I feel like I have to question something about myself whenever someone (especially those of you who have been heavy contributers as of late) in this thread says that they didn't like the reveal trailer for Jack or that it initially set them against her. I have to question myself because when I first saw her trailer I remember thinking, "Holy sh*t, she looks awesome!" I was trying to find whatever I could about her, watching all of the videos a dozen times over just to see if I could glean anything new from them. Hell, I remember showing the reveal to my wife because she's typically a fan of strong female characters in books, etc., and I told her, "Hey honey, you need to watch this trailer for this character because I think you'd really like her."

Don't get me wrong, I can understand to an extent why some people reacted negatively. I just wish I knew why my own initial reaction was so positive. I'm glad that, in the end, I was totally right about Jack and that she is such an amazing, dynamic character... but what did I see in her initially and why did it catch my eye? Maybe I'm just shallow and just really liked the nipple halter.

I liked her the moment they revealed her, I watched every video, and I even showed her off to my wife. She likes stong females characters and this one had tats. Bonus!:P So...no, you are not alone.

Don't get me wrong, I did like the reveal trailers (levitating heavy mech = SOLD in my book ;) )... I just expected the character to tick a lot of stereotype-boxes, which to all o' us here, it turned out she didn't. While the outer-package was appealing to me (my old lady's ass has been in the loud-and-angry music camp since the 80's ), I just expected a cookie-cutter bisexual badass (I wouldn't mind, but they're nearly always written by men who have no bloody clue about other sexualities outside of patronising sitcom-level ideals and, well, pr0n). So I guess I had to be converted by playing, which makes me a lot closer to the 'I can't stand the ugly, whining, emo *****' stuck record crowd than I'd like to be...

In the end though, Jack turned out to be the coffee cream in the chocolate box - dark, bitter exterior, soft, warming interior, and not to everyone's tastes for some bizzare reason... they should try eating the damn things ;)

Weird.

Of all the threads to come in to shut down, they pick the one where folks were discussing the stuff that they themselves wrote into the game

I mean, not that it was going anywhere productive, but still. Maybe it was the talk of Jack violating people that did it. :P

Wtf. People were having some good conversations in that thread and because someone said something stupid about Jack doing the violating (whatever the hell that means), that's deserving of the whole thread being locked? But I guess it's ok for the Tali thread to have almost 2000 pages of complete offtopicness.

I just messaged Stanley Woo asking him why that thread was locked.

I honestly wish they would have an option on these forums to selectively ignore individuals whom you find to be crass or trollish. *sigh*  Let us know if Stan responds to you.

I am not not responding to anyone paticular but everyone wondering why it was closed.
I am not shocked they ended it honestly. The thread was not going to end well at all I could tell from the start. The first post was someone saying she would not have a romance with her because she was raped. Also a couple others saying they would not have a romance with someone like Jack in real life. While some were talking about a rape victim in a game which really does not make it better but some were also talking in general. Two things (first one) if you were a woman that was raped and did read that stuff on a forum I am sure just first by post alone would by hurt by what is said and second unlike the game this is not a muture rated forum.

Bioware even in a mature rated game never flat out said rape but she was only attacked. People can take how it was said in their own way like the blacked out romance scenes.

I am a male so female rape does not effect me but I can see why it is wrong to discuss it in this setting. This is a game forum and since the very first post started it off bad I can see why it did not make 2 pages.

Plus less then 2 pages and this was the trash in the thread (brackets are what I say not them)

Wouldnt the rapists (I changed it but male part)  fall off from the cold? She was cryogenicaly frozen...
Why would anyone be interested in someone who is not messed up? Those people are boring. (so being raped means a woman is messed up?)
I kill wandering transvestites, to impress my godfather.
Odds are Jack was the one doing the "violating"

Maybe it is because I am 36 years old but I can clearly see why a game developer would not want this stuff even talked about but let alone this way on their forum about a game.

I loved Jack in-game.

Meh.  I'm not really freaking out about the thread being shut down.  I just found it really odd.  All the other discussions that get held around here without so much as a whiff of moderator interference, and that thread of all things gets locked.

I've seen people talking about a lot worse than "Violator Jack," believe you me. ^_^

Obviously, I don't think Bobby (or anyone else here) wants this thread to get locked. At the same time, I think I have to agree with Mkrgross; let's leave that particular topic alone, or at least skirt around the issue tactfully in order to keep things civil and mature. Discussing Jack's past is all well and good, and we've had some good talks already about it. Let's continue to do that with the understanding that we don't necessarily know what any one person's history or opinion on such heavy topics is and that we need to be considerate of that.

I agree I would hate for this thread to get locked. I was just saying why I think it was bad but your right much better to just move on so we do not have to worry about any trouble for this thread.

Stanley Woo responded to me saying: "Because it was inapprorpiate subject matter to begin with, and true to internet form, some people just can't resist making tasteless comments or jokes about it."

And I pretty much said I agree with him and it's unfortunate that people are too immature to have an intelligent discussion about a sensitive issue.

And we have discussed Jack's comment in the Dark Star Lounge bathroom before and how it might have been rape. But this thread consists of intelligent people (not counting the trolls) so all our posts about it were mature. We said nothing worthy of a thread lock.

People who fancy themselves self-styled intellectuals happen to find themselves drawn to Schrodinger's Cat situations like Jack's little spoken/much disclosed backstory. Because she didn't definitely state what happened, our worst fears about such things both did and did not occur. For all we know, there were Turians in that bathroom and they just threw kittens at her, as they might think that was a grave insult.

So one guy with half an idea and the inability to form a sentence says something and it's a trickle-down of tossery until someone with nothing to say yet, paradoxically, a million ways to say it gets the thread locked. I can just marvel at the irony that, if the writing staff departed from their level of decorum and actually used the-word-that-must-not-be-named, that thread never would have happened.

But that's a trap you can fall in with Jack, as she says so little but discloses so much. So much so that one line she says can spark a whole page worth of discussion about what it means.

And it has.

Thank you for the image of Jack hiding around a corner, clutching a kitten and waiting for a guard to get just close enough.

'Trickle-down of tossery' - I am adopting that phrase and you can't have it back unless you pay me alimony or something :D

You've hit the nail on the head there, fella, the nail on the head.

Oddly enough, Mondo, I'm American and we don't use that word over here. I've just been watching Charlie Brooker on youtube.

But back on topic, I'd venture a guess that next to nothing happened on Purgatory as she was... You know... Frozen when we found her.

I think they put her there cause they got tired of watching her so closely. Probably caused a lot more trouble on Purgatory than we know.

That was probably just to get her ready to be transported over to Shepard's ship.  We not only have the bathroom conversation, but that one prisoner we talk to seems to be terrified of her, which I doubt he'd be if all he'd heard were stories.

Well, concerning the bathroom anecdote, I highly doubt that going to Purgatory was her first trip to prison. And this is the Terminus systems, so for all we know, Jack has had an outsized legend built up around her. We'd never know, as we've never gone into the Terminus before.

But then again, cryogenic stasis can be the future's answer to solitary confinement.

Which of course reawakens the question of how old Jack really is, Mkrgross. Something tells me that Jack isn't the kind of person who's gonna do paltry year-long stretches inside. I doubt quite highly she can afford a good enough lawyer to get her six months for defacing a moon with a space station.

On the tattoo thread on Zero Tolerance, it's shown that there are tattoos of Jack wearing different hairstyles and headgear, and someone said that Jack might be a whole lot older than she looks.

And with the turn this discussion has taken, that idea might have some credence.

Welcome to the board  we are glad to have you here. I have to say that would be a interesting fight Liara Vs Jack but I think Jack would win out.

Hehe I am stuck in the middle since I love Jack and Liara as characters. I have a save for both ready to go. For me it is a 3 way tie for Liara,Jack, and Samara so I guess I am just a sucker for a female biotic but at least Samara is not a LI.

Very true. I doubt she stayed at all the previous prisons for the length of her sentences. She most likely escaped a few times, probably why she was put on Purgatory. (A little difficult to escape there). Her age?  Well, now that humans are living a little longer she could be in her late thirties early forties and still look young. I wonder if she even knows.

Ha! I'm right there with you. My Femshep playthrough I played an adept, with Jack and Samara as my squad. Of course I played a renegade, and called it my Biotic B**** Squad.
