I don't think that Jack would like to be overprotected - but I think given what she's been through, she'd like some sort of sense that he's watching for her, I think.
Yeah that's how I saw it too. She wouldn't be soft all the way through but she would still take consolace in knowing that she had someone out there who loved her.
Anywho, from one fan group to another (if it hadn't been for Ash, Jack would have been my girl in Mass Effect 2), hope you guys enjoy this bump. On the house!!

I really would like a Mass Effect prequel with Jack as the main character. She's such an awesome character.

I wonder what Mondo thinks Jack would do.
Oh come on! You make me sound like an expert!
Having read everything thus far on our hypothetical Murtock's Still Alive! scenario, there are a couple of things to bear in mind. We're not altogether sure how long ago this whole thing played out. Let's say it was a couple of years, tops, just to line it up with Shepard's return from death (that should never have stopped him calling people, apparently). Just to nod to that, we don't really know how long TIM's been floating the rumour that Shep is alive... could have been for months prior to Shep "waking up" - so perhaps Ash's indignation makes more sense if she's been hearing stories of him being alive for ages before she meets him again (all it would have taken was one line of dialogue, BioWare, and she wouldn't have come off as such a clingy jackass - a couple of words of clarification). Depending on that, it's kept Shep foremost in Ash's mind; made her think is he out there somewhere, with Cerberus, but would he really work for them, could this be some undercover Spectre thing, could they have him imprisoned somewhere... or could it all just be a rumour?
Thing is, something tells me that Ash and Jack would react differently to this situation of a tale that their missing man isn't so missing. Ash just gets on with her job (she's in the military, she follows rules, running off to chase rumours is not an option until a job presents itself that allows her to keep an eye out for any potential truth in the rumour). I think if Jack happened upon a similar rumour about Murtock... well, we know Jack feels a lot more deeply than she lets on. Even though he ruined everything, made her life unbearably complex with feelings, the fact he did it for her would weigh on her. Even if she had found someone new, I think she'd feel obligated to follow the story up; he did it for her, she'd not want to leave him to rot. Jack, after all, is really a person led by her heart, but she restrains it with her head. I think Jack would go to Shep and tell him, ask him to help her. Jack may well try to do it by herself, but I think a romanced-Jack is open enough to risk asking him for help... plus that opens the potential can of worms of finding her lost lover with her - you (the player) is facing the worry that Jack may want to go back to Murtock. Do you deny her, or risk it? That in itself is a big enough quandry - deny her, she may well leave altogether, go with her, you still risk losing her.
I think though that finding an emaciated Murtock in a cell somewhere is not likely. Think about it - this is Squints we're talking about here - creatures that like using flamethrowers and acid weapons because of the psychological effects they have. Murtock being alive is possible, but I doubt very much he'll just be some Monty Python ragged dude chained to a wall with a two foot beard. He'll probably be a torso with his teeth pulled out and eyes burned shut. As for the rumour of him being alive... I'd assume the batarians slipped it out in order to try and trap the other person that pissed them off all that time ago. They are grudge-bearing f*ckers, after all. And once he's found... is it more merciful to kill him? Even if you rescue him, his mind's not going to be the same. Poor bastard has probably been wishing for death all the time they had him, though what kind of damage is killing him going to do to Jack? Can she even do it? I mean, what kind of apology is a bullet for being too blinkered to see that someone loves you? And if Shepard does it for her, what kind of damage might that do to their relationship?
The whole thing is a minefield - just as much if he's been tortured to madness or fairly healthy. Y'see, I don't think Jack would leave Shep once she finds Murtock... even if he wanted her back. Plus, Murtock does not sound like the kind of guy that would try to take her back - he sold his life dear to save her, if she was happy with someone else, I doubt he'd intervene. I think the make-or-break moment would be opting to help her rescue him or not. You refuse, Jack leaves. Squad member gone. You agree, you still risk her leaving. You Paragon romance her, she stays because she really does love you. You Renegade romance her, you lose her because love is still out there somewhere waiting for her, with someone that deserves her, because at least Murtock showed her what real love was actually like in retrospect.
Though, if BioWare wrote this situation and Priiize'd it, you'd probably get a confrontation where you could have yet another risk... Renegade it, and lose her for being a jackass, Paragon it, and lose her a'la Cassablanca - hurts, but it's worth it to see her happy. And as much as it'd make me cry, I'd do that every f*cking time...
If you really love someone, you can let them go. In this hypothetical, it's down to Murtock and Shep as much as it is Jack. In the end though, it's Jack's feelings that count. Oh my God I'm talking about fiction character's feelings... call the migrant fleet

Question for you.... where do you live (time zone)? It's like six in the morning here and the only reason I'm on my computer is because I didn't go running today. You always seem to post early in the morning.

This brings up another element: how did Jack truly feel about Murtock.
I for one don't think she feels that way about him, given that I don't think she really thought about it until after he "died".
Something may have come from it, but that was in the past and given that she with Shepard now I don't think she would pursue it further.

Thus far, I think we can take a certain satisfaction that Jack went down better than any other female love interest with the female audience

She's just too squishy. Her shotgun-AI is too risky.

I used her very rearly since she is Adept and has no Warp power.
And by the time I get to do her loyalty for Warp ammo power I can just get Thane who has Warp power.
Veteran or lower is best for her.

I've taken her with me every time out on my current hardcore playthrough. Haven't tried insanity yet, and might not for a while. I just picked up ME1 and am planning on playing through that once so I can actually see the whole story, finally.NICKjnp wrote...

You've been playing default, not-your-Shepard Shepard this whole time?
