All of this has the potential to be really emotionally powerful. It didn't work so well, frankly, but the core ideas were sound.

In general, the fact that ME2 was a darker game that left more loose ends than ME1 is entirely fitting for its status as the middle volume of the trilogy. That sort of thing is a successful strategy--Just look at "The Empire Strikes Back," "The Two Towers," or "The Dark Knight." I predict that once ME3 comes out, the opinion of ME2's story will generally go up, as it did with "The Empire Strikes Back." And this will be exactly the right reaction.

Let's hope that we are not saying "it didn't work so well, but the core ideas were sound", when ME3 is released.:P

They switched writing teams between 1 and 2, from what I understand.  That affected some continuity, and we got some retcon action going on there.  Like the Asari for example.

Overall, I like ME2.  At times, I have wanted more from the story and plot of ME2.  I have in the past, kinda felt like it was a little flat and maybe lacking a little.  It is the middle chapter though.  So if they can make it all come together in the 3rd installment, then that would be great.  I hope they pull it off.

It's disorienting to see young Ron Perlman (or Anjelica Huston, for that matter).

Did they really? I'm not sure if that's true. It seems very strange to change the writing team of a game that was so highly praised for it's story.

One/some of the writers from ME1 had other projects. If I recall correctly, one of them went on the The Old Republic project. Given ME2's shift from story to characters, for me it's easy to believe. I really appreciate the work they've done in ME2 in regards to the characters, you get unique characters like Jack. I like the whole ME2 squad, some more than others. (Morinth of course draws my dislike on the moral level). They will need to switch gears for ME3 though - the story needs to get resolved and resolved well.

I looked up the end credits for both games and all that's really different between the writing team is some new members and Mac Walters being promoted to Lead Writer for ME2. How involved the original team was with certain aspects of ME2's story remains a mystery however.

Mass Effect

Lead Writer
Drew Karpyshyn

Writers
Luke Kristjanson
Chris L’Etoile
Mac Walters
Patrick Weekes

Mass Effect 2

Lead Writers
Mac Walters
Drew Karpyshyn

Writers
Malcolm Azania
Chris Helper
Brian Kindregan
Luke Kristjanson
Chris L’Etoile
Jay Turner
Jay Watamaniuk
Patrick Weekes

The only knowledge I've gathered on who-did-what is that Patrick Weekes wrote both Tali and Mordin's character for ME2.

It has been discussed before if I remember correctly, it was a guy and he also appeared in an online interview, but I need to ask our Jackolytes expert for further details.

I thought that was just an interview with Patrick Weekes talking about he wasn't  a fan of Jack's character? I remember it clearly, at about page 130ish us Jackolytes were somehow misinformed that Mr. Weekes was Jack's writer. Then had our realities checked with this interview.

Unless you're refering to a completely different interview. Because if you are then nevermind. Just ignore me. :D

More proof Jack wasn't Weekes' favourite character. However, at the beginning of that topic, he mentions/implies that each character isn't done by just one writer.

I find it strange that he would so passionately dislike a major character (Jack). Usually the writers like all of the protoganist's teammates somewhat, but they don't usually dislike any of them. He said he's bad at writing anything emotional and that he couldn't write a character like Jack, which I found funny. He did cosplay as Jack though (no joke). I prefer not to repost that picture, and I suggest not looking for it. Patrick Weekes is a... larger fellow. And yes, he is wearing the belt bra.

When I thought Patrick Weekes was Jack's writer, I sent him a tweet saying I heard that he was Jack's writer and that he did an awesome job. Woops .

Edit: Damnit axl... You just had to post that picture didn't you? :P

There was another one where he was holding a gun in front of a giant poster. The one I posted was the one I haven't seen.

You're not Wrex.  That's a beautiful picture, though.   I love the detail on the textures of the headplates, as well as how the light falls on them.

Since we have been talking about plot and storyline, I'll upload my little Jack motivational that I made a while back. Regardless of what you think of the plot and storyline, the Jack fans know who the best character is in ME2. We know Jack is a success.:)

Exactly. If ME2 wasn't so focused on the squadmates, then Jack may have never existed.

Here we go again. New thread started about Jack's hair.

BigC-VI wrote...
Well I could simply see it because Shepard changes her life. It would be difining. It just popped into my head when Iw as reading up on her romance. But It hink it would be cool for her hair to be short, but cut right on the tatoos so you could still see them, but the tat's were still there. Maybe a ponytail or something. Idk, most likely, anything would probablly be dike-ish. (no offense to any heterosexuals, it would be confusing for a straight relationship)

I agree with you all on the plot, they tried something different with a side-character driven story.
But I must disagree with all of you on the RPG-elements, IMO they are what makes an RPG an RPG,
choices and being story driven alone don't make an RPG.

I was very disappointed with how they handled them in this game, and while they should not have gone back to ME1's system ( you should never gain inventory unless you pick up an item ),
I don't think they should have out-right  removed gun and squad-mate armor customization, reduce the amount skills and guns your teammates have and generally reduce the amount of options you have.

So I may be a whiny teenager, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't have an opinion.Image IPB
