Quoth Jackal904: "Well I think it's safe to say Jack was not a failed attempt at making Miranda since Miranda is at least 10 years older than Jack. And if Mr. Lawson had already successfully created Miranda, I don't think he would have a problem replicating her again."

I'll concede the first point, but not the second.  If Miranda was created to be perfect and she ran away in a gunfight, then Mr. Lawson would think her imperfect (Or so I would imagine).  He would have a problem replacing Miranda because he found out belatedly that Miranda didn't meet his standards, so he would try to make improvements.  She put him back at square one.  Also remember that while Miranda is thirty-five, Oriana is only nineteen.  I find it harder to imagine that Mr. Lawson sat on his hands for sixteen years than that he didn't.

Quoth Jackal904: "Maybe she hasn't found it yet, or maybe Cerberus just never kept information about her existence before the Teltin facility. Where she's from isn't really important to Cerberus, they only care about her biotics. Or maybe they don't want anyone to find out where she is from, so they left that info out of the databases."

While I will concede that she may not have found it yet, it is eerie that there's nothing in there on her at all.  If she was tank bred, stolen or donated, there would be info in there somewhere.  To do otherwise is just bad science.  If you're performing tests on someone you need to know everything, from inherited traits to possible congenital defects that could affect the integrity of the experiments.  I have a feeling in my gut that it's gonna come out in the wash and be relevant somewhere.

Quoth Jackal904: "I'm glad to see that Jack has the third highest fan thread out of all the new squad members. That's not bad at all."

Even better is that we're only six or seven pages out of second.

I do have to admit that personally for me she would look A LOT better with some hair. She has a really pretty face, just needs hair.

I like her with a shaved head, though I might be one of a few.

I agree...the shaved head just adds to her sexiness, at least to me!

She reminds me of Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta with the shaved head, which isn't a bad thing.

I'm in this group too... even if she had some of the more way-out hairstyles in her design sheets she would be a lot less striking than she already is. Shaved heads are still uncommon enough to get doubletakes on women even now, moreso than a mohawk (unless it's a 2-foot masterpiece at least) or any other alt-hairstyle. Plus it makes her even more of a polar opposite to the other human LI that is Miranda. Mira wears her femininity on her sleeve, while even with no more than the nipple-halter on, Jack's femininity has to be discovered by the player. It's what's inside that counts more than anything, and if the outside happens to do it for you too, it's all gravy. She was always going to be the game's alt-girl pinup, even when put up against aliens ;)

I too agree that the shaved head definitely works very well on Jack.

Incidentally, I just got around to playing the Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion a couple months ago, and found the also-bald Safiya to be quite attractive. Needless to say, however, her reign as "Most Attractive Female With a Shaved Head in a Video Game" didn't last too long once I got around to Mass Effect 2...

I always thought Jack had quite the feminine face, accentuated by what I perceive to be a rather classical make-up style.
And then when you take a step back and look at her as whole, there is a certain "crash" between this and her other rather unconventional features: The shaved head, the tattoos and her rather lean figure.
I think thats just awesome. I wouldn't really change anything about these parts, as the sum of them is really great.

I find it a little bizarre how fixated some people were/are upon that one aspect of the character (the haircut). Particularly in regard to reasons for not liking it, which if you happened to read those in-depth favorite/least favorite character polls was one of the foremost given (alongside use of "foul language").

Is seeing a bald woman really that jarring that some would dismiss a character entirely on the outset? Apparently. Which in turn leads me to believe a lot of the character's detractors are on the immature side.

As for myself, I liked it initially, and then sort of forgot about it altogether in lieu of the rest of characterization.

That's a great way of putting it. Jack has a very feminine face and figure. I absolutely hate it when people say she's butch, because she is so not. The fact that she has a shaved head means nothing. She's the most petite squadmate, and she has a very pretty face. And then she gets very emotional when you break past her barriers. Plus she cries the most out of all the squadmates. She's not even remotely butch. She's just tough and doesn't fall for Shepard like a rock like every other LI. I think people say she is butch because, unlike every other LI, she doesn't act like she's totally into you right off the bat, and they get offended by that. Like, "How dare you not want to marry me at first sight! I hate you now!"

I'm sure the developers wanter her feminine face to "crash" with her aggressive look. If she was ugly, I bet most of you guys would never consider romancing her :-P

Plus the name for Jack fans sounds so
much better than "Talimancers." Where did they get that name from
anyway? Are they bringing Tali back from the dead or something?
Whenever I see the word "Talimancers" I think of necromancers and then
I think of necrophyliacs because of that creepy ass paper mache of
Tali. I know it's not an organic being, but I wouldn't be surprised if
the creator of that does some freaky **** with it...

I've never noticed how much it sounds like "necromancers" XD that's because the word "thanemance" had spoiled my ears.

Sadly, I think you might be correct, at least to a point. Then again, who's to say that if they had given her a face that most of us find to be "ugly" that there wouldn't have been a batch of people that ended up finding her attractive that currently don't? I'll admit that, for myself, I appreciate the fact that she has such a feminine face, arguably the best looking one of any female character in both games. I do have to say, though, that I found it somewhat humorous that Jack seems to have spent more time on her make-up than even Miranda does as shown by the fact that Miranda cries and it just rolls down her face, but Jack cries and there's a river of black from all the mascara.

I've also found it interesting when some people refer to her as looking "boyish" when referring to her body. I guess the best word that I ever found to describe Jack's body would be "lithe". Sure, she's not rocking an oversized rack like Miranda, and she doesn't quite have the ghetto-hips that Tali does, but she still has a purely athletic, female figure... and it's hawt (yeah, I said it).

And one more thing... and let me apologize ahead of time since this borders on "Tali thread-ish-ness", but incidentally while I was looking for a good descriptor and an example pic for Jack's body I ended up coming across pictures of an actress that I think captures her likeness decently well: Meredith Monroe.

I think it's an interesting dichotomy.  As so many others who probably AREN'T regulars on this thread have said, "You know, if Jack got rid of those tattoos, grew some hair, and wore something a little more normal, she'd be pretty hot."  I think a lot of how Jack chooses to look is an attempt to completely sublimate her femininity, which she sees as a sign of her being "weak."

She's reached this point where, deep down, she blames herself for everything that has happened to her in the past, because she wasn't strong enough.  So any sign that she's "girly" or something like that gets suppressed.  Hell, even her name is a guy's name.  Yeah, she had it back in the facility, but it would have been easy enough to pick a new name once she had escaped.  The fact that she still goes by Jack is both an indicator that she wants to be "masculine" and, in her view, "strong," and also that she hasn't left the facility behind her, and that no matter how far she runs from it, it's still a part of her.

Or, as they might say in the Tali thread, "Yeah, Jack's awesome!"

Here's a fun "fact" I just discovered. So I noticed a couple of threads about people being upset/curious about Miranda's uncanny ability to survive practically any scenario in the suicide mission. Some people say it's because that's how Bioware programmed it.

I think it's because Jack is a f**king bada**!!

Haha. Miranda better thank Jack for saving her (nice) ass.

I don't know maybe. If she really wanted to destroy her femininity she would probably get some tattoos on her face and she probably wouldn't wear any makeup. And I doubt she would show her.. twins, so openly. I think she's just trying to look tough and intimidating. I don't think she wants to hide or eliminate her femininity.

I kind of hope she keeps the shaved head. I guess there's always the potential that they'd have her hair grow out a bit between ME2 and ME3, but she just wouldn't seem the same.

Think of it this way: we've established that most of Jack's appearance has to do with her desire to intimidate and push people away from her, and this includes her shaved head. Now, if you romanced Jack or at least have her loyalty at the end then perhaps she decides to ease up on that defensive shell a little bit and grow her hair. On the other hand, if you romanced her then she understands that Shepard was strong enough to see through her defense and still appreciate what he saw, so there's no point to change it because Shepard doesn't care and the shaved head still acts as part of her intimidating persona towards her enemies.

She better keep the same hairdo from ME2. Her hair is part of what makes her unique.

Jack had potential, but they railroaded her into the cliche "tough girl/damaged goods" role rather than bothering to give her any depth.
