Bioware:

Step 1) Insult JRPGs
Step 2) Create JRPG (DA2)

I'm no fan of DA, I'm no fan of JRPGs, either, and I'm certainly no fan of hypocrisy.

Wait a second. What gives you the idea that DA2 is like a JRPG?

Bioware criticizes JRPGs for being linear, for having pre-set protagonists, for having boring combat, for being unimaginative, all of that.  Then, they release information that DA2 will have a set protagonist, and will be borrowing elements from ME2, which some people criticize as being far too sprase and linear in its design and storytelling.

Having browsed the DA2 forums, a lot of this satire is spot on. It's almost hilarious how much people are demonizing the game. I heard one person who called Dragon Age 2's advertising "propaganda."

Some of the traits Bioware claims are common to JRPGs are present in their own games, even ME2, so it's not as if DA2 is the place to start when searching for these similarities. The hypocrisy didn't start with DA2, but, as another entry in what is amounting to a pattern, DA2 is stronger proof of the hypocrisy's existence.

Generally, I can't stand JRPGs.  I can count the number of JRPGs that I enjoy on one hand.

It was breathtaking to watch people froth at the mouth about DA2 on the same day it was announced.

I remember people frothing at the mouth about Jack when Subject Zero was introduced. Threads imploring that "it's not too late to take her out of ME2."

Luckily Bioware doesn't cave in to shallow opinions.

I have managed to be completely oblivious as to the reasons people are upset about DA2 and I frequent Bioware's own forums. All I know is that the announcement has led to displeasure, but I don't know why.

But anyway, I'm still going on my Grunt and Jack everywhere all the time playthrough with my Engineer. So far, they are the only thing providing me with any entertainment on this playthrough. I thought I'd like the Engineer more than this. I am the open-minded strategist, I am supposed to welcome every class with open arms. I have a sad.

Jack still dies a lot with that shotgun of hers, though.

Interesting the comparisons between Tali and Jack having just recently done a comparison of Tali and Miranda.

I don't view Tali and Jack in any way similar.... besides the fact that neither of them likes Cerberus.

I think it's a bit of a stretch as well. Their personalities are fundamentally different. Tali has much more in common with Miranda's personality than Jack's: that drive for perfection, the loyalty to the cause.

I also agree. However, that does not seem to stop most of the fans of Tali from also liking Jack. Part of it is, yes, because of Cerberus. I would also posit that the two characters are unorthodox. Miranda is much more of the "vanilla" LI, an Ice Queen that is standard fare in recent Bioware games. Tali and Jack on the other hand both have things that set them apart from the typical model.

There are also seems to be some truth in what York said, about their romances involving a certain degree of vulnerability. Another thing is that both of the characters are more easy to sympathize with and feel sorry for. Miranda's childhood wasn't the greatest, but for all intents and purposes, she has gotten over that and is a genetically "superior" human who will live a longer life than most, and will age much slower. Tali of course has the curse of her suit and the plight of her people, and Jack had a torturous & traumatic childhood that she hasn't fully moved on from yet.

I think I only have harsh things to say about looking at Tali or Jack with an eye toward vulnerability that would send me to destroy stars and crush quasars. This might only be tempered if someone writes an essay about the vulnerability of Kaidan, Garrus, Jacob, and Thane first.

Off-topic...whatever!

A definite highlight would be spending a couple of hours on the Great Wall pretty much by myself. Angkor Wat was also pretty amazing to see in person.

A definite lowlight would be catching some air conditioner-induced flu-like sickness for a few days in Bangkok (tied with being accosted by several transsexual prostitutes...also in Bangkok, of course). The whole Soi Cowboy thing was pretty distasteful, to be honest.

Any particularly bad scenarios to relate?

I was going to mention my story of being called a young chicken in a lascivious manner, but then I started getting images of Jack walking through Bangkok and the transsexual prostitutes and it should have been just a sad, sad story, but rather it make me chuckle.

I have no soul.

ETA: Wait a second.... you went to Thailand? How's that government instability working for them?

I love DA:O

Insanity, eh? Shotguns are completely useless except on like 2 occasions. I'm perfectly fine with all of them using a Carnifex the whole game. I think Jack likes to get close to use Shockwave, so she dies a lot for me. Her, Jacob, and Miranda all have a higher tendency to hop ontop of boxes with no cover, and I'm really good at directing my squaddies. I too have a hard time with Engineer. Lack of weapons, and having a Drone is so that you can shoot them with lots of guns, which you don't have.

Wait, what? You mean the Florence Nightingale effect? I feel sympathy for certain things in the character's story, but certainly don't have "an eye" towards it.

Basically, I JUST fell in love with the DA:O squaddies, and then found out they and my Warden aren't going to return.

Even though I can guess the context, that's hardly something to cause misery, laf... Surely you can top that!

Yeah, though, I only heard of the "political troubles" after I showed up in the country. It's funny, I asked a few people about it, and they were very quick to say that nothing was wrong... Can't say I saw anything to make me disagree during my week there (in the vein of instability, that is).

Jack walking down the Soi Cowboy. The street would run red, definitely.

Same here. I cannot understand the hate. Some people can never be pleased. I am so glad I am not like that. People need to relax, take a deep breath, and just enjoy the ****ing game, god damn.

Lack of weapons, and having a Drone is so that you can shoot them with lots of guns, which you don't have.

She hasn't done a lot of Miranda's jumping onto crates, but it really does have all to do with the combat AI directing her to close in on the enemy to shotgun range. I learned a long time ago to get my squadmates off the shotgun and onto any other weapon. Only Grunt can take it from the get-go. Jacob improves with the barrier that he so loves to use. Tali has the benefit of the Combat Drone and Energy Drain, but I have to be particularly mindful of controlling when she uses either if I'm going to keep her on the shotgun. I've always been rather down on Jack because I didn't feel she had any ability to pair up with the shotgun that would help increase her ability to survive on Hardcore/Insanity.

Turns out, if my character and the other squadmate are incredibly good at stripping powers, Jack will last longer. As an Engineer, I get the power of Overload and Incinerate. I've had Jack along with Miranda where I then get the benefit of Overload and Warp. If I concentrate on stripping powers, then Jack is great. But I don't want to have to keep stripping powers for her, that's no fun.

That's part of the problem I've been having as an Engineer because I've wanted to really use the Combat Drone to my advantage and get aggressive in the enemy's face, but I end up playing support for my squad in a way I didn't as a Sentinel or Adept -- two other classes that are often criticized as support that I played with a lot more aggression.

Somewhat. If I can write about it without somehow throwing in the phrase "save you with the power of my dick," then I'll know I'm trying to be reasonable in my critique. Right now, it'd probably just come across as undue rage.

I just use the save editor or a mod, and replace Jack's pistol with the SMG.

Since I just figured out how to use that with my 360 (What's in this box? Oh, that looks like a transfer cable for my XBox... wait... I've had a transfer cable for my XBox all this time?!), I should have thought of doing that sooner. Or hell, Revenants for everyone. If I can get Spectre gear for my crew in ME1, then surely the Illusive Man can dish out the good stuff.
