan that have obviously been saved by people who either post here regularly, in this thread, or just pass through.  I can tell because I've saved these pictures myself, and the file names are all the same, never changed.

Of course the Internet Hate Machine has a soft spot for Jack.

Technically speaking, I doubt Bioware will change Jack's hair lenght in ME3 because:
1) they're trying to stay "iconic" i.e. in ME2 even Ashley was wearing her default (ridiculous) white and pink armor
2) it's unlikely to have a romanced Jack with long hair AND a non-romanced Jack with shaved head in ME3, it's a waste of resources
3) Jack looks better with shaved head
4) if you do not agree, the last thing you'll see is DEATH tattooed on the fist she'll use to smash your face

Really?  The last time I was on /v/ (Which admittedly was a few weeks ago), all the ME threads were either "Wrex.  Shepard." creepy Tali porn alternating with trolling, or just discussion of how awesome Garrus is.  I generally stay away from summer 4chan, though, so I might have missed stuff since May.  That's kind of cool, though.

Why in the world would you go to /v/ for video game discussion? /v/ is where you go to fight console wars.
Try /tg/. Those guys love Mass Effect.

The thing that always strikes me about Jack's little recounting of her time with the cult is her disappointment with it; not so much at being used (Jack by this point is fairly settled in the idea of being trafficked from here to there to break sh*t for grabnasty pukes that want her for one, maybe two things tops), but at finding it was all a fake. She boils her joining down to "sex, drugs and going to a better place" but it's the fact there was no 'better place' seems to be the root of her anger with it all. The fact that there would be no big reward, no paradise, no spaceship in the comet's tail to catch a ride on, seems to be the prime factor in her snuffing of the cult. Jack was looking for someplace that was better than everything she'd experienced thus far (and hell, anything would have been a step up from that), and finding it was no more than some cheap scam to pump a colony for money... being used, Jack can accept as the norm, but having her hopes erased, cue the truly terminal biotic lightshow.

Life just stacks all these disappointments and hurts on her, and as soon as the real thing comes along, Jack rationalizes it as being used, potentially a complete fabrication, and worst of all she thinks it's her fault it all goes to c*ck and the guy who actually does care about her gets offed by the squints. Another dollar goes in the Give Jack a Hug fund from me.

When the recording from Murtock played for Jack, what do we think her emotional reaction was to being told that he loved her?   As Mondo pointed out, Jack is rationalizing the pain of loss by telling herself that Murtock, too, was using her, when she knows that that wasn't the case.  What do we think her reaction would be if the word "love"  came up between her and Shepard?   To cite Mondo again, her "Walking After  You"  fanfic has her angry, and in tears.  "Walking After You"  presumably takes place during the events of ME2, though, or shortly afterward, but would her reaction be different if they had been together for a while?

EDIT:  Rephrased some stuff.

WAY happens during the hypothetical events of ME3 (Ash having joined Shepard & co to go fight the Reapers and Jack's reacting to Ash's interest in Shep - not that there was more than a brief flirtation between my fantasy-universe Shep and Ash in the ME1 timeframe). It's just another event in the whirlwind that is Jack & Shepard... until they both say "I love you" there'll be no peace, and even after that... I see it being a stormy romance, and perhaps one that won't last (so don't expect a happy ever after from me anytime soon). I've lived it, and because I love projecting onto Jack so much, it's the way I'll always see it.

So basically, all my little things take place post ME2, and onwards into ME3. I'll only write anything occuring post ME3 after the game... don't want to second-guess things too much ;)

Well, do you think Jack will ever be enduringly happy?  If this question is too personal to you because, as you say, you "love projecting on to Jack", feel free to ignore it.

EDIT: Added "enduringly", because that was what I originally meant.

Hmmm that's interesting. I figured almost everyone on 4chan would despise Jack.

That's a good point. But also, in an interview with Patrick Weekes, he said that they wouldn't give Jack a normal hairstyle because basically it would seem shallow. And they wanted each character to be unique and to appease to different personalities. So to make every human female look similar to Miranda would be counter-intuitive to that goal.

I think she was more frustrated with the fact that they didn't care about her. She says, "They didn't give one **** about me." And the way she said it implied that is what disappointed her most. They didn't care about her, they just used her. The whole "going to a better place" thing most likely had to do with, if you follow the ways of the cult, when you die you'll end up in some paradise. I don't think Jack cared too much about whether or not that was true. I think she just wanted to be with a group of people who cared about her and were not just trying to exploit her. And if that meant following their silly beliefs, then so be it.

As for Jack being happy. I think as long as she is with Shepard (or someone that genuinely cares about her), then she'll be happy. After them being together for a long time, if Shepard were to die or disappear, I'm not sure how Jack would handle the rest of her life. I don't think she would devolve into her old ways though.

Ask a Talimancer if the quarians will get the homeworld back. Ask a Miridian if Miranda will get a costume that doesn't belong on the fanservice shelf. Simple answer. Yes. She deserves it. It might not be what we want in our heart of hearts (or it might be) but I think one day Jack will get the sunset she deserves. The universe is cold, uncaring and unfeeling, but the many peoples that live in it aren't... so there's hope for it.

I'm a soppy swine, aren't I? ^_^

Don't make me post the "you get what you get. Deserve's got nothing to do with it" screencap. Damn, she's so damn right! And she definitely needs a paragon hug :-)

[humor]
How about starting a petition? No, better: a Paragon Hug DLC that lets you paragon hug everybody in the game. And a Thane poledancing minigame.
