Funny thing, I just picked that name at random, like, "What's a name that somebody would call Shepard, that sounds kinda generic and a little goofy?" It was either that one or "Walter."

Granted it's a bit of a stodgy name, but it actually means "ruler of the army"; "Walt" sounds a bit less goofy...

Yeah, it is... Proteus is an interesting machine overlord; on one hand he refuses to create an oceanic mining system because of the enviromental damage it will cause, while on the other it happily threatens and intimidates Julie Christie into playing doctor with it so it can knock her up, then it gives her possibly the most romantic gift imaginable (post-rape guilt in a machine?) - it hijacks a bunch of telescopes and amps them up to the nth degree just to show her a planet no other living creature has ever seen (it even hints at being able to call people out there if she asks it to). It's old-school ambiguous sci-fi like Silent Running and Soylent Green, only seriously dark; what if man made a God, and it wanted you to be its wife (hint: no is not a potential answer)?

And the end is pretty damn nasty (or fun depending on your sensibilities) ^_^

Oh Lordamercy... we're getting a bit Tali-thread-ish in here! ;)

As long as we don't make posts telling everyone we are going to bed, I think a little offtopicness won't hurt too much Posted Image.

But here's a pic of Jack about to pop a cap in someone's ass.

Heh, I posted about this on the Easter Egg thread, but I thought I would outsmart the game on this one.  There's that one ad for a biotic amp on the Citadel that somehow knows who you're macking on and makes reference to them.  I thought, "Oooh, maybe this will tell me for sure that her name is Jack, or what it might have been."

And then the ad says, "...when you're out for a night on the town with ERROR: CITIZEN ID NOT FOUND..."

Well, played, BioWare.  Well played.

Wow you Bioware people are smart :D

Talking about the "Miranda/Jack are sisters" speculation... please no! But it would be funny to see their reactions when they find out that.

I seriously doubt Miranda and Jack are sisters or both share some genetics or anything. That would be so cliche if they are bitter rivals only to find out they are related later on in the story.

They don't have to share the same genetics (obviously they don't). I'm sure Miranda's dad has a lot more available to him than just the genetics that make up Miranda.

I still do not think they have any connection at all or at least I hope Bioware does not do that. It would just be so cliche. Heck it would ruin both characters for me the bitter rivals turn out to both be made by the same man to reunite years later. I guess anything is possible but I doubt it personally.

Like everyone keeps saying, anything's possible with the whole Jack/Miranda thing. We'll just have to see where the writers lead us in the end. I'd prefer it if they weren't, personally, but if they were to have some kind of connection, it'd be neat if say Jack was tankbred (for want of a better term), and the science that made her was what was picked up by Miranda's father and used to make his batches of daughters... so she'd kinda be an older sister of sorts in a crazy, serial-numbers kind of way. Better than them actually being related, which would cheapen both their stories. Plus the arguments about who was better would be amusing descents into vehicle analogies...

Miranda: I was improved constantly after your inception. I'm superior in every facet of design... sleek curves, extra comfort... bigger headlamps...

Jack: Whatever. What do you get with her? Better fuel economy and rear airbags? Did the doctors throw your daddy a toaster in with you? Face it, sweetheart. I'm the original model...

Miranda: Well there's no arguing about how fast and cheap you are...

Jack: Shepard likes fast...

Miranda: Men like anything with bucket seats...

Shep: Hey! I'm standing right here!

I'm not saying I prefer them being connected somehow, I just think it would be really interesting to see their reactions. But I'm saying they could be created from the same guy (Miranda's dad) and their genetics could be totally different. Like Jack was made with the intention of having significantly superior biotics, not to be all around superior like Miranda is supposed to be. So I don't think they would argue over who is better since they were both created to serve different roles.

Ya this seems apply to a lot of people. At first they dislike Jack, and as you talk to her and get you know her you begin to like her. And then she completely wins you over when she gets all emotional during her romance plot conversations. Such a great character, so much depth that is not apparent at first, which I think shows just how great BioWare's writers are.

Personally I never disliked her. At first I just didn't care for her, especially when she called me a **** the first time we met lol. But after doing her loyalty mission and seeing her show emotion, I was hooked. And then after talking to her a few times I knew she was my favorite character. And I personally think she has the best romance plot by far out of any of the squadmates.

I'm afraid I must cop to having Stornskar's opinion before I played the game.  The footage of her just turned me off.  In fact, I remember laughing loudly at the following foul-language peppered article...

http://www.something...railer-dark.php

I think people still have that Godawful character reveal video still in their head, causing erroneous preconceptions resulting in dismissing the work that was done on Jack or just ignoring it altogether.  But more often than not with BioWare, the characters that are made the least fuss about before the games come out usually wind up becoming the most popular (and yes, Tali and Mordin, I AM looking at you).

In fact, I think were Jack not revealed at all no one would have had any preconceptions and this thread would be huge.  At least that's my take.

Yeah, I remember everybody FREAKING the hell out over that video. How they not only hated her character, but how BioWare were RUINING Mass Effect 2 by trying to get too dark and edgy.  Of course, we were still stinging from "ARE YOU MOTHERF***ERS READY... FOR THE NEW S***," so I can see where there might have been concerns.

But there were still people who expressed sanity, like, "This is only, like, a minute of footage.  The whole point of these trailers is to get people interested in the game, and we're only seeing the tiniest of fractions of this character's personality."  But no, the freakout continued, although the "Fight for the Lost" thing kinda cooled them down a bit.

Incidentally, I'm still pissed at BioWare for one thing.  When the Blur video (or whatever that big CGI trailer was called, I forget now) came out and they made this big deal of hiding SuZe (as we called her at the time) in the smoke, I pretty much accurately guessed what was going on: We had also discovered the name "Jack" at that point, and people were going off on weird tangents like either "Jack must be another character, and Subject Zero is someone else" or "So, you think Jack is a transsexual?"

But I knew.  We were just going to find out the name Jack before we went in to pick up our convict, and have the big reveal where "Jack... is smaller than we thought."  And they made the Blur trailer with that revelation in mind.  But then some marketing head was like, "No, we need to show off this character!" and made the character reveal.  And although they tried to obscure it by naming her "Subject Zero" within her character trailers, I knew we had just gotten spoiled.

P.S. Oh, hey, found my original post on the subject back in the day.  One of the few times I actually posted back on the old forums (was more of a lurker then): Eighth and ninth post down.  Yeah, I was somewhat off on the actual events and the whole "Jackie" thing, but the rest was pretty accurate.

Ah, The Blur trailer. Remember the huge man-hands they put on Jack to try and throw us all off?

I mean, I knew where they all came from (as I came from the same place), but a little introspection was in order. I mean BioWare hadn't let me down up to that point, and they're one of the few artistic entities out there in any medium where I personally will give the benefit of the doubt

But reading through that thread you posted, Irish, it's nice to know that the BioWare threads are a whole lot less terrifying than they used to be.

Wow... Never thought I'd say that...

As bad as things are now, just remember: there was a time when Tali fans didn't know there was going to be a romance with her, AND a time when BioWare were keeping it under their hats that Garrus was coming back.

Sometimes, I think they just like toying with people. :P

That's a very good point and I agree. Damn you BioWare! They have had some pretty crappy advertisements. Like all of those videos where a squadmate says why they're fighting for Shepard, and it shows the CGI version of them that looks really ****ty and nothing like the actually in-game character.

Of course the only way to fix this in ME3 is not to reveal anyone.  But of course, this forum would collapse in upon itself and people would be forced to trust their own judgments as opposed to mentally piggybacking on a piece of advertisement crapped out by someone too old and too lame to be playing this game.

"Tattoos and swearing!  Kids like that, right?  I DEMAND A CHARACTER REVEAL!  MAKE IT SO!"

But I suppose I should be grateful for small favors, like meaningful discussion here as opposed to "JACK ARE HAWT!" and my IQ dropping five points with every outlandishly proportioned hentai pic, painfully earnest declaration of love and bisecondly update on when everyone on the thread is going to sleep.

I dig this little Tigris and Euphrates of Cool we have set up.  But a little less suspense on whether or not the most fascinating and layered character I've ever seen in a video game is coming back for the sequel because some EA ad-man with a six digit income and a two digit IQ who thinks he's Don Draper dropped the ball?  That'd be great too.

I hope that they reveal very little for ME3 before releasing it. I always wonder how surprised I would have been on my first playthrough if I didn't know all the stuff I knew about the game. I know I don't have to look at it but it's so hard to resist!

I liked Jack. I think she had one of the best romance scenes ever. Seeing her walls come tumbling down like that was really touching and her emotion was so palpable.

I have a question though. I just discovered that Jack is basically dying. Why isn't there a save Jack support group or something like there is with Thane?

Ya we've discussed this a few times and most people believe that all biotics suffer from some type of neural degeneration, and it generally leads to a decrease in their biotic abilities. But with Jack her biotics are actually increasing. It's normal for all biotics. So I don't think it's anyting to worry about, it's probably a very late long term problem.

Ah, I see. Well, that's reassuring then. I would really hate for Jack to be written off as another tragic martyr for the cause or something. Her character has so much potential in ME3 and I really hope Bioware does her justice. Though I have every faith that they will.

Nothing against the other threads, but I check into them every so often, and it's the most pointless stuff.  (Well, yeah, pretty much EVERYTHING we write on this forum is pointless, but... shut up!)  I always like seeing that there's new posts in this thread, because it's probably going to be ABOUT something, and not just a bunch of blather.  Some threads, I've even seen them saying things like, "Hey, you guys!  Last night this other character thread gained on us!  We need to post more useless crap to pad OUR count!"

I mean, hell, I'm up late enough that I could keep posting one-line responses all night long, but I'd rather our thread stay focused, on-topic, and somewhat thoughtful, than try to be in some kind of competition.  The benefit of liking a character with a more selective fanbase, I suppose.

Ya I have faith in BioWare. And after watching some interviews and videos, she appears to be a dev favorite, and they understand how much depth she has and that she has a lot of potential for ME3. Plus it would be kind of lame if BioWare killed off two characters in ME3 with some terminal sickness.

It seems the gripe-du-jour about Jack at the moment is that her costume (pre-loyalty) screams of a lack of self respect... it goes along with that overt sexuality and bat**** craziness and amoral behaviour and...

Someone please give that old monkey on the organ a break... he's going to keel over and die if you keep working him like that.

Jack is a vulnerable character. She is the ruin she is because of her past. She wears it in her visual armour of tattoos, and her psychological armour of attitude and aggression. Having her boobs out on display is a facet of that projection; it's a challenge to others. Not for the people that would desire it, but those that don't. The rest can be read as a survival mechanism, but not the admittedly odd nipple-halter (that's my official name for it now :D that thing really can't be comfortable...). If she looked less like a half-starved teenage boy, you could argue it as a lack of self-respect maybe, but Jack is, you have to confess, very much in a niche as far as potential sex objects go. The ascant looks, the mutters behind hands in polite society, they all are what it's done for. It's not because she has no self-respect, it's because she wants to get that reaction. It's because she doesn't care what the norms think. She wants that, because she wants society at arms length. And these kinds of reactions from gamers show it's working in spades. Bravo design team - completely topless would have been even better... imagine the reactions from that one!

If anything, Miranda's Cerberus-issue *****-suit is just as bad, because with all her apparent-perfection, does she really need something that tight to shine out of it? She could dazzle in a suit of actual armour with that face and figure. So could Samara for that matter. Instead we go with crotch-hugging rubbery stuff or the queen mother of plunging necklines! And some then say that's them being in control of their sexuality, of using it against enemies as a weapon... but why not Jack? Oh, she's a nutjob, she hasn't got any self respect.

Call the organ grinder... I think the monkey needs CPR ;)

Obviously, being a fan of Miranda and posting in her thread, I know exactly what you're talking about. Lately, they just blather on about ridiculous and idiotic nonsense. It pisses me off because it has nothing to do with the character and anyone visiting the thread is going to look at it and not take anything we say seriously. For some reason some people have to make a competition out of it. I would greatly prefer to be involved in a thread with only 50 or 60 pages that actually discusses things relevant to a character rather than a thread that's hundreds of pages long and barely even mentions the character's name.

I still support Miranda and strive to keep her thread on topic, but it's frustrating sometimes.

That's why I like this thread. I've just started going through it and reading all of the pages and it seems you value quality over quantity here. I have to give you all credit for that.
