I voted for the "I liked jack the most and I'm under 25" option in the poll just now. And yes, I'm 16 and Jack's paragon romance is my favorite. Not all teenagers are the "all i care about is deh boobehz" ignorant type, but I do understand how I get lumped into that category for being 16. Most kids my age are close minded.

I just found a picture of Jack with Audrey Hepburn-esque pigtails. I...I don't know what to think.

This is pretty much why I wanted to run a poll like this; it's very easy for an old bird like me to think "Pah, Miranda's entire fanbase must be hormonal teenager boys!" That however is proving not to be the case thus far. I'll bump the polls again late this evening in the hope of capturing a few more votes, but I'll say this so far (based on quick observation of the polls) - no woman wants to admit to liking Jacob (not really a shocker, but I did quite like his romance personally... he certainly did more for me than Kaidan ever did). Liara, Tali and Garrus have a lot of popularity, some of which is obviously crossover value from first to second game; Tali seems most popular with younger male audience members than any segment of the female audience, Liara has a similar spread, guys liked the Garrus romance most of all the male love interests, and Kaidan seems most popular with the older female audience (who are perhaps more drawn to a sensitive male due to personal maturity). Jack has a much more broad fanbase, pretty much torpedoing my preconception of Jack appealing to women that like strong characters and older men (who are less prone to being put off by things as ephemoral as looks or percieved 'attitude problems' which an older audience will tag through experience as Jack's fears and insecurities).

I'm being quite inspired by the results to be honest, because they're not turning out exactly how I'd expected. It'll be nice to see how things alter later this evening :o

Good idea for a poll, Mondo. I'm a 20 year old guy, and I wonder who I voted for?  =]

I'm a bit surprised Miranda is doing so poorly overall.

Been working on my stupid Overlord fic and I've just realized that I hate writing lengthy fics. So I cut it short in the middle of writing chapter 2, but I'll post it anyway. Once I continue with it, I'm pretty much skipping large portions of the mission and writing the parts that interest me. Which is basically two things: how Jack drives the Hammerhead and how they got past the Geth ship cannon and into the ship itself.

I do believe that Miranda has more fans that this forum would suggest. There's a rather negative vibe for her character on the forum as a whole, so I can see any of her fans either retreating to a BSN group or another forum altogether. I do know that the Thane fans exist more in their BSN group than the forums.

That Garrus and Tali do well is no surprise to me even beyond that fanaticism stigma that the Tali fans get. The whole reason they made it into the second game was because of their popularity. Considering they included Garrus as a romanceable option, I was surprised to read how the popularity of his romance actually still came as a surprise to the developers. Like maybe they thought it would be this fringe romance group.

If the sample size ever gets large enough, I'd like to fiddle with about twenty different statistics on the thing.

But now I will go get some donuts.

Hey, Jackolytes. I've hammered together a poll to try and chart the popularity of the game's love interests based on age and gender of gamers and I'd appreciate your input. You can find the poll here. You know what to do ;)

Voted in both the polls. I'm one of the 3 less-than-25 years old females who voted for Thane :bandit:

EDIT: I'm curious to see the final results of the polls!  Are you going to publish them somewhere or will you let them run forever?

I don't see Shepard's relationship with Jack in that way.  Besides, it plays in to the hands of Jack's critics who claim that men who like her are all submissive betas/omegas.  Not that I care what they think, either way ;)

Good read, Sundown. Straight from the <3. I've tried all but the Spacer background, and Colonist - Sole Survivor is the only one for me. I wonder if that's a recurring theme here. Part of it is Talitha, Toombs, and my hate for Cerberus, but the main reason is I'd prefer Shepard to be scarred, to have emotional burdens that he overcomes in order to save his crew and the galaxy. Maybe enduring emotional scars makes him/her stronger in the end, because you survived.

And I didn't make the connection that Sole Survivor might think he "ran" from Virmire much like he "ran" from Akuze. Adds to the roleplaying, no?
Oh yeah, and Shepard referencing Pokemon, I feel so bad that I know exactly what you're talking about :?

In some people's defense, they may not even have the chance to like her for who she is, because apparently the hidey hole lives up to it's name for some :P

In seriousness, the game begs you to play it over and over, if people still don't "get" a character, it's their fault.

About Mondo's poll, I suppose it suits. Would have preferred there to be options "Under 20 - Between 20-25 - Older than 25" or more options in general, but oh well. One thing to consider is that a lot of the younger and casual gamers aren't going to be on the forums to vote, and some characters may be designed to appeal to that demographic.

I don't necessarily see her that way either.  I can see how one would have this impression of her personality though.  You get mixed signals from her.  In the thrust scene she is real dominant, but in the romance scene she appears to be the opposite.

Yup, I think the opinion that only submissive people like Jack (or the flipside opinion some have that the game hobbles Jack by making her submissive after all her dominant behaviour if a Paragon romnace path is taken) is, well, overly-simplistic horsesh*t. If you can say you're a dom 100% of the time in all things (not just the bedroom), good for you, or a sub, or whatever. I know that depending on the mood, I can be both, and I can't be some amazing exception to the rules. Not everything is black and white, and Jack certainly isn't.

Those polls are a good idea Mondo. I'm really interested to see the results after a few more days. Right now there are already some interesting observations to be made on those polls. Very few females like Tali's romance the best.

Here's the numbers of the four groups at this moment:
94 males under 25
33 males over 25
22 females under 25
15 females over 25

Edit: And good fic Sundown. A bit lengthy, but overall a good read Image IPB. It's interesting for Shepard to get so emotional since he's so unemotional in the game. Mass Effect needs more emotional Shepard.

I want Mondo to make a more extensive version of this poll and then I will promote the **** out of it. 'Cause it fascinates me really. Just the demographics of it versus who's the most popular. For instance, do the most favorite loyalty missions follow a demographic pattern? And stuff.

I think the gender ratios are interesting.

Ashley, 16 males, 3 females

Liara, 32 males, 13 females

Jack, 23 males, 13 females

Miranda, 13 males, 5 females

Tali, 48 males, 3 females

Agreed.  The romance scene makes sense.  Jack is opening up and exposing her emotions and feelings that she has deep down inside her.  This is something that she is puttting a personal stake in, not a spur of the moment act of lust, but something that involves her life in a much more personal and meaningful way.

If she was to storm into his cabin, tell him "hey, I think I can make this work between us", throws him on the bed and jumps on top of him, then the entire romance and the Jack character appear quite contradictory.  It would be totally inconstent with how the dialog played out between the two of them leading up to that moment.

Edit:  Added and subtracted a few words.

Indeedy - Jack is closest to an even split(ish), more or less confirming that she has solid cross-gender appeal. Miranda has shockingly under-performed thus far, but the rampant male adoration for Tali is about the only thing I had predicted that the poll thus far has confirmed. Everything else has been an interesting surprise.

Yeah but if you were to take this poll outside of these forums, I'm sure Miranda's numbers would be higher. There's a general feeling of dislike towards Miranda amongst these forums. That's the problem with all polls in forums. The opinions of people who regularly participate in forums are generally very different from those who don't participate at all. It's not so much a matter of being influenced by forums, but people who frequent forums are just very different kinds of people compared to those who don't.

Basically. Young, shy and virginal alien nerd with a "secret crush" throwing itself at Shepard. Who else would find this strongly appealing? Young, virginal human nerds. The majority of which are male, of course.

Tali is my Shep's buddy and trusted friend. I just wish she had the carnage ability like she did in ME1.
