Well after a long and tiring night of uneasy dreams and not waking to find I had transformed into an enormous beetle (I was hoping for John Lennon - loveable assh*le that he was)...

Just to briefly hop back to Sundown's fic - very satisfactory conclusion. Yes sir, I liked it ^_^

Now... Jack wanting to leave... I think there's perhaps one main reason why this concept resonates with so many people, and it's one Jack has actually explained pretty clearly. She's been exploited, used, abused and deceived for almost her entire living memory. She does not trust easily (if at all). Because of that, when someone came along that actually cared about her, she didn't realise it until it was too late and he was gone. If it wasn't bad enough that every promised honesty of others turn out to be lies, it ended up blinding her to someone that was genuine and all she could do then was mourn something she'd lost she'd never even known she'd had. Everyone that loves Jack, leaves her - either through the love not being genuine or through death. She finds herself in a position where someone begins to give her affection, treats her as an equal, respects her - she's going to expect life to take it away. And who wants to go through that? Pain like that reminds Jack of the reality that in some ways she is soft already; she feels. Better to just throw it away before it leaves yet another bleeding wound in her. Convince herself that she really does feel nothing but anger and hate. Love? That's for other people. Jack probably thinks she doesn't deserve it, or no-one would want to love her anyway. If everyone that "loves" Jack goes away, she'll just do it first - it keeps her in control, makes the choice hers, and allows her to paper over the reality that she is afraid of loss with a facade of not really giving a damn either way.

So, Shepard enters her life, and gives all that she could want. So the fear sets in; she tries to push him away with tales of how uncaring she is, then with the argument that a relationship will just harm Shepard (in itself betraying her feelings somewhat)... and if he persists, and she goes to him... what then? Can she just relax, be happy there in his arms? No... she's still afraid. Afraid that now she wants someone to stay, something is going to take them away from her. Jack will be looking around every corner for whatever is coming to take Shepard away from her. I mean, consider Shepard the man; he runs around the galaxy fighting bad guys... one of these days someone might get lucky and manage to off him. And let's not forget the Reapers - oh, yeah, monsters that eat entire species. Shepard is one man. Someday, he's going to go and leave Jack. Those anxieties are going to gnaw on her until one day she just thinks f*ck it, I can't stand feeling this way anymore - I'm outta here.

But, would she walk away and stay gone? That's the question... I think it says something for us as people that we seem so intent on sending Shep after her. We don't have her go back (which I think she probably would sooner or later), but we have him go find her (or just not let her go in the first place). I think it draws your average Jackolyte as someone that knows that love is a scary business; not some fairytale thing that goes straight from A to B. We know love hurts. We understand why you'd run from it. And deep down, I think we'd want someone to be able to rescue us from ourselves. We want someone to save Jack, too. Ohboy, does it show.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. Plus, the pure emotional power of walking away to be pulled back (and to want to be pulled back so f*cking badly)... it makes for a much stronger emotional element for a writer than the happy-ever-after you'd get with Tali, or the friends-with-benefits feeling of a romance with Garrus or Miranda... only the promise of loss with Thane comes remotely close. Jack's loaded with pathos, gives us it with both barrels in all she does in-game, her romance should be the same. So, with that sentiment, I cue the music.

So where is our fic for the day?

For the fun of it... I imagine Jack coming for Shepard. Nobody can resist the Shepard charm after all... besides Samara.

I've got an idea for a short one, but I'll see about getting it down later... I'm getting a feel for Jack again in-game.

Taking a swing at another playthrough... sounds fun. I'm about to mod a lvl 30 NG+ adept and make a non-romanced ME1 Shepard to be able to romance Jaqueline in ME2 without infidelity issues in ME3.

sidenote:  started my morning excersize routine and had to stop because of allergies... ALLERGIES.  In the middle of summer?  WHY?!?!  Oh well... time to take some sudafed or something.

Maybe I'm being too sentimental and artistic, but what do you think a piece of abstract art would look like, that tries to visualize the way Jack feels tortured by her inability to reconcile her desire to leave and not be hurt, and her desire to stick around for Shepard?

And she damn near fell for Shepard, too.

Shows what Shepard's capable of, huh?

Edit: By the way, anyone know where I can get one of those Jack signatures?

Sorry about your Kafka morning.  ;)

Astute analysis, Mondo.  Very nice.

So, any advice from a successful penner of fic to a sh!tewriter? One would assume near-total indifference to one's efforts would be indicative of one's skill level, but some of us are kinda stubborn, and think we have some decent ideas.

Of course, obversely, we may just need to hear what total sh!t we actually are, so that we can stop wasting the time and do something more productive, like inadequately paint or draw or something.

Now this is how you "clear the engine room"...

The Normandy Engine Room, 12:31 Standard Operational Hours...

Shepard is in the engine room inspecting the mass effect core and main drives. After the mission through the Omega 4, masses of repairs have had to be performed; some are little more than short-term patches. Miranda is dogging his heels as he gives the repairs a look-over; she has a datapad and inventory of work still to be done and parts required. Three weeks have passed, and the Normandy is still underpowered and running well below normal speeds. Shepard has his head stuck in an access hatch, Miranda is leaning against the railing on the opposite side of the bay. Everyone else is taking a well-earned break.

Miranda: ... and the composite alloy plating there is nowhere near the strength level we need. If Joker overcharges the engines in one of his little 'trials' this whole section is going to jump from standard to around two hundred degrees celsius in a few seconds. I don't think I need to draw you a diagram of what happens in that situation.

Shep: Yeah, I think I get the picture.

Miranda: What we need is to find a dedicated stardock and overhaul the whole aft section of the drivecore, though where we're going to find one of those that will let us do repairs...

Shep: I'll call Anderson, he might be able to pull a few strings for us.

Miranda: Alright... that takes us on to item three fourty-four -

The entry lock hisses open and Jack storms into the room with a face like thunder.

Jack: (yelling) Shepard!

Shepard promptly bangs his head on the inside of the inspection hatch and curses.

Jack: Shepard, where the f*ck are you?

Miranda scowls and prepares to say something, but the look on Jack's face tells her perhaps silence is the best course of action.

Shep: (rubbing his head) Ah... Jack, what's wrong?

Jack:
I'll tell you what's f*cking wrong - this is what's wrong!

Jack throws a wadded-up handful of material in Shepard's face. He catches hold of the fabric and unfolds it, only to discover that it is a sheer black teddy. Shepard looks at the underwear, a little bemused.

Shep: Well, this is nice, but where did you ge -

Jack: (angry) Where did I get it? Oh, maybe that gift box you left me up in your cabin. Is this your idea of a f*cking joke, because I ain't laughing.

Shep: (confused) I didn't buy you this...

Jack: Oh, so who did you buy it for, huh? You buy it for the princess here?

Miranda: Jack, Shepard is hardly likely to buy anything like that for me.

Jack: Ok, you can shut up now... unless you want to start wearing your jaw as a necklace.

Miranda opens her mouth and closes it.

Jack: Smart move. So come on then, Shepard, what are you trying to say, huh? I ain't feminine enough for you? You want me to dress up like some f*ckin' asari for you, is that it? Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but THAT AIN'T F*CKIN' HAPPENING! Ok?

Jack shoves Shepard in the chest, he takes a step back towards the main control panels.

Shep: Listen, Jack, I bought you a shotgun I found on the Citadel...

Jack: Oh, get it cheap from one of those hundred stores you "exclusively" promote, huh? Waited for the sales to get me somethin'?

Shep takes another step backwards and Jack advances, fingers jabbing his ribs.

Shep: No! I got you a custom plated one...

Jack: So where is it then? Or you give that to someone else instead?

Miranda: Jack, we're trying to work here, ca -

Jack whirls around and gives Miranda a look that could freeze blood.

Jack: You get a new shotgun recently, b*tch?

Miranda: Since when have you seen me use one of those things?

Jack: Ok, so you gave it to Fishbowl then. So this stupid little rag is for her? 'Cause if I see her with a new shotgun, I swear you're gonna be wearing it up your ass, Shepard!

Shep: (conciliatory) Jack, I promise you, I've never seen it before.

Jack: Is. That. So!

With each word she jabs Shepard again until he is pinned against the main console.

Miranda: Shepard, do you want me to call security?

Jack turns to bellow at Miranda again, Shepard desperately tries to get control of the situation again.

Shep: No! Miranda, can you give us a while, let me try and sort this out?

Miranda sighs, scowls and strides off.

Miranda:
(irritated) Take all the time you like, I'm not staying to listen to this... Shepard, this is what you get for choosing to have a relationship with a lunatic, ok?

The doors close behind Miranda, leaving Shepard under Jack's angry gaze.

Shep: Listen, Jack, I -

Jack silences Shepard by suddenly mashing her mouth into his. She kisses him feverishly. When they finally come up for air, Jack is grinning like a varren.

Shep: Ok, what's going on here?

Jack: You've been down here all morning with her, I figured you were bored.

Shepard looks at the teddy in his hand again.

Shep:
So where did this come from?

Jack: Her wardrobe. She should lock her room up more often, she's got all kinds of expensive crap in there. Who knows who might steal it...

Shepard can't help but smile.

Shep: I was trying to work, you know? Getting the ship attended to is pretty important to our mission.

Jack: (mischievously) Yeah, well right now it's my mission to get attended to.

Jack laces her arms around Shepard's neck, jumps up, and locks her legs around his waist.

Shep:
(amused) I take it you liked the present?

Jack: Love it.

Shep: Wait... what happens if someone comes back?

Jack: I'll have to bust you in the chops and storm off... so, better move fast.

Shep: (chuckling) What am I going to do with you, Jack?

Jack: I got a couple of suggestions... now, less talk, more action.

Jack and Shepard kiss once more. Fade to black...

I see that the thread has been moving along nicely with all of the fanfics, and has been overall fairly active.  It seems that there is a new found enthusiam to explore the world of Jack.

It looks like we don't need a thread sponsor for the time being.  "Supershine Toothpaste" & the generic "suppository manufacturer", have been complaining that they aren't getting enough screen time.  They are about to drop us, but I'm confident that if need be, I can get them back, or find others to replace them if indeed the thread slows down again.

Edit:  I may have to give a sponsor a little screen time here, even though the thread is active.  Just so we don't lose them, and I don't want to go through the whole process of re-negotiating and such.  These contracts are a hassle sometimes folks, but I know why you guys gave me the job, and I won't let you down.

At first, I was confused.  I  knew your usage of "teddy" had to be different than mine, because I didn't know teddy-bears came in underwear form.  Then, I looked it up on urban dictionary, and it all made sense.

Another great quickfic, Mondo.

@MHRazer: I also really liked "Eyes and History", and the yankeesImage IPB, but I'm curious as to why so many people write fics about a romanced Jack trying to leave post-suicide mission. I understand what the particular writers say in regards to why Jack would try and leave, but am I the only one who think she'd want to stay with Shepard? After all she has been through, she finally met a guy who genunely cared for her for her, and not just for what she could give him. I think Jack would want to stay with Shepard, I could see her starting to love being genuinely cared for. Do a lot of people here believe that Jack would at one point try and leave? I certainly see why Jack may be tempted to leave, but ultimately I think she would want to stay with someone who wasn't just using her for her biotics, or for sex.

I don't think I'd write a story where Jack had that urge to leave, though I can imagine her having that thought lingering somewhere in her subconscious. I use her line when she dies as the second fireteam leader to drive my characterization of her post-suicide mission. When she dies, she mentions she wasn't supposed to care. That one line says volumes to me.

Her time on the Normandy, preparing against a threat far beyond anything she'd even think she'd be dealing with, that opens your eyes. Makes you think. Like if you recruit Wrex after you've already dealt with Fist, he's standing by the elevator, his only reason for wanting to join you is his feeling that a storm is brewing on the horizon, and he knows Shepard and Saren are right in the middle of it. He wants to be where the action is. Jack is the same way, she knows that storm is brewing and for once she's seen as a vital element in combating that threat.

Who knows what happens as Shepard prepares going into ME3? Surely the timeframe for ME2 is a bit longer than the gameplay suggests, stretching a few months with lots of downtime. Jack suffered the lulls well enough then. Is it all research and no play for Shepard? Doubt it. I'm sure the quest to prepare for the Reapers will keep everyone's combat skills at the ready. No reason to leave if you recognize the threat is big enough and you're always keen for a good fight, which is where I think Jack is at this point. This is even before you take friendship and romance into the equation.

Jack has tried to find a family before. Joined a cult, hung out with that colony that led her to kidnapping that space station she crashed. She wants to find a place where she belongs, a place that isn't going to then turn around and use her and screw her. Go neutral/paragon with Jack, do her loyalty mission, she'll reach a point where she probably does feel like the Normandy is that family she's looking for. Dysfunctional, odd, but ultimately looking out for each other even when they hate each other. The only issue Jack needs to overcome at this point is that constant feeling that it won't last, that someone will prove she's just a tool again. By the end of ME2, I think she's been on the Normandy long enough to start to feel like that won't happen.

Then consider romance with Jack. I never thought that would be an easy relationship for Shepard to maintain, but he's nothing if not stubborn when he wants something. Jack will test him every step of the way, wait for him to make those classic mistakes, overreact when she perceives a slight. (Okay, as always, I'm projecting a bit here.) A lifetime of learning that people work a certain way doesn't get washed away over the course of a few months. So I don't see Jack running away because she's always been running her whole life, I see her running away because she's so certain her relationship with Shepard can't last. And as I said, he's stubborn enough to sit through it all until the moment passes and she realizes the relationship is still going strong.

But yes, great fic Mondo. I really liked that little twist at the end, very clever Image IPB.

And Sundown, also very nice fic.

Too bad we don't have an active OP that could compile all these fanfics on the original post.

Seeing as the Shepard I'm going for has the Colonist background, the "What If" Jack fics probably might start with the Shepard-actually-allowing-Jack-to-leave concept.

That way, I can try to figure out the ways she could interact with Talitha.
