I'm sorry, I just instantly thought of Jack as Rafiki once I saw this. Anyway, like the detail of Tattoos.

Jack must have really gone soft with motherhood. That child is hardly out of her hands.

I like how, in the chibi version, she's sticking out her tongue and has one eyebrow raised.  It's adorable.  I just wish I knew the artist.

Love the pic, where did you find it?

Also, the only word I'm not ashamed of knowing is chibi. Just because chibis are adorable. Everything else makes me want to ritually cleanse my brain with a cheese grater. Teh internets is a strange netherworld (that is apparently destroying our brains). Curse you Otaku!

Shepard catches Jack's eye across the mess hall, smiles at her. She smiles back - then suddenly realises what she's done.

Jack: Hey, don't get any ideas! I ain't smilin' at you, Shepard. I'm... smilin' 'cause... the... cheerleader fell over.

Jack promptly shoves Miranda on the deck.

Jack: It's nothing to do with you! F*ck off, Shepard! Leave me alone.

Jack storms off, blushing furiously.

Miranda: (from the floor) Can someone please explain what happened there?

Tsun-tsun enough for ya? :D

I approve of this.  It's a good thing Jack's hair isn't long enough to be dyed some fluorescent color.  She has big eyes, though.  If she owns a schoolgirl outfit, she probably doesn't wear it to make herself look kawaii uguu~.

Well I'll be honest and confess to not noticing the post

But, now I've read it, I've got to say I like it. I liked Grunt's attitude towards biotics particularly ("magic"), very suitable for krogan. I'd like to see more too!

Meanwhile, below Engineering...

Jack lies on her cot, eyes closed, one hand under her pillow. Her breathing is slow and steady. The only sound beyond the gentle sigh of her breath is the background thrum of the ship itself. A few feet away from where she lies lies a datapad. It gently rises into the air and hovers a few feet from the ground. Its screen begins to scroll, as though being read.

Jack: (eyes still closed) Good read?

The datapad suddenly stops scrolling.

Jack: You should know I have a gun. You can still walk outta here provided my eyes are closed. Once they open, though...

Kasumi: What makes you think you can hit what you can't see?

Jack: Maybe I get lucky, maybe I don't, but you can't run far on a ship.

Kasumi: That's true. Maybe it's best we resolve this now, then?

Jack: F*ck. And I thought you were smart...

Jack eyes flick open. She suddenly sits upright in a single, smooth movement, gun pointed directly at the datapad.

Jack: Well, my eyes are open now.

Kasumi: Indeed they are. You should probably take your shot now. If you miss with the first one...

Jack: (smirking) Who say's I'll miss?

Kasumi:
Better pull the trigger and find out.

Jack:
Your funeral.

Jack pulls the trigger. The pistol fizzes and a heat warning light blinks on in the display. Frustrated, Jack pulls the trigger again, and again. She ejects the clip - it now reads zero capacitance.

Jack: How the f*ck...

Kasumi flickers into being, her stealth-field fluttering off. She stands with the datapad held at arms-length to her side - Jack would most likely have missed. She removes a thermal clip from her belt and tosses it to Jack.

Kasumi:
It's a fault with the charge meter on Elanus Risk Control firearms. You smear a little capacitance gel on the contacts of an empty clip, the gun reads it as ready to use. Your ammo block isn't able to load, either... it's the wrong way around. Sorry, I took the liberty of giving myself some insurance while you were asleep four hours ago. You did well to lie still for so long... I'd love to know what gave me away. Sleeping people move more, though.

Jack scowls and breaks the gun open - the ammo block is inserted incorrectly. She curses, reverses the block and slams in the functional heat sink angrily. She looks up to find Kasumi is now sat on a crate opposite her cot.

Kasumi: Hey, don't feel too bad about it. You just learned something about your defenses. I won't be able to do that again.

Jack:
(angrily) Too f*cking right. What the hell do you want?

Kasumi:
I just wondered why you're sleeping down here.

Jack:
I thought this was a good place to avoid people sticking their noses in my sh*t. Seems I got that wrong.

Kasumi:
Sorry, it's force of habit. Besides, I was curious about you...

Jack:
(terse) Why? You wanna f*ck or something?

Kasumi: Don't misunderstand me; you're cute, but I don't swing that way.

Jack: Good. Neither do I. And I already have Shepard pulling this sh*t on me, so I don't need you doing it too, ok?

Kasumi: He is a very interesting man... I've not seen anyone like him fight before. And yet he has such a gentle, kind heart. A romantic warrior. Very rare combination these days.

Jack:
How do you know? Stand in the corner of his room too?

Kasumi:
(chuckling) Oh no! Nothing like that. He comes to talk to me from time to time.

Jack:
(bluntly) Oh.

Kasumi: As handsome as he is, I think I've got competition I can't beat there. Besides, there are other men on this ship that look like good options for a girl looking for a little fun. Have you seen the lines on Mr Taylor? I'm willing to bet he looks sensational out of that uniform.

Jack: Hey, you want to go play with the Cerberus puppet, be my guest.

Kasumi:
(teasing) As long as I stay away from the Commander?

Jack:
You are really starting to ****** me off...

Kasumi: And that's why I wondered why you sleep down here. I'm sure there's somewhere else you'd like to be.

Jack scowls at Kasumi for a while, then her face sinks into a simple, sullen frown.

Jack:
It's not that easy.

Kasumi:
Why? He talks about you all the time, you know? He wants you, you want him...

Jack: I've told Shepard things I've not told anyone. I've tried to show him the warning signs but he just... just f*ckin' ignores them! If he just wanted to screw around I could just scratch this itch and be done with him, but no - he comes down here and lays all these feelings on me and... and I don't know how to react to that sh*t! I don't know if he's playing me -

Kasumi: If there's one thing Shepard wouldn't do, it's play you.

Jack:
And there's already someone in his life, anyway!

Kasumi: Who?

Jack:
I dunno... some chick we ran into back on that colony the Collectors tore up. Old girlfriend. She got all cut up in front of us all, about Shepard being with Cerberus, and... you could see how much it hurt him.

Kasumi: Feelings linger. Doesn't mean they can't change. I was in love with someone once, he's gone now, but it doesn't mean my life ended too. I still care about him, but I can still look at Jacob and try and think of a way to get him out of his armour. You know?

Jack: That's just sex.

Kasumi:
Who says? It might not be. You can't be sure until you try.

Jack:
I... I don't want to get involved! If I get attached to Shepard, everything will just get totally f*cked. Him, me, his mission. Everything. I'm not worth it.

Kasumi: You might think that, but Shepard certainly doesn't.

Jack:
(sighing) That's what he says...

Kasumi: Then maybe you should go out on a limb and see. Hey, we might all be dead tomorrow. Shepard says he's going to reactivate that Geth unit he brought on board, so I'm definately going to sleep in an escape pod of a couple of days, just in case.

Jack: It's one Geth. What can it do?

Kasumi: That's the unknown for you. I like to know as much as I can before I go out on a limb. I was pretty sure you wouldn't shoot me if I talked to you, but I don't take chances. If you know Shepard likes you too, what's to lose?

Jack: (doubtful) Maybe everything.

Kasumi: For all your scary looks and attitude, I can see what Shepard sees now - you really are adorable, Jack. I'd take that chance though. You know, before it's too late. Having someone care about you... it's not a weakness. It makes you stronger, actually.

Jack: If you say so.

Kasumi: I'm not the only one that does.

Kasumi turns to leave, then stops.

Kasumi:
You talk in your sleep by the way. Makes keeping secrets pretty hard, Jack.

Jack hisses and hurls a datapad as Kasumi.

I'm finding this Kasumi/Jack friendship fascinating. Usually people show Samara being the mentor figure to Jack or have Jack hanging out with Grunt. Kasumi strikes me as the sort who forces friendship whether you want it or not, and she always ends up succeeding.

I think it's exactly that - if Kasumi wants to know about you, she does - regardless of what you want. It'll either come off as potentially enticing or extremely irritating. I've a funny feeling if she actually chased Jacob, he'd not run away that fast, you know? As for Jack... I think after Shep has talked about her for a while, it'd be a foregone conclusion that she'd want to know what was so interesting about the foulmouthed grouch in the basement. Shep is, after all, a pretty reasonable judge of character most of the time... I think Kasumi would, like a vault, safe or security system, want to know how to crack a person like Jack, to understand how they worked. I think she's probably very catlike; winds around your legs and irritates the hell out of you until you sit down and let her perch in your lap.

Plus I wanted to show Jack still has some teeth and I hadn't removed them all - hence the little standoff with the gun. Gave me a chance to show Kasumi has very different smarts to Jack (and potentially anyone else on the ship).

That's her Kasuming Direct Control. /incredibly lame pun

It's true though, there is something about Kasumi's character that's impossible to hate. Though I wonder where you got Samara as a mentor figure. Though I like the sound of it, I haven't seen that often portrayed, if ever. Samara and Jack don't seem like the types to get along, they'd probably go out of their way to give each other space.

I'm having trouble imagining what a conversation between them would be like actually.
