I think I'll have to do a blazing row one of these days... but so far I'm making a list: I want to do something with Jack and Tali discussing Shepard; Tali's feelings for him, Jack being attracted to him, and Shepard seeming to return her interest... something to give them a bit more common ground (though the moniker of 'Fishbowl' is staying for keeps now :D). I want to do something with Jack and Grunt; perhaps something with a little humour, like a sparring session that gets increasingly OTT. I've got this very slender idea for Kasumi playing an extremely unwanted 'big sis' for Jack when she makes a fledgling attempt to make a pass at Shepard... and I have this image in my head of Garrus and Thane having this increasingly dull conversation about firearms while Jack sits behind them and makes sarcastic comments. Plus I'd like to revisit that conversation between Jack and Zaeed about mercs.

Well damn, youve got your work cut out for you. I look forward to all of it Image IPB

I think I should thank ElectricZ for making me think of this little scene, plus everyone seems to want Grunt and Jack to be such good friends... ;)

The Normandy Medical Bay, 18:44 Standard Operational Hours...

Shepard charges into the medical unit. The scene that faces him is something he couldn't have expected. Grunt is perched on the edge of one of the cots on the far side of the bay; one side of his face is plastered with medi-gel, most of it troweled into a huge gouge that runs from below his left eye to beyond the side of his mouth. One shoulder has a gel applicator attached to a harness to deal with some subcutanial injury. Perhaps most dramatic though is his right leg; locked inside a framework of dermal pins and gel applicators. Grunt smiles and hauls himself to his feet as Shepard enters. On the other side of the unit, however, is a much more serious story. Dr Chakwas is leaning over a patient lying in one of the beds. Several medical devices are obscuring Shepard's view. Shepard goes over to the doctor, takes one look at the patient and winces.

Dr Chakwas: (soothing) Don't worry, Commander... it's not as bad as it looks. He has a fractured leg, a couple of broken ribs, a lot of tissue damage - all pretty superficial for a krogan - and some minor internal haemorhaging. She's got a broken arm, fractured hip, dislocated shoulder, nine broken ribs, one punctured lung we've reinflated, one of her hands is broken in a dozen places, she has a fractured cheekbone and a broken nose. Nothing life-threatening, it's just messy. He'll walk out of here in the morning, she'll be fine in a few days.

Shep: What the...

Shepard quickly turns to Grunt. Grunt seems a mite taken aback at the look in his battlemaster's eyes.

Shep: What the hell happened down there, Grunt? This is worse than when we went through the relay! I thought that planet was uninhabited?

Grunt: It isn't inhabited. We found nothing but the shuttle wreck and the beacon.

Shep: Then how did this happen?

Grunt:
We...

Dr Chakwas: Commander -

Shepard turns back to the doctor. The bedbound patient is weakly trying to wave Shepard over. Shepard moves back and stoops to hear them speak.

Jack: Not his... fault.

Shep: Ok, Jack. I get it, don't try to talk. Just rest.

Jack:
(pained) No... you don't. Not Grunt's fault... mine.

Jack tries to haul herself into a seated position. Her face is a distorted mess; nose broken, one eye swollen shut, the other almost as bad. Her bottom lip is split and about twice its normal size and there are a couple of deep cuts across her scalp. Her face knots into a agonized grimace as she tries to move. Dr Chakwas tries to restrain her.

Dr Chakwas: (speaking rapidly) Jack, you have broken ribs and a punctured lung you really should not be... or, you can just sit up and force me to try and patch this all up again.

Jack:
(gasping) Sorry. Doc.

Shepard:
Take it easy, ok? I won't blame Grunt. Just tell me what happened...

Jack grins, her teeth tinted pink.

Jack:
We had a fight.

Shep:
You... what?

Grunt: We found the beacon, secured it at the landing zone. The Kodiak wasn't going to return for an hour...

Jack:
So we thought we'd pass the time.

Shep:
(incredulous) By having a fight?

Grunt: Sparring.

Shep:
(angrily gesturing at Jack) Does this look like sparring?

Jack makes a nasty wheezing noise that might just be laughter.

Jack:
Had worse. Your boy's a p*ssy...

Grunt snorts with amusement.

Shep:
This isn't funny! How did you end up in this state from sparring?

Grunt:
She fights dirty.

Jack coughs and spits in her attempts to laugh.

Jack: Ahf*ckithurts... he's right, though. I do.

Shep: I want to know exactly how this happened, right now.

Grunt gestures at his face and shoulder.

Grunt: Well, we started with basic unarmed combat. I told Jack to try harder, her strikes would have embarassed krogan children...

Jack: So I hit him with a support beam.

Grunt:
Yes! It was a sign she understood!

Jack:
I was... holding back my biotics. Didn't want to mess him up. So I cut loose.

Jack breaks into a coughing fit. Shepard points to Grunt's face.

Shep:
How did that happen, then?

Grunt:
Uh... a crate? Or was that the rock?

Jack:
Managed to knock him... off his feet. So, I hit him with a rock... couple o' times.

Grunt:
(giddy) Seven times! I felt every blow!

Jack: And I... I threw a crate at him.

Grunt: (excited) Came right though the air and sliced open my face! So fast I barely saw it!

Shep:
How did Jack end up in this state then?

Grunt: She was fast, avoided all my charges, but she tripped on debris and I finally managed to get her!

Grunt slams his fists together for emphasis. Dr Chakwas closes her eyes and gives her head a little shake.

Shep: Grunt, she isn't krogan! You could have killed her!

Grunt: She fights like a krogan. Even hurt, she got back up and kept fighting. Every punch, every kick after that, I felt in my bones. Jack is truly a worthy opponent.

Shepard looks back at Jack, his expression pained. He rests his hand delicately on Jack's ruined one.

Shep:
Christ, I could kill you... did you break this on his thick skull?

Jack: Nah... clumsy f*cker stood on it.

Grunt: A warrior does not apologise for his actions. But that was... unintentional

Jack: Ah... an' then he threw me at a tree. Legs went funny.

Grunt:
Oh! This is the best part!

Jack: So I... I...

Jack coughs violently, so much so everyone flinches, even Grunt. His enthusiasm returns in a moment.

Grunt: She charged her biotics and hit part of the shuttle wreck - half of it flew at me, twenty feet across the clearing and hit me in the leg! She brought me down, Shepard!

Grunt punches his good leg for good measure.

Shep: (rubbing his eyes) So then what happened?

Grunt: We just lay there for a while... then we waited for the shuttle to come back.

Shepard, for once in his career, is completely lost for words.

Dr Chakwas: I think we can just all be glad no-one was killed in this foolish little display of bravado.

Shep: I think I need a drink... I can't let you two go anywhere, can I? Next time you ask to do something Jack, I'm sending you with Miranda. I should confine your ass to quarters! Grunt... you should know better. You could have killed her.

Grunt: No, not unless I was in the grip of bloodrage. Jack is part of my krant, and a powerful one. A match for any krogan worthy of the name. You should be proud, Shepard! She is the only human I've met who comes close to your skill. She will bear you strong children -

Jack:
(wheezing) Whoa! Don't get any... ideas, Shepard!

Shepard, despite himself, finds himself blushing. Dr Chakwas tries to hold back her amusement. Grunt limps around the side of Jack's cot, and the two bump fists as best they can.

Jack: You're still a p*ssy...

Grunt: Hah! We should spar again, once you are healed.

Shepard looks at both of them and gives them a stare that would stop an elephant mid-charge.

Shep: (very firmly) You do that, I'm throwing both of you out the airlock, understand?

That would be cute.

Sometimes I wonder why we Jackolytes don't have a list of what we think is the significance of each of Jack's tattoos.  The Samaratans have a list of what we think some of the Sutras of the Code are, even though it's entirely speculative, and just based upon what we can glean from interactions with Samara.

It is rather interesting that the default assumption around here seems to be Jack and Grunt being friends. Not just warriors with a hefty respect for each other, but actual friends. I still think Jack likes the good fight, likes that euphoric reaction to it. And we know how Grunt feels about a good fight. Think Grunt would especially like to test his skills against biotics since it's a talent he lacks.

Also think it'd be a common gut reaction for humans to fear a krogan. They're supposed to be over 7 feet. They're 3 feet wide. Their hands are like claws. They want to fight. If you're just, say, the crewman handling navigation systems, would you stand next to a krogan and not ****** yourself? But Jack's past any of that gut reaction to the point where she simply sees a krogan as an equal. That has to be somewhat of a refreshing reaction for a krogan to experience.

Well, Tali's 'Fishbowl' ;)

I'm really not sure about that... though I can imagine her calling Samara 'Blue' or even 'Gramma', just to be a little cheeky. I can hear her calling Joker a gimp too. Legion could be 'Tinman'... I tend to imagine her using general epithets over names though... Zaeed being 'that old bastard', Miranda being 'the cheerleader' or 'princess' etc. Racial epithets aren't out of the way either... considering Jack taught us the wonderful term 'squint'.

That's a tough one... never really gave it much thought before I wrote the first Jack/Tali scene. I'll have to think on it.

Samara is: Grandma Smurf.
Jacob is: "SurPrize".
Morinth is: Sllut OR Skank.

Edit: I know there are two "L"'s and that it is only spelled with one... but they do the whole censorship when you type ****.

The fic seems to be in character for both of them Mondo.  Nice little story.;)

But this^ umm...I don't know, it seems a bit exaggerated.  Grunt is probably 400lbs at least, and wearing armor, and I imagine Krogan skin is very tough and hard to penetrate or give any, concerning blows to the body.  Especially punches and kicks coming from a ~100lb human.  Those blows would have to be on exposed areas of Grunts body, and there isn't much of his body exposed.  Even if he wasn't wearing the armor, I don't think it would phase him.  I can't hardly imagine Jack kicking and/or punching Grunt, and Grunt hardly being affected by it.

Unless of course, these are somehow biotically charged punches and kicks.  But she doesn't have that power though, I don't think.

I'm assuming Jack's kicks and punches were biotically reinforced, like when she took down those three ymir mechs.

But anyway, that was really good Mondo Image IPB. One thing that's so great about Grunt is just how much he loves to fight. He could get both his arms severed in a fight and still get all giddy when telling someone about it. I'm a big fan of Grunt/Jack fanfics. I think they'd get a long real well.

She does use biotics-charged punches to destroy those YMIR-Mechs, as others have mentioned.  Also, Gillian Grayson can lift a six-ton fork-lift with her biotics, and Jack is supposed to be stronger than she is, so, that's something to consider.

There were three YMIR-Mechs, though, yeah? Cutscene theatrics aside, she probably destroyed one with a punch, then the explosion destroyed the other two.
